I think the speaker system is good enough for my needs and I'm thinking of just replacing the BEck CDR23 with something that supports an iPod interface.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was using the key for the first time to close the top/convertible. Everything seemed fine until it got confused on the last few steps. 1. All windows goes down 2. Top going up 3. Trying to lock - it locked 2'' over the winshield 4. Windows are still down and nothing happens... After this it will not move - I can't close or open. I tried using both the key and the manual switch - I can here a ticking sound like it is trying to do something. I can't drive the car like this and will have to call the dealer tomorrow morning... Since the car is in the garage I will not try and close/open doing the manual emergency steps explained in the manual. Any advice? Is it possible to reset the system somehow?

POST 2Original post

Do you have a pic to explain this? I am confused as to what has happened. Does the top operate fully (both up and down) using the button inside the car? Depending on what has happened there are a couple troubleshooting directions you can go. Also, is the car under warranty?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a picture that I'm trying to upload that better explains the situation. Sorry, I'm new to this forum. I've added it as an attachement... The top does not operate using the button inside the car. It's under warrenty - a "new" 2004 that only has 1000 miles on it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's one more picture... Thanks for help!

POST 5Original post

Sounds like something is getting hung up inside the top motor. I would definitely take it to the dealer since it is under warranty. Never seen a top stick like that....usually it gets stuck at the other end (trying to open fully) and the "flaps" get stuck.

POST 6Original post

Also, it is odd that the windows are fully up since that do't go anywhere till the top is fully closed. WHen you try to open/close the top does the light on the instrument cluster blink?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The windows are going up and down when I try to open or close the top. And yes, the light on the instrument cluster does blink.

POST 8Original post

The blinking of that light will signify trouble in the operation and the usual culprits are the microswitch under the rear center console behind the ebrake and/or the flaps getting jammed up. I haven't seen a top stop two inches before the end like yours. This one is strange. My suggestion would be take it to the dealer and then post back here what you found out so we know in the future. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I was hoping it was a simple fix but this is one I haven't seen here on the board. My other suggestion would be to post over at Renntech.org which is a more technical site that might be able to shed some light on this.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I found a thread at RennTech.org with a similar issue. Unfortunatly the fix was to do the manual emergency procedure - link . I'll post back what I find out and try Renntech.org as well.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Problem found and fixed. I feel embarrassed to say this but it turned out to be the fuse. The visual inspection I did was on the wrong one and picked the right one going through the steps suggested in the other thread... But what the heck - I'm really happy its working again. Thanks for help! Here's a nicer picture of my "new" -04 996.

POST 11Original post

Clundin - I'm glad you got it fixed. Very nice Cab and welcone to the zoo! Do you have any MODs planned? If so, you should start with the clear side lights, Short Shifter, and then build from there.

POST 12Original post

Way to go ....better to feel embarrased than lose you car for a day or two at the dealer. Nothing to worry about...we ALL have done that at least once (some more than that). you are in good company.

POST 13Original post

Keep in mind too that when the cab top is new, and yours is, you may have to pull it down while it's in the very last position to kind of help it out. You only have to do this a few times then the top loosens up. Rob

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys! I do have a few mods in mind - let me know what you think. I'm trying to rate them by $ (cost of doing), level of effort(easy to do - DIY or not) and when in time: My first and only mod so far is the alum trim rings from bumperplugs - looks awesome. Next 1. One of my european friends made the comment it had SUV height - need to fix that and lower it a few inches. I read somwhere that a cheap easy solution is the change the springs to M030 2x $89 (front+ back) + labor? I have a feeling there is more to it than that. 2. Clear side lamps for sure! 3. I want to connect my iPod - not over FM. Seems to be a problem with MOST. I think the speaker system is good enough for my needs and I'm thinking of just replacing the BEck CDR23 with something that supports an iPod interface. 4. I'm thinking about getting a chrom logo at the back instead of the black (if it is an easy thing to do) 5. Chrom wheels someday 6. Garagedoor opener AND apperantly a shorter shift - thanks for adding that one gota911... Is it easy to do? this is my list for now - I'm sure it will grow.

POST 15Original post

I have done both the Chrome Carrera logo and the short shifter. Short shifter is pretty easy, takes 1 1/2 to 2 hours to complete/ B&M instructions were very good. FYI

POST 16Original post

1.RoWM030 Kit is shocks, springs, and sways (about $1K plus install...I did it and love it....dropped about 11mm in rear and 17mm in front) 2.Clear Sides ($30, 1minute to install) 3.I have an itrip and love it. Some do, some don't (but easy fix for $35) 4.Not sure about the chrome logo. Get silver as most do here. 5.Chrome wheels have no business on a 911. Just my opinion though. 6.See Kirby's install. (inexpensive and very cool looking). 7.SSK ($250 plus 1-2hrs install).

I think you just experienced first hand the Law of Parsimony--the simplest of one or more theories usually is correct. I once spent hours plungering the bath tub to free a slow drain. Dumped a 100 gallons of Liquid Plumber, snaked it, and on and on. Finally, I admitted defeat and called the Plumber. He came out for $75.00 and flipped the little up and down handle thingy and the drain opened --- the Law of Parsimony!
