I too have the Nav and cannot use the Porsche cupholder.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A friend of mine wants to get her dad a cup holder for his 2001 996 for father's day. I guess he has a nav system that took the place of his. What are the options here? I only know about 993s.
3 choices that I know of are as follows:
1. Dual cup holder (OEM) that takes the place of the climate control....not feasable if Dad has a NAV system.
2. Single cup holder (OEM) that "squeezes" between the upper/center A/C vent and NAV/Climate Control, as in the 2004 models (don't know/think it will work for 2001's)
3. Aftermarket "clip-on" units that are junk.
Check eBay for alot of choices......

Re: rval_1999
1. Won't work as you stated
2. Cup holder in the 02+ will NOT fit
3. Aftermarket is junk..
There are still 2 choices in my opinion.
1. Check to see if the air vent to the left of the ignition have 3 holes in it. They would be (1) in the middle of the bottom and (2) two of them on the sides about halfway up. If you have these three holes then you can do the Porsche cupholder that clips in. It is VERY limited what it can hold height and width wise since it is as round as a coke can and the window pillar gets in the way for TALL drinks. (about $20-25)
2. There is a cupholder (only aftermarket one I like) that I saw in the new PP catalog that will accomodate several sizes and it attached to the side of the center console to the right of the gear shift where your passengers calf muscle would rest. ($59.95)
The one in that link looks like aftermarket crap. Sorry to say that but it doesn't integrate at all and looks extrememly bad. Just my opinion though.
Here is the Porsche Cup holder and the PP one.
Well, to my untrained eye, the vent clip one looks pretty cheesy. The one I have is very high quality, any feedback from 996 owners that have the cupholder.com one? And where can you get the PP holder?
I agree as well. That Porsche one appears an afterthought it looks like by PAG. The other one is probably the one I am going with.
Sorry...PP=Performance Products.
I too have the Nav and cannot use the Porsche cupholder. The others look cheesy too. There is one that looks nice IMO. Out of the way and easy to access.
You can get it from

I have not got one yet, but a lot of people here like them.
I think I like the 997's above best! Nice Tool Pants!

Check out ultimatecupholders.com. I have one in my 2000 996. It looks (IMHO) fairly good, albeit definitely aftermarket, and it works VERY well. I also use two in a 1998 BMW 528i, as the original BMW cupholders are complete crap. I even like the ultimatecupholder one better than the built-in ones in my 2003 Honda minivan, in terms of functionality.
[edit]: Great minds think alike. I keep mine on the passenger's side, and its still easily reachable from the driver's seat, while completely out of the way for the driver (me :-)

I saw one in a catalog that fits inside the center console that said it was for boxters. Would this fit our 996's? It is a simple molded plastic insert that makes the center console compartment useless, but I have nothing in it anyway. Anyone seen it?
MonkeyBoy,
Wasn't sure how to include a hyperlink to the thread, so I bumped a previous post I included on the cup holders I did for my 99 cab. Somehow it kind of turned into an anti-radio discussion, but it has pretty detailed instructions for the cupholders. I really like them. It does help to have a black interior as it helps the cup holders blend in, but you may be able to order them in other colors. Hope it helps you.
