Also everyone there used the horn instead of turn signals so forget listening to the radio as everyone merges in and out of the different lanes at will.

I took it out one night and used the valet parking on Champs Elyssees (in front of Fouquet's) and just left it at the hotel garage the rest of the time -- the Paris Metro and cabs are much more convenient.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Look what I saw walking down the champs elysees. Is this guy a rennlister? I was shocked to see that he would park that close to the car in front of him... Notice the boot on the car in front of him so highly unlikely that the booted car tried to squeeze in between the p-car.. Note, up close his car had so many nicks, chips, and scratches.. To each his own I guess..

POST 2Original post

Well, it's pretty clear the blue car can't back up. Parking is so tight in Europe that parking knicks are a risk you'd have to take, if the car is a principle means of transportation. Expectations and lifestyles are very different. There, Mercedes are taxi cabs, here they are luxury cars. Ever see a full size Suburban on the streets of Millan? It looks like a semi. Can't be parked legally on any street. Driving styles are much different too. People tend to fill every inch of road space. You can drive on a highway where the shoulder has been excavated, so moving 1 inch out of your lane will result in a rollover. Everyone is still zipping along at 120. Here, that entire lane would be closed. A typial taxi ride can be at 6/10 of racing speed. So more stuff happens and cars get used up. Obviously harder there to buy a car sight unseen. AS

POST 3Original post

I once spent a week on Korea. After 3 days, I stopped looking for a car that did not have a dent in it.

POST 5Original post

If you want to see insane traffic, visit any major city in India. I spent some time over there in 2003 and it was crazy. What would be a four lane road in the US is six lanes each direction with every lane being a turn lane for both left and right. If you don't see an accident every 1000 feet then something is wrong. Also everyone there used the horn instead of turn signals so forget listening to the radio as everyone merges in and out of the different lanes at will. Thank goodness all I have to put up with is rush hour traffic here in Austin. After India, rush hour seems nice and tame.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

IMO Paris streets are actually a decent size.. Bigger then Rome.. The pic doesnt show but the p-car was parked in the crosswalk.. Did the driver really need to get under the car in front of him just to gain a few inches?

POST 8Original post

My strangest driving experience was Switzerland. In Zurich, I stopped in front of a store on a downtown street so my then-girlfriend could run in and pick something up. I didn't realize I was blocking a lane of traffic. Nobody beeped. I just felt my car getting propelled from behind. A guy in a Saab actually pushed me forward til I got the idea. They are so polite, they won't honk. But so adamant, they will bulldoze you across an intersection. AS

Posting a clear picture of someone on the internet without a consent is not nice.

POST 10Original post

I lived in Rome for 6 months and drove up to Paris a couple of times. I had picked up a brand new MB SLK320 (Euro Delivery Program) to drive while I lived in Rome and I didn't want to risk getting it nicked parking. I took it out one night and used the valet parking on Champs Elyssees (in front of Fouquet's) and just left it at the hotel garage the rest of the time -- the Paris Metro and cabs are much more convenient. I did however retrace the route driven in the film "C'Etait Un Rendezvous" but it wasn't the same as in the movie -- you can't go that fast around L'Arc de Triomphe without crashing into another car and you can only go 25 mph tops on the Champs Elyssees with the traffic. It took the driver in the movie around 8 minutes to drive from L'Arc de Triomphe to the Sacre Coeure at top speed in a Ferrari (?) in 1970's traffic and it took me about 40 minutes stuck in modern day traffic. If you haven't seen the film, check out this video clip . This film should be part of every driving enthusiast's collection! One thing I like about parking in Europe though is that the height of the sidewalk curb is much lower than in the US. This makes it easier to parallel park -- you actually drive front first at an angle and hop on the curb then turn the wheel and drop into the spot.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You're right.. wasn't thinking..

POST 12Original post

Hey, at least the owner did the clear side marker mod! :-)

POST 13Original post

I think in Europe the mod would be amber side markers....

POST 14Original post

Ah, you're right Lee, silly me! So, what are you doing wandering Santana Row? Isn't that a bit off track for Portland? :-) Cheers.

POST 15Original post

Little business travel. Ate at Blowfish... very nice. Kumamotos, miso, spider roll and beer. Yum!

POST 16Original post

Hey try Maggiano's and/or the Left Bank if you get the time. Also, maybe you can drive home with a Lexus or H2 that seem to take all the good parking on SR? Enjoy.

POST 17Original post

here is a shot from my last trip to india - May 18th 2005 (i'm over there 5 time or so a year). this shot was taken in the early afternoon - before rushhour!!! no fenderbenders this time - which is rare.

POST 18Original post

oh and remember the driver is on the right in India

POST 19Original post

Well in Paris, the Champs Elysees is the only bloulevard (if memory serves)where they don't also park cars on the sidewalk. Every where else you go, cars are parked on the sidewalks.....You gotta be nuts to drive an expensive car in Paris.......Same experience as NY.....I always took a taxi......which was also an experience similar to being in NY...... Paris, great city, too bad about the french.....and my surname shows up in the Paris phone book as often as "Smith" shows up in London's......
