Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello everyone. My first post as I'm looking to purchase a 1999 C2 Cabrio and wanted to get your opinions if I'm getting a fair deal. - It has a clean carfax - less than 70k miles - aftermarket 18" rims with nearly new tires - full brake job (rotors and pads) done within 7k miles - new top less than 2 years ago. - clutch job within 7k miles - clean paint and interior - owner has all service records. Checked cars.com and autotrader.com for comparable vehicles and got mixed prices. Assuming everything is legit, is $23k-$24k a reasonable price? Thanks and I hope to be an owner soon and contribute.

POST 3Original post

Sounds kind of high for a 1999 model. I have seen coupes going for ~15k in Boston area. That seems like maybe even 2002 cabrio money

POST 4Original post

Prices have been steadily going up in the past year so the numbers mentioned by the OP seem quite reasonable especially for the description given by him. 15k! Please!!! Pete

POST 5Original post

there is a 1999 coupe with 150k miles for 13k on CL in boston area right now (but needs a clutch)

POST 6Original post

If, if, if...the overall condition of the car is excellent with no evidence of major paint work, good maintenance records have been kept, and it had the IMS bearing replaced when the clutch was done, I would say the price is within the ball park. relinuca

Depends on the local market, too. Even still, I'd agree that $24 sounds a bit high for 70k miles. My estimate is $21-22k, depending on condition and geography.

POST 8Original post

I paid 23.5K for mine with 35K miles. Depends on the market but I agree for 70K miles price seems high. Allow 1,200 for an IMS upgrade, which is well worth the mental health. 13K for a car with 150K miles, needs a clutch....and I bet alot of other things! I would avoid!

POST 9Original post

It does look like the price of older 996's are increasing.

POST 10Original post

Sounds good to me. I sold my near mint late '99 C2 Cab with 61 k miles in June '10 for $30k. It was in extraordinary condition with 29 factory options and an original msrp of over $95k. I just serviced it and fit new tires right before the sale, as well at doing an incredable detail job. I saw the owner last week and he told me how much he like the car and felt like he got a great buy on it.

POST 11Original post

I would shoot for $20-$21K, keep in mind IMS is something that you should take into account unless it was done witht the clutch. However, prices will be higher in peak season, and maybe $1000 more spent will give you the joy u have been searching for. From the information you provided, it may jst be worth it with the service records all present. Good luck.

POST 12Original post

I just purchased a 1999 C2 cab with 31,500 miles. It has a factory hardtop, pretty well optioned, and is in great condition. I paid 23,990. I have been researching cars/prices for the past 6 months and have noticed the prices creeping up at a pretty quick clip. I have also found that most cars that people consider to be "priced right" have been in crappy shape, have high miles, or other problems. Living on the east coast, the cars priced a bit cheaper on the west coast would have a $1500 shipping premium tacked on the price. The shipping basically cancels out most of the cost savings. Honestly, I would shoot for 21,000 for the car mentioned in the beginning post, but 23,000 wouldn't be out of the question.

POST 13Original post

It's a tad high but not unreasonable at all. Considering all the work that has been done and owner having service records I wouldn't feel bad at that price. I would probably offer $21k and stand firm but that's just me. I bet he meets you at $22,500 and you get it done! However, a lot of other people will tell you to just buy it and not worry about the extra grand or two. Good luck!

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have to ask about the IMS bearing and RMS but since he didn't mention it, I wouldn't expect it to have been done. He did emphasize that there were no leaks. What's really attractive about this car is that the tires are near new and clutch/brakes have all been taken care of recently. Some peace of mind in not having to deal with these normal wear-n-tear items in the near future. I think I can talk him down to $22.5k, but don't expect much less (but I'll definitely try). Thanks everyone!

POST 15Original post

it will be worth it and you will love the car! At the end of the day 1000.00 either way up or down will be completely forgotten 12 months from now. Pete

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car is in good shape and he had all the records. To my surprise, it had an aftermarket Nav (still has the stock stereo). He also did the 60k maintenance. The RMS seal was replaced with the clutch job but no mention of the IMS bearing. One other thing, there was a typo on when the clutch was done...not 7k miles but 17k miles ago. I got him down to 22k. Maybe not the best deal around but there's not many in the low 20k's without a ton of miles or maintenance work to do..this is my way of rationalizing Do you think going from 7k to 17k miles on the clutch is substantial? How much would you deduct for that? I guess I can offset some of that against the Nav that I didn't know about. The only other things to make is perfect is an aero kit and something to make it go faster...any reasonably prices aero kits (more classy/subtle rather than flare) and turbos out there? Thanks to all that responded.
