I understand that, but mine are installed from the top with the bolt on the bottom, no way to remove the bolt...heat shields are in the way.

When I remove the bumper, I will make sure I have them installed the other way.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I know what needs to be done but still not sure why Porsche decided to do what they did with that bolt on each side of the mufflers.
Curious, was going to drop the mufflers and saw the bolts that hold them on require the rear bumper to come off so you can pull them out from the top. Why did they not install them the other way? Just venting..
In the process of being able to swap the OEM mufflers to exhaust bypass pipes for track days. I know what needs to be done but still not sure why Porsche decided to do what they did with that bolt on each side of the mufflers.
The bolts should go in from the bottom. The nuts go on the top.
That way the bolts come DOWN, you can fit a stub wrench on the top nut, and you don't have to remove the bumper.

I loved that one too, the first time I removed the muffler from a 996. The factory installs the exhaust with the engine out of the car. At least we don't have to pull the engine to get it off.
Leave them and take off the three nuts (see the studs in the pic) that hold that bracket to the carrier.
Loosen the two bolts on the muffler to cat pipe first, slide the clamp toward the cat take the three nuts off and drop the muffler down and out toward the wheel. I take the rear tires off to make it easier. Makes it a 20 minute job.
Do as fpb111 says and when they are out, reverse the two bolts so that the nut is on the top. This will make it easier to do in the future. It's not necessary to remove the wheels if you have the rear wheels on ramps.
The trickiest part is finding the best access point for the socket wrench. If I remember correctly, the bottom nut was the toughest.
I was thinking about doing that but thought it might be the wrong way. Damn....I could have used that earlier. Thanks much for the info though, figured there was another way.
Getting the fuel filter, oil changed, and spark plugs all at the same time so when getting that done, the bypass pipes should be easy. I am just going to have the bolts reversed.
yea, man... how could they have made it any easier...
one clamp and 3 nuts..10 minutes TOPS! (after you did it the wrong way a couple times..) Takes longer to jack up the car then remove the muffler
yes try that, thats what i did but my bolts were all rusted,
so a 20mins job was more 2hrs lol
then, I decided to put back the mufflers cause it was too loud
+1 on removing the three nuts that hold the muffler bracket to the car.
The likely reason the bolts connecting the muffer to the bracket were installed "nut down" by Porsche is so that, if the nuts were to come undone, the bolts would not fall out (by gravity) which would cause the muffler to hang only by its connection to the catalytic converter...for a while, until the muffler fell off.
