Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey everyone, I hope Thanksgiving was good to all of you! I've been quiet for a while and haven't been following the forum with work and issues keeping me busy. I'm back because I need help - I found a long surface scratch on the left front fender a few inches above the wheel well of my targa. The scratch appears white against my metallic black paint, and feels as if its in the clearcoat, possibly deeper but I can't be sure. There's also some light scratching against the surface of the fender immediately above the wheel well. I know I should take pictures but the car is in the underground garage in my building where it sits all week while I metro to work. Any suggestions on a product to try to buff out the scratch this weekend? I normally use Zaino All-in-one a few times a year and zaino car wash - but both are long overdue so maybe this weekend will see a wash if the weather gets above 50! Thanks for any suggestions! Lawrence

Sorry to hear about the flesh wound. If you can catch the scratch with a fingernail, it's generally too deep to completely buff out. I use Meguiar's professional line and I don't have the product numbers handy, but you would want to start with their Speed Glaze product and an Orbital buffer (not circular) and then work your way up to a Polish product and then your wax. It's going to take some patience, but using an orbital (as you may already know) will minimize swirl marks as it mimics your hand motion and you won't burn through the clear coat like you can with a circular.

+1 on what X51 said. If that does not work, call your nearest Porsche dealer to see who they use for paint chip repairs and minor paint touch up work. Many towns have a paint touch up guy that goes to the dealerships (all makes, not just Porsche) and do this type of work for them. Those guys are really good and are not very expensive.

start with course rubbing compound and do circular motions all around the scratch and see if you have any effect rubbing it down. If so keep it up for a while. If it makes it appear as a deep cut line and it appears to be cut down into the black paint, you may as well stop and go to a paint shop and have the try to touch it up. If you compound it and it almost dissappears go to a really fine compound and polish it out. Make all rubbing a random pattern and go bigger in the area around it untill you cant see any deffinate patterns caused by the rubbing. if you are having a good effect rubbing it out you can go to a orbital polisher and do it by maching , but dont get carried away and go thru the clear.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Naturally, its been in the mid 30's the last few days in DC so the wash and buffing is on hold. I'll take some before and after pics once I get after this and see how it works out. More Christmas shopping to do today, but I think I'll walk the 20 minutes to my stores rather than fight the driving/parking madness. The targa got her weekly 20 min drive and battery charge yesterday Enjoy your weekends everyone. Lawrence
