So I changed the oil on my 2003 996 and the oil changing station service guy tells me that the alum oil plug is stripped and that they won't be able to apply the recommended torque.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Heya guys, thanks in advance if you can help. So I changed the oil on my 2003 996 and the oil changing station service guy tells me that the alum oil plug is stripped and that they won't be able to apply the recommended torque. Sure as s... I get a slow leak. Question I have is do you know how I can get this replacement part without having a Dealer/Mechanic tell me that they need to inspect because it could be something else $$$ Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Order it from suncoast, put some newspaper under it in the meantime. Check the oil frequently till you can change the plug.

POST 3Original post

Just order the part from Suncoast or pick it up from your local dealer. Be sure to use the crush washer. Buy yourself a new oil catch can and you should be able to reuse the oil if it's new.

POST 4Original post

that oil looks dirty, what are you running... stripped plug, or stipped pan (big differance) - if your pan is stripped and you get a new plug, remove the oil and then find out, you might not be able to get the plug to stay in as good as it is right now.... so- "oil changing station service guy" WTF is that? Jiffy Lube?? PLease tell me you are not taking it to one of those places

POST 5Original post

"PLease tell me you are not taking it to one of those places" I could'nt agree more!! I trust nobody when it comes to any of my cars, including dealerships.....or I shoud say I trust VERY few, and even then, if I can, I check their work!!

POST 6Original post

I cant imagine letting a minimum wage, minimum experience "tech" touching my p-car even to add air to the tire, let alone use any sort of a tool and do work of ANY type

POST 7Original post

even the experienced guys can be sketchy.... main reason why I try to DIY.

POST 9Original post

Hopefully it is the plug and not the pan. If it was me I would go to LN Engineering and order a magnetic drain plug rather than the OEM plug. If it is the pan it is more work but still an easy DIY.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 8109048

When did they (you) change the oil? For sure put a piece of cardboard under your Porsche, that will tell you how much you are losing. GL

POST 13Original post

Now I am a little confused. Is it the hex drive that is stripped or the threads into the pan?

POST 14Original post

OH, maybe thats it... the internal hex for tightening, in that case CAKE fix!!

POST 15Original post

The pic looks like the hex drive. I'm with Doug http://www.lnengineering.com/drainplug.html

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is the Hex that is stripped, already ordered the part. THX!
