I use K+N on my SC 996 and has no effect on MAF or anything else.

And oh, if you want a "clean" K&N after this wicking process you need a cleanroom to provide clean airflow so you don't foul the filter during the wicking process.

But like the OEM, you want a clean filter and they get dirty over time.

the trick is to not put the filter in right after you clean it - i had 2 for the 964 - clean on and shelf it for a while and let any risidual drip out - also you don't have to go crazy with the oil.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They showed some improvement in air flow iwith the K&N, which at least in BMWs resulted in a slight performance improvement in older BMWs, but no improvement at all in recent vintage models.

We want to do a group buy on these K&N DROP IN replacement filters for the 996 C2 or C4. These filters will help your engine breathe better and they last forever with the use of K&N filter charger kit every 10000 miles or so.
This is a great mod for some small HP gain as well as preventative maintenance. The filters can be switched in about 20 minutes. If you have not changed your stock filter...then it is probably time you do!
This Group Buy has no set people. 1 person or 20. We will ship and/or order as the orders come in.
Filters are $59
TURBO Flat Panel Filters added for 01-04 - $67.99
We also have the K&N Recharger Kits to clean and maintain your filter for $9.99
You can order online here too -

I have noticed a nice difference! The K&N Filter is alot cheaper in the long run because the stock filters get dirty and need replacing. Also, I am all for my engine being able to breath better. Personally, I am not a big fan of the stock filters. The dealers will always tell you they are just as good so you keep buying them.
K&N really is not maintenance. Most people NEVER clean them. But like the OEM, you want a clean filter and they get dirty over time. Why not spend $9 and clean it 5 or 6 times over $50K or you can spend $XX on a OEM one. I think K&N makes a difference!
Is there actual documented proof as to performance gains? How about the risks from over oiling the K&N filter? What about the BMC filter? Any better or worse?
I've had K&N filters on many of my cars and always loved them, but they (& BMC) are not a good idea on 996's. The oil gets on the MAF and you're out a few hundred $$$ to replace it. Also, the HP gains are minimal (if there are any at all). Better to stick with the paper filter.
Yeah, that's what I heard too. Just means you need to be VERY careful when cleaning and oiling it. I didn't notice any more power either. I think I got more performance out of a bottle of STP gas treatment.
Oil on the MAF, causes possible MAF failure? That's an oldie but goody. Actually, there is likely some truth to it if you put the filter in, dripping with oil.
Just don't spray too much oil on the filter, let it sit for a minute or two/ tap a few times to get any excess out and your golden.
I have had K&N filters in all my cars and I have never had a problem. The only MAF I ever had fail on me was with stock air filter.
on the over oiling thing -

a dab will do ya
Good product - never had an issue with them or BMC - seems like a good price
I also have had a K&N filter on all my cars and have one for 3 yrs now on my current 996 and I would highly recommend it. I believe that the only way you can get oil into the MAF would be if you use the entire bottle, especially the way it is positioned. I would of loved to go with this group buy if I did not have one already.
Holger, I am painfully aware. The failure was actually in the pcar. I drove down to SC and it was failing on the the way down. Got the CEL just as I pulled into Charleston. The service rep didn't think I had a warranty so he tried to charge me the $550 to replace. I almost fell over. Changing an MAF is about as difficult as changing the oil, but I was under warranty, so why bother.
In the end, I stand behind the K&N product. Like Rob said, just dont't over oil.
There you go...

You can order either directly online! FYI, we are currently ordering and stocking these now. We will give you ETA and communication updates as soon as you order. We have a VERY good relationship with K&N so dont worry! DONT forget to mention you are a Rennlist Member and BUY YOUR RECHARGER KIT!!!
About the MAF....MAF are sensitive, dont run a FOAM filter, DONT soak your K&N in OIL. In fact most K&N have such a light coat on it will not even effect the MAF. Like anything be careful and read the directions!
I guess I don't get it (maybe I'm slow!). People using the K&N say they like them and have never had any trouble with them. But with no documented performance gains, why would you bother?
I sometimes see people claim better throttle response or better "top end" but it's never documented. Even the filter people are careful to claim better breathing or air flow, but they never seem to claim extra horsepower.
Here's a couple of references that claim that K&N allows more particulate dirt into the engine than stock paper filters. They showed some improvement in air flow iwith the K&N, which at least in BMWs resulted in a slight performance improvement in older BMWs, but no improvement at all in recent vintage models.

By the way, my take on what I've read is that you CAN achieve some performance improvement on the track with cone type filters. Whether they let in more dirt and reduce engine longevity is an open question.
I've seen all that when I've researched filters in the past. I'm sure that there's no bias in K&N's assessment of their own products.
Anyway, the "Independent Tests" they cite just show the results for K&N, there is no control and no direct comparison to other types of filters. Pretty worthless.
Whatever company/sponsor that pays the most money.
Like what coolant is used on a race car. Well, it is said, they do not use coolant as it is not permitted, because it is slippery if it leaks on a track. But there is a sponsor sticker on the car.
Just a guess.
Just to try to balance this out:
http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm
I've read several *independent* tests recently that boil down to the following:
- K&Ns might flow slightly more than a stock paper filter when brand new, but this slight advantage is almost immediately lost after a bit of use
- K&Ns load up with dirt quicker than a paper filter, because they have much fewer pleats and therefore surface area
- K&Ns let through a significantly higher amount of dirt than your typical OEM paper filter
I've personally been converted from a K&N zealot to paper filters. Using one blew the MAF on my recent GTI 1.8t, and cause premature engine wear on one of my older Hondas. After reading the tests, I know why.
Scott.
Okay, with your 996 engine nearing max RPM and the throttle wide open what is the rate of airflow through the intake filter? That's the rate you will need to duplicate if you expect to "wick" all of the "excess" oil from your K&N after you clean and oil it. And for how long? And oh, if you want a "clean" K&N after this wicking process you need a cleanroom to provide clean airflow so you don't foul the filter during the wicking process.
So, just how inefficient is the OEM filter? Obviously it isn't going to restrict airflow at all until you start approaching max RPM with a fully open throttle. So let's guess that the OEM filter provides enough restriction at WOT & max RPM high airflow volumes to reduce the intake airflow by 10%. For a 300HP engine that's 30HP, pretty serious stuff.
But then how much of that can be made up by using a K&N?
Obviously not all of the 10%, that would make the K&N equal to having NOTHING to filter the incoming airflow, and we know that can't work. 5% maybe...
That puts us down to only a 15HP advantage.
We're talking about a $60,000, $70,000, maybe even a $100,000 car here. Save money on filters by using K&N......
Be extremely diligent about cleaning the K&N as often as it needs and just as careful and diligent about removing 90% of the oil that would otherwise wick into the engine.....
How much is that OEM filter, now, again???
Sure, I blow my motor and in return you buy me a new filter....
LOL!
I think we all know that any damage, other than MAF, from using a K&N will be long enough in duration that no real proof will be available.
