Body shop I've used a couple of times on other cars quoted $865 to use a token amount of filler and repaint the bumper cover with clearcoat, price escalates to $1,400+ to replace the bumper cover, with a greater chance of paint not matching 100% due to the car's age (over a year old).

..i had the pleasure <g> of watching another kid back into my front bumper as in some old 15 year old used lexus (must have thought he was big pimpin in his $2k used lexus)...

Nothing on these cars is cheap to fix...the damage is pretty minimal, and as I said, had I been running a front plate, the bumper would have been protected.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

...sitting with some friends on a sofa in my cigar shop on a Saturday afternoon, looking out the window towards the street where my 40th was parked, I get to watch some young man roll his '99 Tracer back into the nose of my car. He apparently was just learning to drive a manual, and rolled the three or four feet between our cars. Man that was painful to watch! No major damage, obviously, other than a few scratches where the front license plate would normally be installed, and the kid was decent enough to apologize and give me his insurance card. Bodyshops were closed around here on Saturday afternoon, so my task next week is to find out how much repainting the bumper will be, then tracking down the kid's insurance company (which, I might add, is in a neighboring state). The kid mentioned at the end of our exchange that his girlfriend seated in the passanger seat had initially advised him to just drive off, and I told him that would have been a very poor decision since we had his plate number from inside the store. Funny thing is, Saturday was the first day I had driven the car since well before Christmas!
Let's hope a shop can polish the paint back to new condition. It's good to see an honest person who was willing to take responsibility for his/her mistake. The GF needs to get the boot.
wknopf,
If you ever decide to teach anger management classes let me know -- I'll sign up! It's amazaing how you managed to stay calm after watching the whole thing unfold. But I guess it is good that no one was hurt, that the damage to your car seems like it is merely cosmetic and that the guy stuck around to give you his insurance info. I hope everything turns out well.
Bummer, and congrats on handling that like an adult. Can you imagine how the kid felt. He was raised well but that's a difficult encounter for anyone to initiate. I learned that particular parking avoidance the hard way too and now have a euro turbo bumper on my 993C4S beacuse of the same thing. I cant see any bumper cover upgrade upside to your situation however because that's the most beautiful 996 Porsche ever designed (no bias here ;0). Maybe you can get the Armourfend/Stongard treatment thrown in with the repair?
i had a similar encounter a few months ago...
i never parallel park, but i did this as an example to show my friend how people in seattle could care less about hitting another person's car when parking on the street.. i was like.. i bet you anything someone is going to back into my car.. so i got a seat near the window next to my car.. and what do you know.. 10 minutes later...
..i had the pleasure <g> of watching another kid back into my front bumper as in some old 15 year old used lexus (must have thought he was big pimpin in his $2k used lexus)... living in the city, some people think that when you parallel park, the way to measure the distance is to simply keep backing up until you hit the other car to measure your distance...
the look on the kids face as i walked out as soon as he knew it was my car car was priceless... (i don't think he expected anyone to be watching) maybe next time he'll learn not to gauge his distance by hitting another car behind him to find out how he's parked...
as i watched it unfold from the seat inside the dining establishment, i went out, and the guy was very apologetic and luckily no damage a buffer couldn't take out... the thing is his girlfriend tried to blame it on me for heavens sake... i usually don't hit women... but i was pretty damn close... i don't know why you guys marry em <g>
Wknopf: That totally sucks!... At least he had the cojones to acknowledge his mistake and deal with it. Now he just needs to dump that idiot girlfriend. I hope your 40th's bumper is restored to its oroginal pristine condition.
Let us know how it goes.
Body shop I've used a couple of times on other cars quoted $865 to use a token amount of filler and repaint the bumper cover with clearcoat, price escalates to $1,400+ to replace the bumper cover, with a greater chance of paint not matching 100% due to the car's age (over a year old). I elected to go with the $865 and have filed a claim with the other guy's adjuster, Badger Mutual. We will see what they have to say. Nothing on these cars is cheap to fix...the damage is pretty minimal, and as I said, had I been running a front plate, the bumper would have been protected.
Parking by feel is pretty comman in seattle Which is why our truck goes downtown instead of the P-cars.
Also why i have a bush bar on the front and leave the hitch ball in.
Funny the hitch has collected 2 bumpers in 4 years downtown. 1 was still attached to the car when we came back from shopping last x-mas.
