Suggestion
In other countries like Germany (or Italy) where you don't have speed limits or less enforced speed limits, people use sport cars (or sporty sedans) for fun on the Autobahn/Autostrada; there weight is not a completely bad thing; as long as you have enough power to move the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Love the GT-R. Screw that M3. After owning two, the new one is simply a disappointment, IMO.
They lost touch what the M3 really is. Now...word is the CSL could be something amazing.
C.
Looks OK since it is not stock.
One area that bugs me is the fact that the front wheel well area is much larger and higher than the rear wheel well, and so the lines of the car looks weird IMHO...or is it just me that see's this? (The 3rd picture down really shows the difference, it looks like a 20" on the front nicely tucked, and a 17" on the back nicely tucked, but with a drop in the wheel well lip very noticeable. I know my car in the sig pic looks simialr to what I am saying, but the BMW is much more obvious)
It's really unfortunate what the M division are doing - I've been an M owner for almost 6 years in the past but looking at the way they are now, there's no real "Motorsport" left in them. Granted this white one looks sweet with the kit and the additional mods but stock they look like crap.
Bleh, the whole people quoting weight thing. This sucker is outright faster than the E46 M3 which I loved. Period. The whole motorsport thing, too. Do you really want a motorsport car and wtf do mean exactly by motorsport? C'mon. The new V8 is a technological tour-de-force and the chassis can handle it+. What exactly is Porsche doing with their Carrera or GT1 engines that's so innovative since it came out watercooled style in 1999? BMW M is stronger than ever.
I can't do new either. Just silly if not a new Ferrari.
This new M3 absolutely kills the outgoing M3 and the M3 was never intended to be a race car anyways. If one wants that, get yourself the old dated looking E30 version and have yourself a nice sitdown listening to an Ovaltine radio program for your main entertainment for the evening.
I wasn't sold on the looks of it because I didn't see one that was properly modded. Now that I've finally seen one like above, I can now see how much I love the update. I probably wouldn't go as aggressive as this setup, but with a nice aerokit (looking forward to the CSL example), nice wheels, and a drop, it's so sweet.
With all that said, I'd still go for a 997 Carrera S w/ similar aero/wheel treatment over this car because it is a 911 and it does drive "better" in many ways.
In the US car enthusiasts like to have light sports cars to go to the track and on a road course weight is an important factor. In other countries like Germany (or Italy) where you don't have speed limits or less enforced speed limits, people use sport cars (or sporty sedans) for fun on the Autobahn/Autostrada; there weight is not a completely bad thing; as long as you have enough power to move the car. The E92 M3 seems to be a great Autobahn cruiser.
C'mon, let's give more credit where credit is due. You can't lump "car enthusiasts" into such a narrow definition.
The E92 M3, I don't have to point out, is beloved by many professional writers, drivers, and other enthusiasts. It's not just an autobahn cruiser. It's a fantastic to drive car that does a lot of things "good".
Nice speed. Nice handling. Good comfort. Good looks (in the case above). Killer engine.
Just an observation: Allot of cars I see are really nice when I first see them then it wears off after a year. I look for things that look timeless to me it does not need to be the best, fastest or most dependable, but I should be able to look at the car 20-30 years from now and still say "WOW" Some older Porsches, Dino's and lamborghini's and others still reflect that to me years after.
You're right; I didn't mean to provide a comprehensive definition for "Car enthusiasts" nor for all driving pleasures of the M3; just tried to open the perspective that car manufacturers try to built cars for more than the US market and especially for a broader audience than "hobby racers" that go to the track on weekends, so the "whole people quoting weight thing" is a very limited decision criteria for the wide range of potential M3 buyers.
The car looks great and is of course a great drivers car; I love BMWs, especially the 3 serie. I own my 5th BMW now and it'll not be my last one. I even think they make a lot of things better than Porsche; e.g. built quality.
I didn't like the new 3 series.. until they came out with the coupe.... and now the M3 coupe...... beautiful cars.
And that mod Benjamin's link shows is even better!!!
really low... a "scraper" for sure... stock v8 M3 looks nice... don't need the body kit that's for sure.... I read somewhere that the Lexus IS-F would be more appealing to somebody coming from E46 m3; could lexus have finally "done it" to BMW!!??
NASA already proved if you put a big enough motor on a space shuttle, the brick will fly. Who would have thought Bimmer would need to reprove the theory?
The car in the pics is a little overdone for my taste, but I'm sure it's fast.
Seriously, everyone pretty muched guessed the new M3 would gain some weight. The real disapointment IMHO is the new 135. That could have been a rebirth of the e30/e36 generation of lightweight Bimmers. Too bad...
I am not a vette guy(see through hood) but it should be a great track car 3300 pounds, dry sump, 15 inch rotors carbon-ceramic and Brembos. that and a 1g skid. I look forward to seeing a couple out at our track.
i was hoping this car would get hated on like no other here, but my hopes are now deflated - pleasantly so.
rennlist does have some remnants of modern/progressive taste.
IMHO the E30 and the E36 M3s were what MMotorsports was all about.....the E46 and E90 are bangled and mangled with way too much emphasys on electronic wizardry......and weight and high cost
The E30 M3 was designed and justified by BMWs race effort and this is what BMW needs to get back to....not supercars for the ultra wealthy
yea it looks nice....but at what cost?
no thanks
Ray,
Couldn't agree with you more, I was really holding high hopes for the 135i but they killed that one too.
However, for those quoting the 3700 lb weight for the M3...this figure includes a 75KG driver (150lbs), luggage (15lbs) and a fuel tank that's 90% full. Several magazines have done real world weight testing that is much closer to the 3500 mark. And while this is still an additional 100+ lbs over the E46 it's not the number that comes along with the initial shock when you see the 3700 published number.
Yes it's still heavy but it's a GT car...and it's pretty light compared to it's competition in that class (C63, RS4, IS-F, etc).
Again, I will own one as a street car...but I'll keep the 996 around for track days and spirited weekend driving.
Andy
Cost of doing business in the automotive world today. The cost of paying its employees and having money left over for future development/growth. What's at cost is competing and winning.
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here, that you're speaking out of a desire to reflect back on your good car memories dating back to the 90s aka nostalgia.
Again, I love this M3 and would love to have one, but just like with a lot of women in my life, timing is off. I got a taste of the 911 and like AudiOn28s, I need more of a car that's a weekend driver (911+) than a fast/capable grand tourer that is the E92 M3.
wowsers...I like it. I'm going to have to agree with Ben on this one.
The stock M3 looks like crap...lowered with those rims--much better. The stock E92 rims are terrible (what the hell was BMW thinking--they look like they came off of a ford or something).
The body kit is a bit much for me, but it certainly does work well for a show car. That front lip would be torn to shreds in a week of normal driving. I don't think I'll ever own one, but it's the best of the new generation GT sedans (C63, S4, IS-F).
I still take my 03 E39 M5 over this new M3 anyday... but I might consider trading in my wife 05 M3 for one... hahaha .. V8 in a smaller car... I can only imagine ... but the looks of it is really a killer for me on any newer bmws which is why I still have my 03 E39 M5 vs of trading it for the Bangled E60 M5 with no personality and rawness left in it.
Competing and winning do cost - I agree, You can buy one of those 07/08White mmotorsports 3series from BMW for only 125 - 200k right? Yea, I do still have those good memories...I luv'd my E36 M3 almost bought a E46 and would buy a EVO M3 E30 anyday - look at prices of these as they are rising....yea and I prefer the older Bimmers.....that is why I own a 85 Alpina B7 Turbo.....
Ben I would like to have one of these new M3s also, 65/75k right? but probably would buy a 03/4 M5 with low miles as they have all the ***** I need and more and can be had for decent money. Bottomline would you agree that we both would rather have a TT for what a new M3 will cost? I know I would...a screw the backseat M5.
i'd love to drive the evo e30 m3 to see what all the hype is about.
i'm not a fan of the 996 tt. way too laggy for me. 997TT lag is about all i could handle. also the prob with the 996 for me is that there are very few with the nice interior bits to make it look cool. else, anything short of cf/body matched console, sport seats with painted backs... full leather etc.... the 996 interior is an absolute joke.
i'd much rather have the v8m3 over a 996tt.
The old M5 wasn't one of the first Active Steering cars, was it? Personally, I think the styling was about perfect on the E39, and I like the styling of the E60, but after seeing the episode of Top Gear where they point out how freakin' complicated the car is to drive fast, I'll pass.
