Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check procedure' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check procedure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

But while he is in there it is good to replace any wear items.

You must feel the same otherwise why replace a good IMSB?$$
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The independent shop said I need a new flywheel if I get a new clutch. I'm doing a RMS and AMS bearing. There is some free play in the clutch pedal but not much. They want $1900 for RMS and the AMS, $3500 with new clutch. The flywheel adds $900. Does that sound right? Thank, Cory in Reno.
You don't say how many miles. The hydraulic clutch is self adjusting. As the clutch wears it tends to get harder to depress.
If over 50k I would change the flywheel. Not necessarily due to surface wear but the Dual mass flywheels tend to get loose.

Can the dual Mass Flywheel be twisted approx. 15mm in each direction, left/right, and does it return to approximately its initial position? If so it is good.
Can the DMF be twisted beyond dim stated above without a noticeable increase in the spring force? Or is it fixed (no rotation?) if so bad
You might also want to change the Air Oil Separator, AOS, while you are in there. It is much easier to change with the trans out.
If it helps at all, i have an '02 and paid close to $4k for a new clutch, flywheel, IMS and RMS not too long ago so the price doesn't sound too far off. Some will surely tell you that you are paying too much and others will says its about right but when it comes to servicing your car, you need to consider the reputation of the indy, your comfort factor with the indy and where in the country you live as there are definitely price differences geographically.
I'm no mechanic and won't even pretend to be one but if you trust your indy, and the price does seem about right, than all is good. Shopping for the lowest price around isn't always the best option but sometimes you do get what you pay for. Good luck.
39k is a little early for Clutch pack and flywheel.
Sounds like your indy is playing it conservatively. But while he is in there it is good to replace any wear items.

At $1600 He probably is not making much $ on the parts. The labor is the same new or old parts. I would replace them. How soon do you want to have it back in for clutch, 20k or 90k?
sounds pretty close to right.... is this an estimate or actually being done...
my shop always estimates you will need it, but does not always replace it (so the bill is lower than estimate = happy customer)
if its out, have them show you why its bad, there is a test...they should know the test - it involves rotation and spring back
There is no reason to replace the flywheel unless its friction surface is obviously damaged and renders the FW unusable.
As for the dual mass feature, there is a bench test that can be done to check if the FW should be binned because the dual mass feature is not working properly.
$900 for a new FW sounds about right, provided of course a new one is required/needed.
However, the clutch job exposes the RMS and IMS area so the prices quoted sound a bit high to me. It appears to me the shop is quoting you each job's price as a stand alone job.
Sincerely,
Macster.
+1. Flywheels don't go bad at 39k nor do clutches. Is your's symtomatic at 39k? It's the pressure plate that I'd worry about. They're the weak link....
