POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello board...have looked at the anniversary model and like it....prices and discounts seem all over the board....some little discount and no porsche rebate and others fron a friends recent buy up to 20K off.....what do you think and experiences out there??? Should i wait yet they are all going too... thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

I would wait until the 2005s arrive, by then, under 70 should be possible.

POST 3Original post

I just heard about a slightly used one for sale up here - the guy is buying a GT3. Probably could get a VERY good deal on it. PM me if you're interested.

POST 4Original post

If you like all the options on this car, with all the discounts available, it's a heck of a buy. If the options don't mean much to you, then you may want to just order a coupe the way you want it. I think the above post indicating you will be able to buy one for under 70 in a few months is a little aggressive.

POST 5Original post

Roger One of the dealers out west here(Carlsen I think) already had a demo offered at $69,950.

POST 6Original post

I've bought one and sold it for a TT. It is a lovely car with alot of extras .....the leather luggage that comes with it is very fine. The car is very fast 0-60 4.7/4.8 secs. All my friends said the same thing when they saw it....nice wheels. DonnyJ

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the great replies and advice.....i will keep looking and maybe wait a month til the new model comes out......

POST 8Original post

At around $74K the 40th anniversary edition is a steal. I just sold an X51 for a GT3, but you're talking almost $35K difference (new to new). There is a lot to be said for buying a 40th anniversary and waiting for the bugs to be worked out of the 997. Assume you lose 50% over 5 years (a historic occurence) then it has cost you about $7k per annum to drive a Porsche (special too!), how can you loose? It all depends on your needs, if you need the backseat, It's a no brainer the X51 is an under-rated misunderstood package and if you have $35K more (and don't need the back seat) go for the GT3. Now if you're considering the 997S then that'll be an extra $20k over the 40th. Let me repeat, the 40th at around $74K is one sweet deal...don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the great comments....the anniv 911 is a great car and for 20k off a great buy from the posts....going to wait this month to look at the new model to see differences and pricing....

POST 10Original post

I just picked up my anniversary yesterday. Had a C4S before but the current deals got my attention. The ann. is great. Feels very light and direct and even though it's not broken in, it feels like it's quite a bit quicker. There's great deals out there now and at current prices it's a lot of car.

POST 11Original post

NLash: Are you saying you sold your C4S for the 40th Ann? I too am in the market for either a 40th or will wait for the 997. I have a 40th Ann car picked out at my dealer and the price is set (approx. 19k off MSRP). I love the car. According to the 40th brochure the car has a curb weight of 3020 which is lighter than I expected and just the way I like it. Can you discuss a little more why you like the 40th better the C4S. Thanks. Colm: Most posts I read about the X51 package say it is a ripoff and does nothing to improve the performance of the car. What are your thoughts on the X51 package? Thanks guys

POST 12Original post

The car is quite quick---through the twisties its deceptively fast!!! I wouldnt have ordered the X51 on the c2 coupe but with the deal on the 40th --I choose it over the c2 I had coming in. Car looks sharp --turbo front end and such--I mean you could do alot worse in life than choosing this car. I cudnt wait 4 weeks so 6 months was out of the question. Im from the instant gratification generation!!!!!! Its your dime so spend it wisely--but you'll be grinning ear to ear no matter what u drive (as long as its a P-car). Id also really like to test drive the cayenne TT to see what feels like -- Mike

POST 13Original post

This picture says it all. The car is also a daily driver that hauls my wife and 2 y/o boy to store as comfortably as it rips around the track.

POST 14Original post

ZO650th: I like the feel and handling of the 40th better than the C4S. I bought the C4S slightly used a year and a half ago at price that was pretty good at the time. It was my first modern day P car, last was a 78 911SC Targa. I was hooked on the wide body and all wheel drive and never even drove a C2. The C4S is a great car but just doesn't have lightness and feel of a C2. I think that at todays prices (18-20K off) the 40th is the best deal on a new P car in years. It looks great and is a total blast. As far as the X51 package goes, it seems that most of the people who think it isn't worth much have never driven one. Those who have it, for the most part think it's great. Let you know after mine is broken in. Norm

POST 15Original post

ZO650th, Many disparaging cooments have been written about the X51 package, even before the 40th Aniv. apperared. That was amazing because there were very few around, and people were drawing conclusions from paper, and particularly the torque and horse power paper curces. To me its a little like bench racing, most of the comments were uninformed speculation, or lucky guesses at best. If you follow the 996TT posts i think you will see that the preferred Turbo package is the X50, but nobdy wanted to pay for it up front. So there was something there after all. Driving the X51 back to back with the 320HP 911 will highlight a significant difference in the two cars. The X51 just seems to go like the wind, and if the 40th is reallly ligher then it will be even better. I sold my X51 for a GT3 (I like the idea of pure function, even if I can't drive it) but had I not been able to get one I would have traded for the 40th. Remember, I paid the premium and I thought there was value there, now with the big discount..how can you go wrong. The 997S no doubt will be better, but is it worth $20K more, and why not wait until there is more supply and fewer bugs (the pioneers are the guys with the arrows in their backs!). Like I said before, if you assume a used Porsche will be worth 50% of its value in 5 years, then for about $7K a year you've got a great driving experience. Hope this helps!

POST 16Original post

Colm and NLash, thanks for taking the time to provide your helpful comments and insight about the X51 and C4S! It seems the 40th really is a great deal at the current discounts and I will most likely be getting the one I saw yesterday at the dealer. I appreciate your help.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great replies....what do you think is the invoice cost of this car??? and is their a wesbite to get all the specs on the car i already looked at he porsche site.....thanks again

POST 18Original post

My understanding is that the markup on a typical 911 is about 13%. If you apply this general rule to the 40th, then a $90k MSRP car would cost the dealer about $78k. So getting one for about $72-73k is a real steal. As for the features on the 40th, some dealers may still have the booklet that was made for the 40th. This booklet lays out all the features and specs of the car. As you noted the Porsche web site does not specify the details on the 40th.

POST 19Original post

I believe the dealers have an additional $10,000 credit on top of that from Porsche which means they could sell the cars for under $70 and still make a small profit.

POST 20Original post

Yes, Porsche is providing dealers with $10k on the 40th so as you said, even in the low $70's, there is still some profit for the dealers. Very tempting price....

POST 21Original post

Here's a link to the online brochure that explains all the stuff that comes with the 40th Anniversary model. http://www3.us.porsche.com/english/u...el/default.htm

POST 22Original post

I saw a 40th anniv yesterday but the window sticker didnt mention alleged standard features like: PSM sport suspension heated seats (sport) Also, xenon lamps seem to be an option too? No washers were present. If the above arent standard, seems there isnt much I would desire in the usual package compared to a comparably equipped C2. BTW, that car spec'ed out ar $90K.

POST 23Original post

The 40th comes with X51 engine package, sport suspension, bixenon lights, heated seats, all nat. leather, turbo front end, and more as standard equip. An awful lot of car at current prices - around $75000 and an absolute blast to drive. I've only had mine a week but there is nothing about it I don't like. Norm

POST 24Original post

Thanks for the reply, I was quite taken with its good looks compared to the usual C2. Can you confirm that the options I mentioned are listed and are no charge on your window sticker? I will clarify the options on the car I saw with the dealer tomorrow, who didnt seem to know much. Said it was a basic car. Ive already negotiated a great deal, but I was lead to believe it didnt have PSM, heated seats, sports suspension or xenons. -Richard

POST 25Original post

These items are no cost, standard features of this model. They should let you inspect the car to confirm the features are present. Some dealers order comfort seats instead of the sports seats.

POST 26Original post

Richard, They are definately standard. Side skirts are also standard. My car also has comfort seats with power - $1550; Nav. - $2680; rear wiper -$345; Bose (which is much better than was on my 02 C4S) - $795; remote CD changer. List price was $96,765, bought it in the high $70s. Norm

POST 27Original post

Thanks Norm, Sounds like a beauty. Guess I will be having an educational chat with the dealer soon. Hope the one on his lot isnt an orphan, optionwise, so to speak, but rather the real thing. I love the look! -Richard

POST 28Original post

Funny that you should ask. I'm up in Door County (north of Green Bay) Wisconsin and an old friend of mine drove his 996 anniversary model up here from Chicago. Since I know the roads up here from many years of visiting this wonderful place, he let me drive his car and show him some of the good roads. From the 996's I've driven (no anniversary models until yesterday), the anniversary model has a better feel. You can easily feel the power coming from the x51 option. I liked it a whole lot. With the discounts that seem to be available, I'd be really tempted. But I'm still in love with my 993. Since I drove the anniversary 996 yesterday, it's killing me not to have my 993 up here! Seriouslyl, I may have to tow it up here on one of subsequent trips to the 'county.' Would have been great to show up at Ekl Hart Lake this year with my car instead of my wife's Yukon. Those discounts on the anniversary model are heard to beat. I'd get one and give the 997 a few years of break in. Best of luck. Let us know what yo do. chuck

POST 29Original post

An Anniversary Coupe in the low $70K's would be a "reasonable" (for Porsche) buy with advertised dealer discounts of around $18K. However, with the reported sales decline of 911's of almost 30 percent this year (and Boxsters almost 50 percent) you can expect deep year end manufacturer to dealer discounts similar to last year's $13K on the Cabriolets. Bruce Anderson's article in the latest Excellence shows the value of 996's dropping like a rock with owners unable to sell at normal depreciation expectation prices. (Note that he has a significant typo error in the value table) In such a soft market, you should be able to find a very low mileage 2003 911 Coupe in the mid-50's within the next few months particularly after the 997 introduction. The few that are actually selling on eBay are near that range while those offered in the mid-$60K arena are drawing Zero Bidders. Pity the 1999/2000 Pre Facelift 996 Owner's trying to sell...they may be better off donating the car to a Charitable Organization for a writeoff!

POST 30Original post

perrys7342: Are you saying that you think even for a 2004 40th Anniv bought brand new for about $74k there will still be significant depreciation in one year? There is already a discount from MSRP of about $19k and the car has the X51 package as well as some other goodies that NO other C2 will have. I was hoping that the 40th at this price would hold it's value even in light of the introduction of the 997. Any thoughts are appreciated.

POST 31Original post

My guess is that there will still be significant depreciation on the Anniversary model, even getting a great deal out the door. The primary reason (other than typical car dynamics) will be the presence of the 997. Before long, people will be clamoring for the new new thing, the 997--the 996 will be yesterday's model. And trying to sell an Anniversary coupe, someone's gonna say, "Well, for a few grand more I could have the base 997 Carerra." Look at 993 Turbos. They now can be had in the 60s. Not too long ago, those cars were $120k. But someone shopping for a 993TT can say, "Well, for a few grand more I could have the 996 Turbo, plus warranty, etc." It never ends!

POST 32Original post

Sean: see your point. Perhaps for the same money (about $73k, I should wait and get the base 997. It already has PSM and 18" wheels. Just needs a good color, floor mats and B-Xenons. This would price out at about $72k. What do you think?

POST 33Original post

I dont know about you--but I havent seen too many "stripper" 996 around--usually spec'ed with a bunch of items--even the basic model at $68k was at least $75k with the "std" options. But I guess a special order--you can get it ala carte as you wish Mike

POST 34Original post

To ZO650th: My guess after 42 years of various Porsches owned is that the Anniversary Coupe will take a first year hit of about 10 percent even at the deeply discounted price level as soft as the market is currently. I had a new 1975 25th Anniversary 911 Anniversary Coupe which actually had a new price drop from the previous years but after a few years there was no significant price differential from a regular 911 of the same year. Same for the 1988 Carrera I had...same color as the so-called 25th 911 Anniversary edition and prices stabilized. Again, a guess but the deep discount even with options like the X51 is just more in line with perceived value. Note also that Porsche has "covertly" made certain options, like the original $6500 Technic Package, standard on late production 2004 C2 911's while retaining the same base MSRP. Includes some desirable high priced options like Power Seat Package, Xenons, etc as well as some "Fluff". While I agree with some that a new 997 will likely be a "better value", remember that each and every new series Porsche ever produced has had significant "teething" problems ranging from design, engineering, and initial manufacturing flaws. These have always taken a model year and up to two model years to correct the most significant deficiencies which are just inexcusable (well almost!) in an expensive automobile. At Rennfest II, I suggest to Karl Ludwigsen, the author of the seminal Porsche bible, "Excellence was Expected", that he write a sequel called "Arrogance was Expected" for some of the stubborn engineering and manufacturing blunders seemingly inherent in Porsche's initial production model runs. The 996 is probably now as refined as a initial water pumper can get. My suggestion is hammer them down to $70K-72K or so, throw out the Bose, 10 CD, chrome wheels, illogical Navigation if equipped, and enjoy the sound and response of the engine, driveline, and suspension mechanicals (or digital imposters) which is the heart and soul of what a Porsche is supposed to be...Forget about depreciation and what may come and enjoy every day you drive it. POST 35Original post

Here's another pice of advice: Don't get too hung up the $$$. Figure out how much you want to spend and then buy the newest car you can afford that has the options you want. It's that simple. Your new car, whatever you choose, will depreciate every single day that you own it, including about a 10-12% as soon as you drive it off the lot. Depreciation will contunue at roughly same rate that P cars have depreciated for the last 40 years, so.... just buy it, drive it, and enjoy it. There will ALWAYS be next year's model to look forward to. If you take good care of you car, which it sounds like you will, you can probably trade in your P-car every three to four years (if you're so inclined) without losing a dime. Gary

POST 36Original post

All good advice for the delayed gratification generation. That's what I plan to do exactly with the next new one- use it well past depreciation BTW, the options on the 04 anniv are present but not listed on the window sticker, as the cognicenti have previously indicated. Makes it much more attractive. I'm test driving a loaded seal grey C2 vs the anniv Friday on our crummy roads, as I will drive it daily (except for blizzards of course). I'm converted by the axiom 'life is too short to drink cheap wine and drive cheap cars (every day)'. Makes depreciation immaterial.

POST 37Original post

I feel sorry for the guys who bought the 40th Anniversary edition for near MSRP when the car was first introduced. Now I'm reading that this car be be bought in the mid $70s. Man, any of the guys who paid near MSRP are going to have a rude shock if they have to sell their cars in the near future.

POST 39Original post

With all due respect, I don't think it's possible to buy a new car and not take a huge depreciation hit. About the best you can do is to hold the car long term (I've seen some financial planners recommend at least 6 years)--that helps to mitigate the loss in value by spreading out the cost of ownership. If you are financing the purchase and own a home, it may make sense to finance the car using home equity (making any interest tax deductible). My approach, bland though it may be, is to keep cars a long time. A more interesting strategy might be to buy an older Porsche (say, a 930 or 911SC or a 993) that has already been hit with most of its depreciation. Who knows, you might get a car that increases in value. That won't happen with a 996/997 anytime soon.

POST 40Original post

If you're worried about depreciation then you should probably forget any Porsche. Once you buy it you'll want to treat it like a garage queen and then you won't enjoy it at all, because you'll then start to worry about dings, rock chips, rms, little noises, etc., the list goes on and on. If you buy one, try and consider it a disposable item, and then try to dispose of it (without being stupid or wreckless). Two things will happen 1) You'll be amazed at how reliable it is and 2) You'll really enjoy those depreciation dollars.

POST 41Original post

perrys7342: Thanks for the great advice and insight! I agree that there will more than likely be "teething" issues with the first year of the 997. At this point, I will either wait until year 2 of the 997 or get the 40th at these great discounts and like Colm said....enjoy it and not worry about the inevitable depreciation. If I have to worry about babying the car and looking for every scrape and scratch just to preserve a little more value, then I would be better off keeping my Lexus and forgetting the whole P-car thing. Life really is too short to worry about these things.

POST 42Original post

Amen. Ive had three garage queens but am determined to break the vicious cycle of the obsessive-compulsive owner with this next purchase. I'm not unloading any cars however so I can still obsess over the C4S which still looks showroom. Let us know what you do. -Richard

Thanks for your great posts and discusssion....going to wait til august when the 997 makes its debut then make my move on the 911 anniversary model for high 60K push w/o nav system what do you think???? thanks for all your great comments

POST 44Original post

Boxsterdoc47: It looks like we are both thinking the same way. I don't want the Nav or Rear wiper or 6-CD changer or power seats. I may pull the trigger in the $70-71K range so as not to lose out before they are all gone. C4S/914-6: If I do get this car, I am not going to obsess over it like I did my Z06 and M Coupe. Going to use it everday and keep it for a long time. By the way, I love the C4S.....enjoy it!

POST 45Original post

That's where I'm at $70K, dont want nav, 6cd or comfort power seats either. Also negotiating for a p-car loaner whenever I bring it in for service. Good luck to you, hope you get what you want rather than what you need.

POST 46Original post

A more interesting strategy might be to buy an older Porsche (say, a 930 or 911SC or a 993) that has already been hit with most of its depreciation. Who knows, you might get a car that increases in value. That won't happen with a 996/997 anytime soon. I have a friend who does exactly what you suggest. He buys older, low mileage Porsches, holds them for about four years, and then resells them for about 90% of what he paid. Since he does virtually 100% of his maintenance and buys parts at wholesale (he's an Audi mechanic), the price of owning Porsches has been downright inexpensive for him.

POST 47Original post

I have done that with my other toys but these cars are not the most reliable for daily transportation or easy to work on yourself given the level of computerization. Also, the 996 motor has the potential for 'unresolved' issues yet so I wouldnt want to be out there without a 50,000 warantee.

POST 48Original post

And by the way, we well know the issues with the 996. The 997 will be a total crap shoot for the early gamblers.

The downside of financing thru home equity loan--is your "taking" money from a potential APPRECIATING ASSET and putting it towards a DEPRECIATING LIABILITY--Im no account or english major at that--but just my 2 cents Mike--I own a 40th --yikes!!!!

The downside of financing thru home equity loan--is your "taking" money from a potential APPRECIATING ASSET and putting it towards a DEPRECIATING LIABILITY--Im no account or english major at that--but just my 2 cents Mike--I own a 40th --yikes!!!! I think a good strategy when buying a Porsche is just to lease the dam car, and then drive the hell out of it. I know three guys who have 996s and they rarely drive their cars. They don't drive it in the winter. Hell, they don't drive the car when they think it will rain. I'm sure they save a few dollars in depreciation, but wouldn't it be better to get a 39 month, 36K mile lease and then drive the car every day. Depending upon how the car is optioned you can get a 996 for around $1100 a month.

POST 51 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great discussion from the board...on discounting....this car is now a year old model 10K and porsche incentive discount 10K and dealer discounting unknown 3 to 5K so possible 25 K total from msrp or below invoice one the new model 997 comes out......already saw one discounted to 68K???? what else are you all hearing ???? thanks

POST 52Original post

Is that $68k for a brand new one? If so I would grab it! I'm holding out for one at $70k-$71k but really want to see the 997 in person first. There seems to be a pretty good supply of 40th cars around so I think there will still be some left come end of August. The 40th may turn out to be one of the best last minute deals for a new Porsche in years.

POST 53Original post

Regarding financing, I really think it would be better to loan the money to yourself on a home equity. That would be 1/3 cheaper than leasing. Flip the car at the end of the warrantee. Total outlay would be less by my calculation even if the car was worth 1/2 of purchase at $70K four years out. That's $35K divided by 4yrs divided by 12 months = $729/mo. Factor back the $100/mo interest less 1/3 on tax write-off= roughly $800/month to purchase by home equity over 4 years. But then I'm no accountant so fire away at this logic. Please.

POST 54Original post

The new Excellence magazine (received it today) has a good article on the 40th. A generally positive review but does talk about the positioning of it vis a vis the C4S and GT3 (which probably helps explain why the large discounts now being offered). I seriously considered one in March but then it was only 5K off and I passed, as it wasn't worth it for me to spend 90K for it. At 70-72K, I think it is a great bargain and a very nice package.

POST 55Original post

Only thing wrong with your logic is the sales tax. When you lease the tax is paid monthly, on a prorated basis, assuming that you have state sales tax.

POST 56Original post

Sometimes we focus so much on theoretical "present value" calculations that we forget about the real world. As a CPA (non-practising) I used to drive myself crazy with these mental gymnastics and then think I was accomplishing something. My recent experience with a "totaled" Cayenne TT taught me the that the lowest risk way to "own" a car was to lease it (assuming you're intelligent about the MF). The small increase in Present Value cost is more than offset by the reduction in ownership risk, plus on a lease you pay the sales tax as you go so that helps. If you can get a MF around .002X (I know there's .0018 out there) you're doing OK so don't worry..just don't put any money down on a lease and leave your home equity where it belongs. Back to the topic the anniversary edition at $73-5 depending on options is a steal..don't drive yourselves crazy over-thinking the situation, been there done that. But if you hanker after a GT3 (a step beyond) then "shut up" and step up to the plate, it'll cost you a lot more.

POST 57Original post

Back to the topic the anniversary edition at $73-5 depending on options is a steal..don't drive yourselves crazy over-thinking the situation, been there done that. But if you hanker after a GT3 (a step beyond) then "shut up" and step up to the plate, it'll cost you a lot more. My brother and I are co-owners of a GT3 which we bought in November '03. This car is used almost exclusively for racing, and I can't imagine using the GT3 as a commuter. So to me I don't see the GT3 as being the next step up from a C2. I'm thinking about buying a C2 as a commuter to replace my Audi TT, but if I spend more I'll probably buy the C4S. Thge 40th Anniversary edition is appealing but it has some expensive options that I wouldn't order if I customized the car, but if the car can be bought for $75K as some are posting, then it's like getting these options for free. By the way, I offered my local Porshe dealer $75K for an Anniversary car he has in the showroom, and my offer was rejected. His counter offer was $80K on a car that has an MSRP of $92K. As always it looks like the deals on this model will vary dealer to dealer. If he still has this car in his showroom at the end of the summer, I'll offer him $70K

POST 58Original post

Leasing--some states tax on the car is pro-rated but in Dirty Jersey I believe its paid all upfront--so diff strokes for diff folks. I got my 40th Anni for $80k back in April. I guess a little too quick on the draw but I cudnt wait for my first Porsche and the c2 I ordered was $75k. Mike

POST 59Original post

Good point Colm. Revised Equity Line Purchase: OK add tax 6% on $70,000 spread over 4 years. Vehicle cost $888/mo (minus insurance). Advantage- no mileage restriction. And flexibility to get out from under it when you want.

POST 60Original post

also to drag this out--balloon payments --lease like payment but with large buy out in the end and its in ur name so at the end of term u can trade in or sell if its worth more than buyout or else hand it in.. This is assuming everyone here with the car should be able to afford this---if ure living beyond ur means you're plain stupid and shud wait until YOU CAN AFFORD IT---Mike

I'm being offered $71,475 on an msrp of $91,475, in the north east. Pull the trigger or wait? Any better deals out there?

POST 62Original post

Where in the North East if you don't mind me asking. This seems about right compared to my own shopping. If the car is Brand New at that price it is a steal. Just keep in mind for the same money, you can get a 2005 997 base Carrera with Xenons and floor mats. (The 997 already comes standard with PSM and 18" wheels). Actually I like the wheels a lot better on the standard Carrerra than on the S model. But you would have 325 HP rather than 345 HP and you would be getting more luxury features in the Anniversary car. And finally, you would not have to deal with the fist year gremlins which are bound to show up in the 997 early cars.

POST 63Original post

If you can hold off till the 997s arrive, it might save you $1500-2000.

If you can hold off till the 997s arrive, it might save you $1500-2000. Assuming there are any left. Valley Motors in Hunt Valley MD had three Anniversary 911s in stock a couple of weeks ago. As of today they are down to one car.

POST 65Original post

I have checked SoCal dealers (many) inventory periodically, and my sense is that they are moving the 40th's out very quickly now. If you want one, I would not wait or you may find the opportunity gone. Also I wonder if the PCNA $10K dealer incentive might expire at some point, perhaps on 997 launch??

POST 66Original post

No Anniversaries at my dealer. They have a GT3 and a 996TT cab with a sold sign with someone's name on it in the window. They have a few Boxters and 2 or 3 Cayennes and that is about all they have right now.

POST 67 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great posts and discussion..thank you all.....is porsche still offering the factory rebate of 10K for the 911 aniversary still and when does it expire??? I was told when the 997 comes in... await your replies....

POST 69Original post

This is one of the most interesting threads I've ever followed. I know, and before you write it - I must lead a very sheltered life. I'm only let out on odd days. Discount on a 40th - dream on in UK. Perhaps a set of floor mats (wrong colour to add to the insult) and that's about it.

POST 70Original post

.....is porsche still offering the factory rebate of 10K for the 911 aniversary still and when does it expire??? As of July 8 the incentive was still in effect. My dealer has no idea when the incentive will expire. I would guess that with the way the cars have been moving, the incentive exxpiration question will be a moot point because there won't be any cars left. By the way don't be surprised if your salesman is unaware of the Porsche incentive. I talked to two Porsche salesman and neither one knew about it. In each case I confirmed the incentive with the Sales Manager.

POST 71Original post

You can check the onhand inventory (if they update promptly!) of any Porsche dealer thru the dealer locator link: www.porschedealer.com/dealer/index.html which is for North America, but links are also available off the Porsche AG website worldwide. Still available 40th Anniversary Coupes within a 200 mile radius in the Midwest anyway... Perry

POST 72Original post

Well, this was a great discussion. After a long (sh77 eating) test drive today, I pulled the plug on the car I was chatting about earlier. $20K below sticker plus got a set of Porsche mats thrown in gratis. Dealer also installs a battery maintainer at his cost. Plus an executive plan with p-car loaner for service. There are few left around here within 200 miles, but all configured with the bling and seats I didnt want. Had to argue for the price as the manager wanted to go $19K. Thanks to you guys I could confidently tell him $20K was the going rate so he acquiesced. No regrets. The comparo loaded C2 was already gone. Expel goes on next after the detailing. Boy does this car move and corner compared to my 993 C4S with euro sport suspension! Have a grreat summer guys! I'm off to Cape Cod. -Richard

CS4/914-6.......glad to hear you pulled the trigger and bought the car....what options did you get and any more details on your test drive????I thought it flew like a bat out of hell and great handling too.....glad to hear you got a great deal too.....

POST 74Original post

The deal Its a basic car with only the "standard options"which was what I wanted for a daily driver. Since I have a C4S, my preference was for a C2 with PSM, bixenon, sport suspension, heated sports seats (just gorgeous with the silver backs). The goodies I wouldnt have paid for were the turbo front bumper, GT3 side rocker panel trim, polished 18" wheels, polished tail pipes, full leather interior, larger tires, X51 345 hp motor, aluminum instrument rings, matching luggage wallet keypouch and the 911 logo doo dads.- so it seems I got all that for free or at a large discount. That's why I had them throw in the mats, the only other thing I really needed. I listen mostly to NPR on the way to work so I dont need the big Bose system either. Stickered at $90,565. Couldnt get them even close to $70K on the other less optioned C2s remaining. Would only go $5-6K off sticker. This dealer is buying up as many 996s as they can. Salesman said to me there is a buying craze going on now. Guess I just contributed. I must be one of the few who thinks the later 996s are the most pretty and evolved design Porsche has come out with in the 911 series. I did peruse the 997 books at the dealer before signing. This car is much more than the standard 997 a carerra and just slightly less than the 997S in features, much much less in price and just as fast (at least on the books). At my age I dont race so much of this doesnt matter. This 911 anniv is way more than I need to put a perpetual smile on my face. Funny, on the way over in the C4S I passed up an invitation to race a Subaru WRX with blacked out windows who pulled along side and on the 911 anniv test drive was tailed by a mustang GT who I also ignored, probably 2 feet off my rear bumper at 85 mph. There is nothing to prove when youre driving a Porsche and they knew it. The ride: The motor has a turbine whine that screams nicely above 4000 rpm. It really pushes you back in the seat like the old turbos but just not that abruptly. Shifting is very direct and smooth. Cornering is very flat without any detectable lean. I took it over many rough and bumpy back roads and quite a bit of highway with prominent seams. Sport suspension was firm but not uncomfortable (like the C4S) and the car settled right down after prominet bumps. I just love it. The only criticism is the Pirelli P zeros which are loud on rough concrete pavement. I have them on the other car purposely because of their superior dry grip. I know where the Valentine will be stored now. The wife and kids are out so I just returned from driving the 914/6. Its quite a treat to drive in succession 3 very capable feeling and sounding Porsches. Best wishes in your quest. They are all great cars. I'm a very lucky guy to drive more than one whenever I want and thank the big guy upstairs everyday Regards, -Richard

C4S/914-6: It sounds like you got a great deal on a great car. There's nothing like a new car to bring a smile to an enthusiast's face.

POST 76 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great posts keep them comin......i have a dumb question.....can anyone explain what the X51 option is in detail and what it exactly does???? I have gotten conflicting explainations on this and the board knows best..........thanks again for your great discussion

POST 77Original post

In a nutshell, the X51 package is an optional package costing about $13k that adds 25hp (345 versus 320) but NO additional torque through various modifications to the engine. Some owners say they feel the difference and some say they don't. 1. Would I pay this amount for this upgrade...no 2. Am I glad it's a part of the 40th Ann.....absolutely 3. Will it add to the resale value of the car.....probably not but it might help sell a car against the competition that does not have this package. Perhaps some of the more technical board members can tell you specificially what is upgraded in the engine to derive this additional 25hp.

POST 78Original post

I'm no expert on X51, but the main thing is it's a legit factory-engineered power package. I read about the changes made to gain the extra power - they are extensive, and guaranteed by Porsche. It made me quite skeptical of aftermarket power promises, once I realized how much Porsche engineers did to extract power via X51. C4S, congrats! The 40th Anniversary is a car you can keep for the long term--and you got an incredible deal too.

POST 79Original post

Thanks guys. I dont have a frame of reference in the 996 series for performance difference of the X51. I wonder if anyone out there has the 0-60 and top speed difference numbers for X51 vs conventional hp 996 C2 motor?

POST 80Original post

You should search the Porsche website. There are HP and Torque curves there that show the difference in performance between the X51 and normal engine. If you study the curves it might give you a better idea of what to expect. The difference is somwhat subtle but it's there. Considering how much it costs though it's not all that much of a performance boost. As someone else hinted....there is no way I would believe any claims of bolt on performance adders or computer reprogramming. If there were any low hanging fruit Porsche engineers would have taken it.

Boxsterdoc47, A couple of the more active 40th Anniversary listers on eBay have been Stillwell in Kansas and Wallingford in CT (also an Autoweek Advertiser). They still show cars available on the PCA dealer inventory list. However, their last offerings on eBay were around 73 and 76K to start and neither drew any bids. Perry

POST 84Original post

I passed on an '03 coupe, MSPR 79,999 reduced to $66,500. It was a 2 year old 'new' car and just didnt do it for me in comparison to the '04 anniv at the $70,500 purchase price. I think by calling around you can make your own deal right over the phone, drive or fly to pick one up and avoid a finders fee. The options on in stock cars at dealers are listed through the Porsche website so you can verify what youre dealing on. Good luck. Let us know what you do.

POST 85 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello board....quick update since last post....spoke to a good friend of mine on the west coast and his neighbor is a porsche manager and they were talking some beers and he said they want to close out on the anniv model and porsche is offering a direct rebate of 10K exclusive of the dealers discount that could be up to 10 to 15

POST 86 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry needed to continue....10 to 15K that could also include their holdback 3 to 5K so this is direct from one of the horses mouth.....so good hunting!!!

POST 87Original post

Youve confused me here. Can you translate that info please into what total discount off MSRP could possibly be with a generous dealer? I was under the impression that Porsche had no hold back. Thanks. -Richard

POST 88 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry for the confusion.....20K off would be a great discount according to my friend....total off the msrp

POST 89Original post

I thought you had intimated that a discount of $25K was possible. Anything below $70K on a new one may be akin to stealing as it would approximate the MSRP of a base 996 C2. But in this climate who knows? Hope you find what youre comfortable with. Regards, -Richard

POST 90 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update.....i have been searching the porsche site for anniv 911 and there ARE LOTS OF THEM OUT THERE TOO......sorry for the caps hit to cap lock by accident.....when the 997 comes early next month bigger discounts maybe between 20 to 23 maybe possible or some throw in options ie mats, charger, etc who knows especially when they want to get these off their lots and they will be a year old and depreciated then....

POST 91 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone else been looking and has something to add......one salesperson would give me 20K discount sight un seen??????

POST 92Original post

Boxsterdoc, I have no doubt that despite the large discounts, the car will depreciate 10% once you drive it off the lot. I view this like timing the market- impossible- but you know when your close to bottom range. This is probably it, especially if the manufacturer's $10K dealer allowance program is finite. That's the way it works with the American programs anyway. Then when its up, there's no begging that will get it back. -Richard

POST 93Original post

Hi Z0650th: I really like the 40th. It feels lighter and more tossable than the other 911's I've had. My Turbo was a Tiptronic otherwise I probably would have kept it and it had more low end torque. The 40th needs to be kept revv'ed high to get in the power band.

POST 94 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has any one compared the 911 anniv to the targa???

POST 95Original post

Thanks mrpc12 for the info. BTW, I also have a 2004 Lexus RX330. Love that truck! At this point I have all the numbers worked out at the dealer. It comes down to $20k off on the 40th Anniversary car. However, at $72k I can still get a base 997 with Bi-Xenons, Thicker Steering wheel and floor mats (these are the only options I would get). So this is the decision I need to make rather quickly. I was hoping to see a 997 in person as I thought this would make my decision for me but I do not think there will be any 40th cars left by the end of August when the 997's are due to arrive. Going to be thinking hard about this one today. Any thoughts from you guys?....wait for the base 997 for $72k or pick up the 40th at $72k?

POST 96Original post

Boxsterdoc47: I actually love the Targa but I do not think the deals on any remaining Targa's are that good. Keep in mind with the Targa you are getting a heavier car (about 150 lbs) and less HP (320 for the Targa versus 345 for the 40th). Just the same, I certainly would conisder a Targa if the deals were similar to the 40th (i.e. $20k off MSRP) but they are not as far as I know.

POST 97Original post

"Any thoughts from you guys?....wait for the base 997 for $72k or pick up the 40th at $72k?" I went through this same calculation and you obviously know my decision. For me it was value and appearance: boiled down to a loaded vs stripped car, know defects vs unknown, functional hi performance daily driver vs garage queen keeper. Plus I love the look of the 996, front light complex with turbo bumper over the 997. I also have problems accepting the 997 interior based on the available pix. It seems to get farther away from a '911' in this regard, although the hips are mildly flared compared to the iconic 993. But my experience from having owned a 964 C4, then the 993 C4S forms my bias here. Both will depreciate the minute you sign so that's a wash. Its a tough one but you probably cant go very wrong either way as the grin factor exists for any p-car. No one needs a Porsche, only wants. I suspect your neighbors wont recognize any difference, just that its a Porsche!

POST 98Original post

Let's see... Base 997: New styling will look fresh for years (arguably a plus). New interior (arguably a minus) with horrid steering wheel. Questionable wheel design. The usual teething issues of a new model. Probably a more rigid and aerodynamic chassis. 996 40th Anniversary: Outgoing styling of the 996 will soon be last year's model. 996 interior (arguably a plus) loaded with ALL the cosmetic and performance goodies. Nice steering wheel and polished wheels. A refined model in its latter stages of production, less likely to have issues. Great deals available. Luggage! This is a quality problem to have. I think I'd prefer the 40th Anniversary because (1) I don't have to be driving the newest car on the block (2) the 996 has all of its issues settled by now (3) awesome deals available. It's incredibly rare to get $20k off a brand new loaded Porsche!

I bought the 40th with much less of a discount rather than wait for a 997. With the huge discount available now it would be a no brainer for me. It's faster and lighter than a base 997. I've put 3400 miles on mine in about 2 months and no trips to the dealer. I can't imagine a new 997 not having some minor issues especially if you get one of the first ones built.

POST 100Original post

C4S/914-6, Sean and mrpc12: Thanks for your input and insight! Well, if I am going to get the 40th, I'm gonna have to pull the trigger this week as it will not be around that much longer. Appreciate all the help. Boxsterdoc47: What have you decided to do? What kind of deals are you seeing with the Targa?

POST 101Original post

I forgot to add another factor that did it for me. Kept flipping back and forth on my screen the images of the 40th and the 997. I kept coming back to the same one. To me the 40th perfectly melds the best phenotypic features of the 996 cars- headlights, GT3 rockers, turbo front bumper, unique paint and those polished 18 inch rims. Kudos to whomever designed the package. If this is the only sleep you lose in life's decisions, youre a lucky man. I pick up mine tomorrow after a detailing. And in anticipation of that I'm gonna be sleepless! Best regards, -Richard

POST 102Original post

You are a lucky man Richard and I wish you the best of luck and great driving experiences in your 40th! Gonna lose a little sleep as well as I don't want to lose out on this great deal. The points you mentioned in your last post are right on the money.

POST 103Original post

When I bought my X51, my wife was actually looking at the Targa. This was right after we did the PDE, a test drive in each and she chose the X51 (hands down), there is a marked difference in performance, try it for yourself. At that time there was a hugh discount on the Targa (15K), and a premium in the form of the X51 package, but the performance was there. Hope this helps.

POST 104Original post

That helps a lot COLM thanks. As much as I like the Targa, the X51 in the 40th is definitely the way to go for me. I don't think they are discounting any remaining Targa's anyway.

POST 105Original post

I like my Targa and had considered a 40th (at much higher cost) in early March, as well as C4S. I got a great deal but nothing like 20K off. The Targa top looks cool, but it is not that practical - a little bigger sunroof and with it open you can't see s**t out the back window. The 40th has a sunroof which frankly is almost as good as a Targa top, it has a turbo front end, rockers and frankly looks hotter. Plus X51, full natural leather, great color, nice wheels, and even luggage. I don't think Targas have been selling well and you can probably easily get 10K off, but no way for 20K. Therefore, with these deals, I think the 40th is a no-brainer choice over a Targa.

POST 106Original post

One other factor for those leasing is that the lease on the 997 should be better since the residuals on the Anniversary model are relatively low. I have been told by my leasing company that they know about the discounts and factor these into the calcualtion.

POST 107 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great Posts Guys and Gals....you all have shown that you are passionate about your cars and that is something real special......ZO650th...great posts and I am torn between a new 03 Targa vs the 911 anniv.....I am going back this week to take another look at each car and to see what their final offers are........The targa will be two years old with the 05's coming out next month and depreciated by two years as soon as you roll off the lot yet is a new not demo with all the options I like too.....it will depend on how much they discount and throw in other enticements msrp 86K vs the 911 anniv 94Kwith great options too and is a wonderful car.....yet lots of them are disappering fast and furious too yet did find one dealer with lots (4) with different option packages too.....I do not want nav sys that a lot of them seem to have and one or another weird options......so if it comes down to low 70's between the two the anniversary is the one!!!!!! Going to look again this week and will let you all know the update........I agree with you that if we wait til end of august the anniv 911's will all be gone too.....the new 997's will be great cars yet the general car buying rule of thumb is Never buy the first year production.... or be forever going back and forth for repairs and first year problems lots of headaches........thanks hope this helps

POST 108 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Colm thanks for the comment and i felt the same thing too in test driving the too cars....I felt more connected to the road with the anniv911 withx51 vs the targa.......the anniv reminds me of my boxster with quick responsiveness and performance.......

POST 109Original post

Boxsterdoc47, please let us know what you decide to get as I will do the same. These could be the last remaining deals on two great cars!

POST 110Original post

A "No Reserve" New Car Dealer 40th Anniversary currently posted on eBay with bid at $60,100. Will be interesting to see where it goes. Note, however, that Seller reserves right to end auction at any time if purportedly sold locally. Perry

POST 111Original post

The URL for that auction is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...484290870&rd=1 Perry

POST 112 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Perrys7342......very interesting post.....just spoke a salesman this morning and said with all the options and THE CAR.. the 40th should be much higher price and we are getting such a great deal....yeah right

POST 113 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Check out the ebay ad....30K off list from 96Kmsrp are they for real???

POST 114Original post

That auction still has a couple of days remaining. I suspect it will bid up to the low $70's. Still an amazing deal as we have been seeing with these 40th cars.

POST 115Original post

The only way I can figure is that the 997 Carrera with similar performance and newer chassis will start at $70k. This might be taking all the wind out of the MSRP sales on this car.

POST 116Original post

sjsharks: I think that is a really good point. For the same money you can have the latest and greatest albeit with less options. The base 997 Carrera at $70k will still get you PSM and 18" wheels standard which are options on the 996. Something to think about.

POST 117Original post

Z06 Not sure if you have seen one but I believe there are a few 40th edition 911s with the GT3 aero kit floating around. If you could latch onto one of them for around 75, you would have something really special. If I remember where I saw one, I will post it.

POST 118Original post

Personally, I think the 40th with the x51 and less weight is more comparable in performance to the 997S. Then it wins on price.

POST 119Original post

OK, Put up or shut up This one just found a new home with other well cared for stablemates. All I can say is: YES!! It's GREAT. Thanks for the tip on the max discounts and many features of this special car. This community has been a big help. -Richard

POST 120Original post

Congrats! It looks great in the driveway instead of the dealers lot.

POST 121Original post

Congrats Richard...it looks awesome. Now it's my turn to put up or shut up

POST 122Original post

Z0650th, Once you write the check you will find relief, at least I did. This car is so smooth and effortless in performance compared to what I was used to and not too shabby to stare at either. The sport suspension is perfect on these crummy Michigan roads. The sports seats fit my mid age frame like my old pitchers mitt. Cant wait for the break-in period to be over. Shifting at 4500 rpm is killing me. My 11 year old approves, my 16 year old wants to learn to drive a stick on it and my wheeler-dealer 14 year old wants to inherit the 993. Should be a fun summer! BTW, the matching 2 pc. luggage, wallet and key pouch are very nice touches. Off to the beach, all the best to you guys. -Richard Here's an **** shot at the dealers lot.

POST 123 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Richard...great car buy and you will be enjoying it for the rest of the summer while the rest of us are still trying to decide this wonderful car......some of us are just afraid of pulling the trigger,,,congrats on your new car......going to the dealer again this week and we will see......

Elton: Gorgeous picture! Richard: Congrats again on a great looking car at an even greater price! Will be making my decision shortly and I agree with you that once the deal is done there will be no regrets on my part. It's the getting to that point that can be grueling. Oh and nice pic by the way! Robert: There's no question this is a no-brainer for anyone who wants a 996 with a great looking and performance package at a great price. It's really a steal. Good luck if you end up picking one up. Boxsterdoc: Well it looks like it's you and I left to pull the trigger. Let me know what you decide when you go back to the dealer and I will do the same. Good luck.

POST 128Original post

Hi, If it means anything, I've had mine 10 days and like everything about it. Rides and handles great. My wife even thinks "it's a much nicer car than the last one," which was an 02 C4S. Norm

POST 129Original post

Thanks Norm, it certainly means something especially if you have had an '02 C4S

POST 130 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great pics on the car thanks.....

POST 131Original post

If it means anything, I've had mine 10 days and like everything about it. Rides and handles great. My wife even thinks "it's a much nicer car than the last one," which was an 02 C4S. If you bought a Lexus LS 430, your wife would really think "it's a much nicer car than the last one," but you wouldn't be as happy.

POST 132Original post

Sly, You've sure got that right! What I was really getting at is that not only is the Ann. a super car to drive, but it has a great interior and actually rides much better than my C4S did. I've read a lot about how much better the C4S rides and just don't buy it. As far as handling, a strong case could be made either way. Norm

POST 133 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update......went to dealer and will give 16K discouint and no extras.....i countered with i want 22K with extras mats etc and they are goint to get back to me tomorrow.....hehehe i love to negotiate.....

POST 134Original post

Boxsterdoc, Several thoughts as you negotiate. If you really want the car, inform your saleman(woman) that the going discount nationally is $20K, use several of us as an example if you need to. Some cars already have color keyed mats on the sticker and you may not need to jawbone for that, its probably a mere $100 to them, if that. If youre like me with early meetings and rounds, it may be more advantageous to have them write into your purchase contract the use of a loaner car, free to you, whenever you bring it in for service. Oh, and dont be afraid of walking away, nicely but keep the relationship intact, if the deal isnt what you want. Leave the door open to a further offer at $20K. He/she has your number and will be calling you, trust me on this. Not many willing to plunk down this amount of $$$ in this economy with record surpluses of new vehicles on dealer lots. If you agree to take it before the end of the month, you save them some $$ as well. That's about as much win-win I would offer with a $20K discount. Good luck.

POST 135 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the advice and i am calling the dealer again tomorrow to see what their tune is,,,,,,will let you know what happens

POST 136 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update CS4/914-6....thanks again for the advice.....spoke to dealer again tonight and will give 19K but no other perks....he has had noother lookers for the car and he said 997 coming next month soon and wants to move the car...called me twice tonight......well after doing some online research and ebay checking and some calls I told him this to counter.....the 911 anniv is overstocked and non mover and overpriced to begin with this is why the manufacture gave a 10K rebate direct and in the history of porsche they do not do this until last year......a rent car going for 68K on ebay and generally 20K discount last month across the country.....so I countered to him it is now 25K off and consideration of other perks of free loaner for servicing, 3M clear bra, and protection package...into sales contract and I will talk tomorrow....so 96K car for 71 with perks or 68 without

POST 137Original post

$68k is a screaming deal! I enjoy following your negotiations. It seems like you have a good knack for it. The impending 997 is a great factor in your favor, as are the other facts you mention. Keep us posted!

POST 138 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all your great comments and will let you all know what happens

POST 139Original post

There's an Annibersary edition 911 on the lot at Valley Motors with an MSRP of $98K. Let's see GT3 or C2 for about the same MSRP. What was Porsche thinking?

POST 140 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some of these things will drive us crazy....thanks

POST 141Original post

The anniversary car is very very quick with a great suspension setup...I do not think the C2s will be quicker...BHP/ton is higher in the anniv. DonnyJ

POST 142 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Perry has a great point if the car does it for you get it and if not move on...

POST 143 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Question: How many of the total 911 anniv have been sold so far here in the states?????

POST 144Original post

I suppose one can get a gigantic Ziploc bag...
