I just had a seal replaced by the dealer, my first RSM issue. I called the dealer, took it in to confirm the problem, went back 3 weeks later to get it fixed.

Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

But, I plan to use the car on, maybe, four or five trips a year across Washington state, and I don't want to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere (or far from a dealer, given that there aren't east of the Cascades).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey, sorry for yet another RMS thread, but I'm still thinking about getting a 996. OK, I've decided, I can live with having to take the car into the shop every now and then. But, I plan to use the car on, maybe, four or five trips a year across Washington state, and I don't want to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere (or far from a dealer, given that there aren't east of the Cascades). So, my question: Does RMS ever fail abruptly? Can you go two, three hundred miles after you notice the leak without destroying the engine (or even just the clutch)? Could it leave me stranded? Thanks all.

POST 2Original post

small drips of oil won't leave you stranded. I'm not aware of massive oils leaks in this condition.

POST 3Original post

No. I just had a seal replaced by the dealer, my first RSM issue. I called the dealer, took it in to confirm the problem, went back 3 weeks later to get it fixed. However, the RMS caused me to refill oil once during this 3 weeks.

POST 4Original post

Almost all RMS leaks that have been reported are slow annoying leaks that make more of a mess over time on your garage floor than anything else. Everyone worries about oil getting on the clutch but I don't think it does. As these cars get older some will probably drive for years with the seal leaking with no more effect than small drips of oil following them around.

POST 5Original post

If you're concerned about the clutch, get a tip, like mine. I love the Tiptronic tranny - what a work of art. And to answer your question, everyone has told me the same - it's just annoying drips- nothing more.
