A couple days after owning it, I checked under the car for leaks, and I spotted what seemed to be a new oil leak.
Leading evidence: 'Check under the car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rms or did they just say' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check clutch' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I actually almost purchased that car a few months back from Steve but ran into a situation where I suddenly needed the money for family matters when I was ready to pull the trigger.

Suspected cause
Did they actually confrim that it was the RMS or did they just say that is what they are going to replace.

While they have the engine & tranny separated, have them check the clutch.

Suggestion
Hope you got a warranty or it will be a couple hundred bucks to have it replaced (have to remove the transmission).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I plan on taking it to a shop to get it fixed, but wanted to get some feedback first.
First, thanks to all the Rennlist members that helped me make my final decision. Thanks Edward for the advice to hold out. I picked this up a couple weeks ago, and finally had some time to post some photos.

Overall, I am extremely happy with the car. The interior and exterior are in flawless condition, and the car was very well maintained by the previous owner (also a Rennlist member...Thanks Ub). I even got all the maintenance receipts! I managed to get the exact color and options that I was shopping for.
A couple days after owning it, I checked under the car for leaks, and I spotted what seemed to be a new oil leak. At the time of purchase this was not present, and the guys that did the PPI even said there was not a single leak. I am assuming that this started a few days after ownership. My question is if this is the notorious RMS issue. I plan on taking it to a shop to get it fixed, but wanted to get some feedback first.

Please let me know if the last 3 photos make any sense. I can take additional photos at different angles.
Thanks again.
Beautiful car. Not sure on the oil leak. How much is on the pavement? Also, if you do not mind me asking, how much did you have to pay for the car? Just wanting to do some basic market research on current values of the different years. If you do not want to disclose that info, I would understand. Anyway, great looking car. Hopefully another Rennlister can help you with that leak. Welcome.
Congradulations on a beautiful car. I actually almost purchased that car a few months back from Steve but ran into a situation where I suddenly needed the money for family matters when I was ready to pull the trigger. Once I got back in the market I decided that I didn't want yet another white car.
I still kick myself over not picking that one up...no roof and sport seats is an enthusiests dream. Only thing it was missing for me was Litronics which is a simple upgrade. You've got a really fine car there, treat it well.
Andy
Very nice car, I always liked the white coupe. Not sure about the leak, I'm sure some of the guys with more knowledge than me will help you out in a bit.
Great looking car!
As for the leak, Yes it appears from your pictures that either the RMS or the intermediate shaft seal is leaking (you can't tell until you get the transmission housing off).
love the aerokit. Are you sure it is oil? I'm paranoid about leaks and would take it in to get it checked out. Might be minor but you never know. Congrats on beautiful ride.
Yep, you have an rear main seal failure and a fairly good one by the looks of it. Hope you got a warranty or it will be a couple hundred bucks to have it replaced (have to remove the transmission). It is a great looking car though. Aero with Sport Design wheels is a rare combo.
Hey all, Thanks for the info. I will be taking it in to a shop here in VA to have it taken care. I researched the RMS fix and it seems to cost around $800. I've already set aside some maintenance funds so this problem won't be here for long. Even with the leak, I have no regrets. I'll keep everyone posted.
screameleons,
Your car looks fantastic! I never liked white 911s in the past, but 996s (especially widebodies or aerokitted cars) have changed my mind. Now I want an aerokit
I work in Reston, so I will high-beam you if I ever see you
Justin
Finally got a quote for the Oil Leak. I was under the impression that RMS was an $800 fix. The independent shop quoted me $1400-$1500 to go ahead and replace the RMS and shaft seal. I will be taking it to IMA Motorsport in VA. Does this sound about right?
TIA.
Vince
14-1500 is WAY TOO HIGH to reaplce the RMS. Did they actually confrim that it was the RMS or did they just say that is what they are going to replace. By the way, $800 is what they should be charging you. Shop around.
Hi Dell,
When I called, I just said that I had an oil leak. They asked where it was coming from, and I explained that the feedback I received was that it was either RMS or the Intermediate Shaft Seal. The tech explained that they generally replace both since the parts had been updated. The total cost for parts alone was $275. The total cost would be $1400-$1500 depending on what type of oil I used. They have not seen the car yet, but I have scheduled an appointment on Monday. I will call around before then to see if there is a better rate. Is the $800 rate still true to replace both RMS and ISS?
Vince
Depending on what oil you use? What is the heck are they talking about. There is NO oil change in a seal replacement. And the parts? Did they give you an itemized breakdown? That is REDICULOUSLY high for what they are claiming. There are a love of local NOVA guys that should chime in for a great indy or a dealer they would rec'd. Start a new thread and ask specifically for NOVA or DC area guys rec'd for a good indy (or trusted dealer) so you can really get this done right without beign ripped off.
