The Function First kit is probably the best of the bunch on the market, and is better engineered than the Ben Auto Design SSK and bell crank (I've a friend who bought a BAD bell crank and it fouled the shifter housing when installed)

The Numeric isnt for everyone and most guys who drive their cars hard(me excluded) go for a 997 shifter and a Shift Right kit that replaces the plastic internals.

Yep, I meant it as much from it's all metal construction with regards to any increases in NVH perspective (especially when using Cup cables) as I did throw excessive reduction

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks, saw the new Porsche Classic magazine at Rennsport and there was a small mention of a new short shifter for 996 and 986. It's apparently designed (or blessed?) by Manthey racing and is distributed through Porsche Classic. Part number is PCG996424 and price seems to be in the $400-$500 range depending on the retailer.
Anyone had a chance to check one of these out yet? Was thinking of putting a 997 OEM shifter in my car but this could be a cool OEM+ type upgrade as well.
- consider this

there was a lot of discussion on this topic 2015 - 2016 as the 996 was gaining favor
it's perfect for street or track
add a weighted shift **** and you are
golden !
That is an interesting piece. The Numeric isnt for everyone and most guys who drive their cars hard(me excluded) go for a 997 shifter and a Shift Right kit that replaces the plastic internals. The shorter throw would be nice. I too have a weighted shiftknob and a 997 shifter.
Reviving this thread as I decide which shifter upgrade to go with on my 996TT.
Does anyone have any experience driving a vehicle with the Manthey short shifter? I've narrowed down my choices to either be the 997.2 GT3 assembly or the manthey short shifter.
From the image, that looks like JUST the shifter without the bushings and the bell crank that actually make shifting a poor experience you could get both, or get a Function First/Ben Designs short shifter with all the bits that actually fix the assembly.
Incorrect.
A: buy the Schnell shift kit, ~$175. It's more metal than what's shown here, and adjustable to take out almost all play.
B: after you install and adjust the shifter, watch this video and adjust your shift cables.

Pretty much nailed it there.
Regrettably the Manthey shifter that Porsche released as part of their Classic line isn't the complete "as engineered" item that Manthey released in the early 2000's.
I have an original Manthey SSK that I removed from my Manthey K400 engine conversion kitted Mk 1 996 GT3, it's a nicely engineered kit which removed the two main wear issues with any 996/997 shift assembly, the first being the lever pivot point in the main yoke, and the second being the plastic/nylon bushings the main yoke runs in. It removed the latter with the aid of a pair of precision machined alloy bearing housings that were substituted for the plastic/nylon OE bushes.
Alas the yoke bushes supplied in the Porsche Classic Manthey SSK are now the exact items used in all the 996/997 shifters (apart from the 997.2 GT3/RS/4.0L shifters, which have a aluminium housing, but which contain the same plastic/nylon bushes as every other 996/997 shifter)
The Classic Manthey SSK does however still provide a further decrease in lever travel over the 997 unit which gives a 11-15% reduction in travel over the stock OE 996 unit when used in a 996
But as you've rightly said, that still leaves the the bell crank lever along with it's plastic pivot pin, both of which are plastic injection moulded parts that have the usual mass production tolerances such parts are all too often subject to. The pin is clipped into the main plastic shifter housing, and is deliberately undersized to ensure it always fits into the bore in the bell crank lever (which is oversized)
The cable attachment boss at the base of the bell crank is frequently undersize, and the bore of the nylon bush in the cable end that fits over the boss is frequently oversized ... both components cause as much lost motion/freeplay as the standard shift lever and it's yoke.
The Schnell SSK is an exact copy of the original factory option 996 billet alloy SSK, which in turn was a B&M item (which spawned a million Chinese Ebay copies of the same thing)
I bought a used Mk1 996 GT3's that had a Schnell SSK fitted, it was the first thing I removed off the car ... They're fine if you're looking for massive (35%) reduction in throw, as are the Chinese copies and the original Porsche/B&M item. Personally it's not my thing, but each to their own.
The Function First kit is probably the best of the bunch on the market, and is better engineered than the Ben Auto Design SSK and bell crank (I've a friend who bought a BAD bell crank and it fouled the shifter housing when installed)
Most of the SSK's on the market retain some flaws, but as previously mentioned, the Function First kit is probably the best of them, especially if you find the Numeric too extreme.
Thanks for that overview! This has become an interesting discussion of shifters and available mods.
I hadnt seen Schnell before. Im still puzzling a bit over where this goes I have searched quite a bit but have found a photo with it installed:
https://schnellperformance.com/produ...ade-by-schnell
Under the base of the shifter? Like the ball end opposite the shift lever you grab onto?
Correct, it replaces the right hand (fore and aft) plastic cable end, which it is said can be prone to breakage. I've never experienced such a breakage, nor indeed known of anyone that has ...
It's a take on the 996/997 Cup end, but it adapts/clamps onto the stock shifter cable end, whereas the Cup items screw straight onto the end of the thicker Cup cables (which have threads) rather than ridged plastic ends of the standard road car cables.
Having watched the video about setting up/re-adjusting the cable ends, I'd say it's somewhat misleading. The plastic jig Porsche supply is for determining the correct lever position/starting point when the car is new, and all the components : Shifter mechanism, shift cables, engine/transmission mounts, gearbox components etc) are new.
Trial and error adjustment normally reaps better results than relying solely on the plastic set up jig.

especially if you find the Numeric too extreme.
What many miss about the Numeric is that it has 3 positions - the least extreme being less than a 10% reduction in throw (ie: not extreme at all).
Yep, I meant it as much from it's all metal construction with regards to any increases in NVH perspective (especially when using Cup cables) as I did throw excessive reduction
