Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is a bit off topic but I was looking at another vehicle to replace my Audi. It is a 2005 Jaguar X-type. I know absolutely nothing about these cars. My question is are they any good? easy to work on? Anyone own one before?

POST 2Original post

terrible reliability, i would never own one. plus the jag x-type is a ford taurus.... nuff said

POST 3Original post

I have a buddy who has been a Jag guy for years. They are wonderful cruisers - and the later models (built by Ford) are better engineered and built that the traditional Brits. The Big Jag sedan with Aluminium chassis is very expensive to repair so check your insurance carrier. This would be that same I assume on the late model A8. My view as an Audi owner... the Jag is a real Lux Cruiser. The comperable Audi is more of a drivers car in the same series / model size. Similar performance but a much different driving experience. Drive both and enjoy your choice.

I had a 2001 XJR with the 400 hp supercharged V8. Jaguars have a poor reputation and nothing depreciates faster than an English luxury vehicle, be it a Jag, Land Rover or Aston Martin. People seem to be scared to death of them. A good deal of that is due to the dealers poor after sales service and the prices they charge for repairs. Eg. A dealer quoted me $1800 for a single front brake caliper. I purchased a rebuilt one from Cardone for $160. I found it relatively easy to work on. Good CD based manuals are available on EBay. You should be able to pick up a 2005 for an obscenely low price. Do some research. Jag-lovers.com is a good forum.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, today I saw the prices and could not believe my eyes... about $12k for 2005 x-type with 60,000 mi . My allroad is on its last leg before the tranny goes out. I want to dump it before it costs me big bucks to fix. This car will be my wife's (temp driver) and I will drive it when the weather is bad enough for the 996. I glanced at Land Rover's too but I have no love for 12-15mpg. Ugh..

POST 6Original post

I've heard they have problems with the "IMS" bearing, whatever that is.

Didn't the old land rovers have little engines and were probably the greatest expedition vehicles ever? The land rover really seems ruined these days. I also heard the jags are lousy needing repair often.

POST 10Original post

The Jaguar X -type was one of the worst cars in production during it's production life. Absolute death traps and that was only when they were running. These cars were created soley for the brand wh*re to say, " I drive a jag".

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 8360202

X-type is not even a real Jag, Euro Ford Mondeo.. Too bad about the Allroad, How many miles? Ours has been rock solid. It's getting a timing belt today. My wife loves the Allroad, I offered her the Cayenne or a new Audi and she said no.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8360715

It has 110k. The Allroad has really been a great car. I am just looking for something for AWD and is comparable options wise to the Audi. I test drove a Volvo XC-90 the other day too. Also, I was not expecting all this negativity about Jag's. I thought they were supposed to be nice.

POST 14Original post

My CEO has among other things a brand new XK-R, It is NICE! but the S and X types, not so much.

POST 15Original post

Why not a mercedes E320 4matic for a station wagon? I think 04 to 06 are the bad years for Mercedes. I like the infinity G35/37X for an all wheel drive sedan. It will be on my radar when my 325XI calls it quits.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is slim pickings out here in Nebraska. So hard to find wagons that are nice.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As far a Jaguar parts, they really don't seem to be as expensive as Porsche parts. That's what most people I talk to complain about.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 8360110

I love the way the X-type drives as long as it is the 3.0 with sport suspension either manual or auto trans. AWD & stability control (VSC) work very well. I used to test drive new cars as my full time job & have logged many miles in 7-8 2002 X-types. It is basically a Ford Mondeo in Jag clothing converted from FWD to AWD with a PTO shaft from the front diff to the rear diff. This driveline provides excellant directional stability & quiet operation but I assume the added drag impacts fuel economy. The precise steering makes the car easy & fun to drive rain or shine. Much like the 996 but far less serious the X has some service issues but the engine is essentialy a Ford Taurus transplant formerly the #1 selling car in the US so it should be easy to work on if needed. I would get a PPI from a Jag dealer & enjoy the huge depreciation on this beautiful car that looks as good as any new Jag.

POST 20Original post

I couldn't own one, cause I don know wat to call it. JAG WIRE or JAG U ARRR Guess I'll have to stick with my PORSH

POST 21Original post

I have an 05 XJR that hasn't had a single issue with over 60k on it, but I agree with the others that the X type has a well earned bad reputation.

POST 22Original post

I'm surprised by all of the negative comments and experiences considering this car is essentially a Ford in everything but name. I don't recall hearing a lot of negative from the Ford equivalent?

You guys are funny. The only thing that attracted me to the Jag is the AWD and nice interior. That is all my wife cares about anyway.

Ouch...

POST 27Original post

I can't speak as an owner but I have done extensive drive with the late model XK, XK-R, XF and XF-R and I think they are fantastic car, the R version much so. the XF-R and supercharged are one of my all time favorites. The XK coupe can be had for very attractive prices. The drive is just plain rewarding, of course it is plush but for most commuting, I just love it. As for why I don't own one myself, I assume I am too scared as well. But I keep looking at them when they are on the lot. one of these days I might be getting one, right after checking the cost of aftermarket warranty on it!

Anything on the X-type?

POST 29Original post

x-type is no longer made by jaguar and was a product of Ford (re-badged Ford Mondeo). Indian Tata Group now owns jaguar and who knows what they will be doing to support spare parts for this vehicle. Bottom line: stay away; it's cheap for a reason. And please don't let Land Rover/Ranger Rover cross your mind either. If you want something European stick with a BMW or Merc. There are many independent shops... very few for jags. As for me, my commuters are always Japanese since I put a lot of miles on them.

POST 30Original post

first of all its Jag.. Second of all it FORD... Jag has always been know for its issues. Ford has always been known for its horrid customer service. I would think the marriage is a huge azz f**cking waiting to happen for the owner.
