Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
The manual shows that the first check is the 30A fuse (D6), then check blower resistor, trouble shoot electrical harness and finally blower motor (check).
Leading evidence: 'Check fuses and they are good' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check )' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Had it replaced for stiff activation once or twice before.

(famous last words) check the fan is able to spin - it's not hard to remove and feel around for debris.

How much effort to replace the fan if that is what has failed?
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The $5 part I am referring to came from NAPA, was made in China, and fixed the issue.
For whatever reason my fan for the AC/Heater/Ventilation stopped working.
The control panel bar graph still works, but no air is blowing.
Also, the AC symbol will not turn on when you press the AC button or hit AUTO.
I have checked all the fuses and they are good.
Any ideas on the cause of the failure?
How much effort to replace the fan if that is what has failed?
Thanks!

Mine did the same thing a few years ago. Removal of the fan blower is pretty straighforward; I think there is a DIY on renntech.org. Mine was foreign debris in the motor, so I clean it and it began working again. It's been fine ever since.
Good luck!
The ignition switch is most likely your problem. Is the key hard to insert/remove? Is it hard to trunt he key sometimes? if so, that is your issue.
You can buy the 5 dollar part from Napa (it's an Audi part #) and follow the instructions on Renntech on how to replace. A bit hard to get to but that may fix your problem. My car acted the same as yours when the ignition switch took a dive.
Thanks, yes, the key does have an issue from time to time. Had it replaced for stiff activation once or twice before.
Is the replacement part the same as the old one? That is, will it fail as well and is there a better solution?
Considering that the heating/AC is an integrated system I would speculate that the power resistor could affect both systems.
The manual shows that the first check is the 30A fuse (D6), then check blower resistor, trouble shoot electrical harness and finally blower motor (check).
The cheap/easy check is the resistor. It's also not unheard of that the display controller can have a fault.
I've included a link above in my post. Did you click on it?
Without a schematic, I can't say for sure if the resistor is tied in to the AC light or not.
All electronic pieces fail eventually. Did you have the entire ignition mechanism replaced or just the switch that goes on the back end of the main housing?
The $5 part I am referring to came from NAPA, was made in China, and fixed the issue. I have replaced the headlight switch (factory Porsche part) and the driver door lock switch (factory porsche part) as well as the ignition switch. Things just start to go bad after a decade I guess. Now the pass door lock switch is taking a dive. It is what it is I guess.
Yes, thank you for the link.
I am unclear where the fan is accessed. Is it from inside the interior of the car or from the trunk?
The last post to that link gives me the details, but now I need the big picture.
The ac/heater is up under the dash in the passenger side. Unscrew upper trim panel (plastic screws). Remove the plastic air duct (snap fit). This is where a couple of good flash lights and a pillow for your neck come in handy! The resistor is above and to the left slightly and is red in color and is attached with one screw and a wiring connection jack. The unit slides down towards you after you remove the screw. There are lot's of these ballast resistors on ebay. Resist!! Buy the OEM part instead. While your there... (famous last words) check the fan is able to spin - it's not hard to remove and feel around for debris. I had little bits of old foam sealer or gasket inside mine.
FYI: If you know someone with an OB2 cable and durametric software - the 7.8ver that covers 2004 996's covers heating and AC operation and codes...
If these replacement pare are Audi then I'm willing to bet that they are the same as the ones found in a Golf or a Jetta. The diagram in the link surenlooks like the blower motor setup in my 2000 Jetta.
