Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Whining noise in 3rd and 4th gear. Sounds like straight cut gears just not as loud. Transmission shifts smoothly, no grinding. Previous owner told me he replaced the oem gear oil with motul 300 right before he sold me the car. I have put less than 2k miles on the car. I have read motul 300 can cause g-box noises but also know these transmissions in the 99-02s are notorious for pinion bearing noise/failure. Is it even worth changing the gear oil? I have read that some just deal with the noise until they can afford a full rebuild.
