The other possibility is that the car wasn't really fully inspected 3 months ago as claimed.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

34 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Bad day: Water pump, RMS, Leaking Front Differential - 3 months out from end of CPO warranty, 36K miles...

POST 2Original post

Don't know how well you know your local dealership, but you maybe be able to get them to split the bill since it is so close to the warranty end. I often hear stories like this from BMW owners.

POST 3Original post

If you are close and under the miles you might have a chance. Also if you have always had the car serviced by the dealership, that goes a long way. But in the end it is really up to the service manager since he is the one that has to talk to the Porsche NA representative and convince them to authorize the repair.

POST 4Original post

But at least your Pcar didn't cost you as much today as the market cost you today! Or yesterday. Or the day before...

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5879860

Yes, I'm going to speak with them about it. What makes the whole thing worse is that 1 week before the warranty was up, I took the car in and told them to go over it completely - nothing found...

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 5880121

Will work for Beer!! A co-worker a few levels up brought me a 6 pack of Sam Adams for helping his project out last week... I could have kissed him !!! Ok well, maybe not, but you know.....

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Porsche won't do anything for me - I won't buy another one.

POST 11Original post

What year car is your 996? With only 36K miles?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5882546

2002, 36K miles.

POST 13Original post

So what was the bill then? Maybe 2K? So the blanket statement of "I'll never buy another one" is based on this? Making decisions based on emotion just isn't the way to go. Sure, you're probably upset but how far out are they supposed to honor a warranty and then a subsequent CPO warranty? The car is 7 years old, things go bad. The leaks are usually from not driving them much (low miles). Water pumps go bad. Mine went bad a few months after warranty and I paid to have it replaced.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5882803

Yep 3K+. The car is driven 20 miles every day - it doesn't sit. If it had been a single item, I could understand it. But, a cluster of these failures on a 100K car with 36K miles just isn't right. The other possibility is that the car wasn't really fully inspected 3 months ago as claimed. Either way, it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

POST 15Original post

Sorry, but your are not thinking rationally at all. 100K car? It's nowhere close to that and nowhere close to what you paid for it. It's a 35K car at best and 7 years old. When it was new, maybe 85K and under warranty. You expect a car to be perfect and never have a consumable be consumed? Pumps fail over time and seals need replacement over time. It happens. Would it leave the same taste in your mouth if it happened while under warranty or CPO? If it wouldn't then we have figured out the root of the problem.....you don't want to maintain a car that is going to need to be maintained. It sounds like you need to lease then.

POST 16Original post

With a car that age, things will start failing in groups. I took my car for some repairs (AC/Sunroof, etc) as i was driving no more than 50 feet from the dealer, the alternator died, went back to take care of the alternator, got the car and 2 days later RMS. Yes, I know your pain but mileage means nothing to a hose/connector/electric components that are 7 years old. Trade-in for a new car or buy an extended warranty. that will be the best $3000 you will spend in your life.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5882895

For your information, the car stickered for $96,XXX dollars and is 6 years, 3 months old. If the same had occurred while under warranty, I would have questions about the reliability as well. And yes, I expect more from a vehicle that is priced that high.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5882919

Sorry to hear that this has happened to others too. I will be changing vehicles.

POST 19Original post

Then you fail to understand what you are buying. Go get a Camry if you want near perfect reliability and obscenely low maintenance costs. But guess what? Water pumps fail on Camry's as well. 96K for a coupe? Talk about over-optioned. That's almost 20K in bling. You have an 78K (new) car that has wear and tear items that need replaced. You bought it used and have NO IDEA how it was treated a priori. Items wear out over time and need replaced. That's it. How long have you had it? What did you pay for it? My guess is you have had it 2 years and paid low 40's for it. So, you statement should be based off of that. I don't look at my CAB that I actually did pay close to 100K for many years ago as a 100K car.......I look at it as a 7 year old CAB that has 7 years of wear and tear on parts. And when something does go bad, I fix it. Obviously the marque doesn't affect you the way it does others. You must just look at it as a car and not a Porsche since you want perfect reliability. If this is all you have to pony up for you have a twisted idea of reliability. Those parts are RELIABLE and you have come to the end of the their reliable life. Go replace them. Just curious....what is it you will be changing to?

POST 20Original post

oh and BTW, I love my car!!!!!!! I just did this over the weekend:

POST 21Original post

Wow! Very nice The black and yellow look great together!!!

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5882989

You wouldn't be able to make much of a living as a mind reader... I never said it was a coupe - it is a C4 Cab, I've had it for 4 and a half years, and I do have some idea of how it was treated before I purchased it with 4k miles on it. Not sure what I might look at for the replacement, but I've got some time to figure that out.

POST 23Original post

Get a 997!!! My car is speed yellow and I like the speed yellow bits on my interior and exterior!

POST 24Original post

Mind reader? Not even close No, just going with all that was presented and just went for the lowest common denominator. Anyway, how do you know how it was treated before you? Were you riding shotgun for all 4K miles? Forget pricing and forget how much these cars cost to fix at times. The point is that you have lost sight on a few things. Are you pissed when your brake pads wear down and need replacement? Are you mad when the air filter gets dirty and needed replacement? Are you mad when the spark plugs need replacement? See the trend? Consumables that wear with age and need replacement. I still fail to understand why you are so mad that you have to spend 3K to replace worn parts that will come with a 2yr warranty. I guess whatever you choose to replace it will have no parts that wear down?

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 5883143

you are forgetting that he is done with Porsche. I'd hate to see what would have happened had he tried to push it much longer and have his motor blow since we all know these cars can't go to 100K miles.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 5882965

this logic = If I buy a plane and spend 7+ figures, it should never crash?

POST 27Original post

Wasn't there a published report recently that ranked Porsche as one of the most reliable cars? And that was based on number of repairs per model year or something like that? Think about....who brings cars in for more ticky tack **** than entitled 100K car owners? That is saying something now isn't it? To be that reliable and still have to fix all the small crap means that these suckers are pretty darn good. I have owned 4 now over the last 8 years and not a single one has made me think that I need to move to another marque. If anything, these damn cars are like meth........

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5883158

I wouldn't be pissed unless the brake pads only lasted 5K miles under normal driving conditions. I've replaced both the brake pads and the spark plugs on the car with no angst at all.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5883203

I believe that was the J.D. Powers initial quality survey which tracks defects per vehicle in the first 90 days only.

POST 30Original post

So how long do you expect a water pump to last? Mine lasted a little over 6 or 7 years and I didn't complain about it when I had to pay for it. Still not sure why you are so pissed about it. And what exactly is "normal" driving? You don't want to see my definition of normal

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 5883264

Nope, that wasn't it. It was one based on model year reliability not initial customer satisfaction over 90 days.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 5883268

I would expect for all three of these items: water pump, rms, differential seals, that the expected lifetime would be at least 60K miles. When I first took the car in due to noise, they told me it was probably the water pump. I wasn't upset about that single item going out since I understand that things can break randomly, but when they called back and said pump, and RMS, and differential, and hood struts, I was pissed.

POST 34Original post

Most important thing here to me is that you shouldn't let the dealer do repairs out of warranty. That's just plain foolish in my opinion. Get a good independent and I'll bet the bill is close to half what you'd pay at the dealer. I'll bet you wouldn't be as pissed if it were only $1600 for all of that work.
