on a serious note, it is truely getting rediculous, but it only happens to me in my M3, some kids or even adults in 100 horsepower econoboxes think they are driving a racecar because they put some stickers on it and changed the air filter.

I have far more run-ins with e55's/S55's and m3's/m5's than rice burners...

Sadly, I've yet to run with a 996 that wants to go for a "spirited drive"...
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What the hell is going on in todays highway? Why is it that everyone thinks he/she has a F-ing race car and theres race to get to the next traffic light, or traffic jam that I am not aware of. I leave my house in Randolph NJ each day at 5:30am and believe it or not there are people on the roads driving like F-ing jerks, endangering everyone on the roads with there stupidity and careless driving. The worse lately are the women in the 5000lbs trucks on the cell phone and applying make, while she is tail gating the hell out of me. I have completely given up on driving faster because of the risk of getting a ticket (Many State Troopers are using Laser Now) its just not worth it. If it wasnt for my early morning drives on Sundays I would sell my Targa and but a dam Tank. Every boy who watched the fast and furious thinks there Honda with a bolt on exhaust can out run and handle a 996, daily I have one or two tail gating me to race hello *** wipe it wouldnt be a race, I would step on it and watch the dumb look on your face from my rearview mirror. Sorry to vent my brothers, sometimes I feel if I dont I will go POSTAL!
Do any of you experience this in your neck of the woods?
I'm surprised there aren't more accidents in the NJ/NY metro area. On RT78 I get passed left and right by minivans going 80-85 or more. The NJ turnpike is like a racetrack. I have a hard time finding a road to take for a pleasant drive. Every road I've been on in this area seems to be getting more dangerous. Unfortunately, I don't see it getting any better. Also sharing my frustration.
In Florida I get the new Mustang GTs, Camaros and Firebirds. Kids are about 19 to 24 and real buttholes.
They would race you in a 35 mph zone right in front of the local police station, thats how bad it is.
Hollywood hasnt helped this situation. In the movies the rice burners and hot cars usually elude the police but in real life its a totally different story.

down where I am, I don't think most people know what a Porsche is - in six month of having my 996 I've only had 1 car (a Nissan Altima
) try it on.
I had one guy from michigan comment he liked my car - then asked what make it was.
Quite refreshing in some ways, when I had my boxster in the UK, it would be a bit embarassing driving in the summer with the top down as people would look and stare.
I have the most problems in DC with middle-aged balding white men driving volvos. They glare, and then they try to cut me off or stay in front of me at all costs. Very strange. My theory is that they were forced (either by spouse, DC style social pressure or by personal conviction) to buy a safe and sensible Volvo but they would much rather be in a Porsche. Plus I am too young with too much hair to have a 911. It makes me want to hit seat memory position #2 (otherwise known as the "pimped out" lay back position" -- as opposed to memory position #1 which is proper driving position) roll down my window and crank up some Rap on the Bose ("Ya got girl problems I feel bad for ya son. I got 99 problems but a b*tch ain't one"). Bah Humbug
Come on down to Tennessee, boys.....we have the Natchez Trace Parkway (beautiful, no signs, no lights, just beautiful scenery), the Cherehola Skyway (more beautiful yet, with altitude), the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the twistiest roads ever in the Smokies.
and those southern girls, with the way they talk, etc etc
"I wish they all could be California girls"....
But my favorite I must admit is by Luda: and it goes a little something like this: Move B_tch, get out the way----- I do 100 on the hwy so if you do the speed limit get the fu__ outa my way
Within the last three weeks here in the St. Louis Area:
3 weeks ago - 2 dead teenagers (street racing)
2 weeks ago - 1 dead teen and 1 in critical condition (street racing)
1 week ago - another dead teen (street racing)
Missouri no longer has publically funded Driver's Education programs in the high schools. Apparently it has been like this for some time.
I have lived in 8 different states in this country. Missouri has the laziest drivers above all. I am apalled by the actions of these adults. Now here's the sad part. They are teaching the youth how to drive!!! So, in essence...we have generations of bad driver's in MO. Grrrreeeaaat.
Sad, sad, sad...that is all.

didn't you get the memo? all highways in the tri state area are now officially dragstrips for 20 year olds in sub 20k cars.

in my 996 GT3 people are (VERY surprisingly) civil and kind, often moving over or going out of their way to give me space to merge.
bizzare.
in my M3 i would get Jetta's always wanting to go for it. i think most of them just thought it was a 3 series?
haven't had the C4S long, but to date, people in this small town just look at the car.
in North America auto's are a leading cause of death, yet we treat them with little to no regard. i still remember my wife yelling at me around the time of our first child: she complained i spent more time reading the manual of our new car than i had spent on baby books. i suggested the kids greatest risk was from a car accident and that it would be better if she followed my lead rather than trying to figure out the stereo at 80km per hour. The conversation ended!
Fortunately I live and work in the country, so I rarely encounter the type of driving that you guys see. Recently however I have had the need to make some regular trips into the city, and it amazes me that there aren't a lot more accidents. Tail gaiting, weaving between lanes, driver inattention, etc seem to be the norm rather than the exception in the city.
Driving in the country is heaven by comparison. As a matter of fact in the last couple of years I can think of only one incident. I passed a guy who came out of his driveway and cut in front of me instead of waiting until I passed by. I was going around 35 MPH and had to hit my brakes in order not to hit him. The speed limit on the road is 25 MPH and there is no passing zones on the road but the guy was going around 15 MPH and so I decided to pass him.
The guy was driving a Honda Civic and apparently he took my pass as a personal insult because he attempted to tail gate me for about two miles until we came to a stop sign at which point he honked his horn at me and then gave me the finger. The guy looked to be in his early 40s and he was obviously enraged because he was passed by a Porsche. It's amazing how enraged some men get when passed by a car, especially if that car is a Porsche. Interestingly enough women seem to have no problem being passed.
Any psychologists out there? This would make for an interesting case study.
Its an epidemic infecting the country. I live on the east side of Seattle and people drive BELOW the speed limit in ALL lanes. The entire state is like this. The left lane is not for passing it is for cruising. Of all the states I have lived in this is by far the one with the slowest drivers. They are by far the most curtious to let you in a line or make a turn. Atlanta, Houston and L.A. are the fastest.
It seems where I live, i.e., the Portland Metro Area, that ricers like to think that with their flipper and exhausts they are hotter than vettes, BMW's and P/cars. They see my car and they are on it like flies on stink. In fact, I have pulled over several times just to get them off my ***.
The next most irritating drivers are these fat mamas taking their fat little kids to school in 6 ton SUV's like S2's, Lincolns and these ugly big Ford whatevers. The only thing these vehicles are good for are to move their tripple XL fat asses around town. I can't wait till gas hits 4.00 a gallon...no other driver deserves to pay the price like they do -- IMHO.
I love those ugly big Ford whatevers, and have had 2 of them....they served a great purpose as I had a band w/instruments, and while diesel was reasonable, it was a great alternative (I assume you're talking about Excursions), and every once in a while, I'd get flipped off by, I assume, people with your opinion......and I thought this was America, the land of free choice. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think that we should be taking the excessive amount of money we spend on PCars, and donate it to charity, and drive a Honda.....they're not right either!!!!!
I thought for awhile that it might be me imagining that all these drivers on the road are really that bad. I live in Raleigh, n. c. And let me tell you, there isn't a day that goes by with less than 6 collisions on the freeway, mostly from female drivers in some sort of hurry, on the cell phone, not even aware that anyone else is on the road. Every time I'm in my car I can't drive more than 2 miles without having some idiot try to race me. Usually in some sort of played out used redneck beater. I have always taken pride in what I am able to afford and have always given respect to others who I share the road with, but sometimes i don't even want to go anywhere. These people are ruining my freedom. I also ride motorcycles and on several occasions have stopped dead in the middle of the road, gotten off my bike, and scared the living crap out of the F $^%$# *** hole on my butt.
Be that as it may, the cars I drive don't consume needless amounts of fuel nor do they cause an unnecessary hazard to others because of their inherent design flaws and limitations. You're right. You certainly have the freedom to choose what type of vehicle you drive. Along with that freedom is an important responsibility to others, and the planet we live on...
If you do any tracking you get 6-9 miles to the gallon. You are pissing away gas that that fat lady could use to take her kids to the cancer doctor. Maybe her kid is in an iron lung... who gives a f989k why someone makes the choice they do.
I get exactly the same thing out here in my GT3. People sleeping in the left lane often move over to let me go by. I think it's because the car looks lower & more aggressive than your average sports car...plus I'm usually carrying some speed.
It's been a pleasant surprise.
I get the same sort of "respect" that others have talked about. A lot thumbs-ups, etc. when I'm tooling around H-town.
I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed that no one has tried to take on my car but I can see that it'd be a pain in the *** if it happened all the time.
Just as I was leaving the house on Saturday noon I was relaying the story of this thread to a friend visiting from NorCal for the weekend. As she was laughing about the scenario of "everyone wants to race you" while we were sitting at the signal light along side a "turn of the century" Cadillac DeVille - the light turns green and I make a slightly aggressive (emphasis on slight) start in first gear and the toad in the Caddy feels like the "race is on". We pulled up along side him at the next red light doubled over in side splitting laughter. He was not happy. We couldn't stop laughing. The timing of the whole event was fantastic.
There's a stretch of Interstate just outside of Oceanside, CA that passes 20 miles through Camp Pendelton (Marine Base) that's notorious for speeding. I think I'm the slowest vehicle on the road on that stretch at 75-80MPH. I have been pased several times by highway patrol while steady at 75. I'm behaving quite well at that speed for the stretch - they would rather get one of the MANY cars doing close to 100.
Thats funny sh*t TC because Im around your way and I get the same stare from people on the road. You have to admit that it makes you laugh though.
Theres been some serious accidents where kids are street racing with their Japanese and American muscle cars around DC/MD/NOVA lately. Some even end up costing their lives or the passengers lives too. I just try to stay calm and drive sensible when Im faced with a street racer nowadays but I was guilty of street racing in my younger days with the 964.
It amazes me too how driving a P-car can cause people in all kinds of sh*tboxes to try to impress you with the way their cars accelerate and handle. Typically it will be some beat-to-death Honda with an exhaust pipe you could stuff a basketball into, and kid with his hat on backwards, and the windows vibrating from the thumping stereo...agree that it's not worth the effort/risk to engage.
I live in NYC and run into ricers occasionally. They definitely do get up right behind me, but do not provoke a race (usually). I do, however, find the AMGs and ///Ms always trying to play. I have far more run-ins with e55's/S55's and m3's/m5's than rice burners... Of course this usually happens just outisde the city, it's too dangerous to even accelerate in the city
generally though, most people do move out of the way..
Sadly, I've yet to run with a 996 that wants to go for a "spirited drive"...
I'd love to know who made you the judge about what qualifies as resonsible or irresponsible to others.....FYI, I had a Powerstroke Diesel Excursion which got 18 mpg, which is not too far behind what I seem to be getting out of the Porsche. In addition, the very nature of the thread that's going on here is complaining about dangerous driving by sportscars.....I don't know any Excursions that are blasting down city streets at reckless driving speeds.....if you're such a purist about ecology, why did you pick a car that goes through as many tires as this one does....and rubber ain't exactly an ecological masterpiece ...it's amazing how some people can only point at others, but when it comes to their choices, they do as they please......as for any responses, save it.....you obviously like to argue, and I'm finished with this one!!!!
You guys are all very lucky that they try to race you at stoplights, lane by lane. Come to Houston and experience the wonderful world of people who try to move from left to right and backwards during rush hour at 90 MPH, while the rest is creeping at 40 MPH. That racing is not the even the worst part. Nowaways some people stop in the middle of the highway to pick something up, which felt out of their open pickup or just stop, because their phone or coffee felt on the floor. No signals, signs, indication or whatsoever. Just stop.
In order to accomodate this all, they are building a 16 lane highway, so you can stop at your own lane and / or can move more sideways...............
I had some dork in a what appeared to be brand new convertible SL try to bait me on "M Street" in the middle of downtown DC. Although you can pick up some speed if you hit the lights right, it is right in the middle of downtown with all of the taxi/tourist/taxcollector(police) hazzards all around. He even went so far as to cut me off and then manually raise and lower his rollbar
I couldn't believe it. As far as I know, that was the closest approximation to "peacock" behavior that I have ever seen in a car. (I have to admit that I also hate it when P-car owners put up their spoilers manually just to show off
) I did what I always do in that situation: I completely ignored him. I have to admit that it was hard not to point and say "BWWWAAAAAHHHH you are such a loser" when he stopped next to me at a light (he had his top down and I had my top back (Targa) and windows down). I could have an SL if I wanted one, but why would I want one?
One evening I was driving back to Nashville from Atlanta throough the mountains near Chatanooga, horrible rain, crap visibility. I was doing a very moderate 55-60 MPH.
I realised there was a 'tricked-out' (if there is such a thing) F150 right on my ***. some redneck wanted to show detroit iron superiority...
anyway, I didn't do anything but cruise along, which seemed to enrage him... he overtook me, driving in a manner which looked suicidal given the vechicle he was driving.
a mile along the road he aquaplaned and wobbled off the interstate onto the median as he obviously met the handling limits of his truck - it was shocking to me as it look as though he was about to end his life.
he managed to get back on the road thankfully, and funnily enough drove at a pace more in tune with what the weather conditions warrented
I can't believe how some people feel completely invincible when they are driving their tanks outside the envelope of safety
someone derided my car on another non-car forum (the topic was what car you owned), labelling Porsche drivers as 'boy-racers' and bald dentists.... and then informed me they fell apart when hit by big SUVs (she owned an expedition and an XK8)
someone out there is giving us a bad rep
I need to see that - only problem is I may crash from laughing too much
there are some right idiots out there
a colleaugue told me that the local metro council is looking to build a roundabout on the main road near me - thats going to be amusing
half the cracked-out crazies can barely negotiate a four-way stop or Taco Bell drive through - how the hell will they deal with a roundabout?
I have had my C4 cab for a few months. I had one similar experience that was funny. I was getting gas when the guy at the next pump came up and looked at my car. He asked me if I wanted to race. I thought he was kidding. He was about my age (40's). I looked over at his car (a Dodge Magnum) and he then stated that the only car he hadn't raced was a porsche. I told ho no thanks, paid for my gas and drove off. On the way out of the station, I noticed the tag on his car. I turned and looked at my son, and with a big smile on my face said "He's got a hemi!" We laughed all the way home.
