The reason is because the turbo nose flows better than the standard Carrer nose, and, that the turbo radiators are installed on the intakes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is the normal engine temp for a 996? where does your temp needle hang at when you are driving normal on the street?

POST 2Original post

Mine mostly bisects the 8 in 180 but if in stop and go traffic it'll get up to the right of the 0 in 180.

POST 4Original post

Actual engine temp shoud be 194 - 203. For most 996's 190 degrees is with the needle just about touching the left side of the "0" in 180. Needle will vary from car to car, Hook up your scanner and look at the actual temperature and how it relates to YOUR needle and gauge.

POST 5Original post

Get the 3rd (center) radiator and you'll never have to worry about it again.

POST 6Original post

My car has the 3rd center radiator, as is equipped with the X51 power package, and it pretty much stays by the "0" of the 180 or just slightly to the right of it...

POST 7Original post

Sorry for the question in the 996 area, but do you know the reason why the 997 is sitting steady at 175 F, so 10 to 20 F below the 996? I have to admit that the weather in Houston is still on the "cold" side (< 85 F), so maybe in the next month, when the outside temperature starts to climb into the 90's the coolant needle will creep up too. During some harder driving I had the oil temperature raising from steady 210 F to 230 F, but the coolant temperature was staying at 175 F. Maybe I should drive a bit harder.......

POST 8Original post

Mine sits pretty steady towards the right side of the 180 mark. I have to admit though, it moves around (not far) more than other cars i've owned. Stop and go traffic on a hot day will see a slight rise in temp where other cars i've owned would sit still at a constant temperature.

POST 9Original post

Regarding my previous post, today I realized I meant to say, the needle bisects the "8" of the 180, and sitting in traffic may bisect the "0" at most. It never goes right of the "0" in 180.

POST 10Original post

Both my 996's the temp rarely moved to the right of the 8 in 180.

POST 11Original post

hmmm, mine is to the right of the 8 all the time when she warms up, and two weeks ago in hot weather, it passed the 0 completely. Actually started to concern me a bit.... almost a full "0" number past...

POST 12Original post

I realize that the statement I made isn't very clear. By "right side of the 180 mark" I meant between the 8 and the 0 (i.e. not centered but a little to the right side). Have seen it to the right of the 0 before but not by much.

POST 13Original post

Sitting still in traffic just pushes that gauge.....! Normal driving is in the middle of the "8" and the "0" in 180 for me... -Eli

POST 14Original post

Same as Eli for me in between the 8 and the 0 when driving, sitting in traffic may go up a little past the 0

POST 15Original post

Yesterday while in the 15 minute or less drive thru at IN & OUT it went a bit higher..... "It's starting to get hot around here!" -Eil

POST 16Original post

Fast40th: I was informed and also read that the 40th anniversary cars do not have the third center radiator. The reason is because the turbo nose flows better than the standard Carrer nose, and, that the turbo radiators are installed on the intakes. Hence, with better flow and bigger radiators in the front there was no need to install the third radiator. Normally, if one does order the X51 package from the factory you would get a normal Carrera nose and you would get the third radiator. Think of this as an opportunity to upgrade to track and hot weather trim by adding the third radiator, i.e. you have capacity available for the future to enhance cooling. POST 17Original post

Just pull off the bumper cover and by-pass one radiator..... -Eli

POST 18Original post

Hmmm... looks like I'll be checking under the hood and through the front bumper and see what I find. Doesn't the C4S have a 3rd radiator and uses the same nose? I'm curious now! Anyone wants to bet?

POST 19Original post

I've read that some manufacturers now rig the gauge so that it won't move for small (normal) fluctuations and only moves if you're really starting to have a problem. It's designed to keep the customer complaints/inquiries down. I'm sure that's what they did to my M3. The temp gauge is always perfectly in the middle, even in stop & go traffic with triple digit temps outside and the a/c on. No way that thing is accurate.

POST 20Original post

Based on the gauge, you are running the proper water temp. The only way you can make sure is to look at the actual reading of the temp sensor with your scanner. Identify whwhere you needle is at different temps. 210 degrees in hot weather and traffic is normal. I only have 2 radiators and have no problems in Florida, Texas or Vegas. As soon as you get moving, the temp should fall back below 200.

POST 21Original post

We'll Rennlist did it again... amazing what you learn everyday. Looks like Marc (95M3CSL) is certainly right! The 40th Anniversary editions do not have a 3rd radiator, even though they have the X51 package. I just checked and amongst the carnage of dead bugs and leaves, I couldn't find the infamous 3rd radiator. Thanks Marc. Appreciate the feedback!

POST 22Original post

No worries. Glad to help. I was as surprised as you were. However, I look at it as an opportunity (to spend $$ of course) and gives me a way to add more cooling capacity if needed. But, per the others on rennlist thus far, driving in SoCal or Mojave desert summer temps is not going to be a worry. Regards, Marc LA

POST 23Original post

It seems to me that having the A/C off runs the engine hotter. I notice the temps in the middle of the 0 with it off, and in the middle of the 8 with it on. Has anybody else notcied this phenomenon?

POST 24Original post

You are right. When in traffic you have no airflow through the radiators. Turning the air on kicks the fans on full speed and the temp drops immediately. You may run as much as 10 degrees F hotter in the summer if the air is not on and you are in bumper to bumper traffic.

POST 25Original post

According to my dealer, it is perfectly normal to have the guage go a little to the right of the "0".

POST 26Original post

My temp gage stays mostly between the 8 and the 0 in the 180 indicator.
