It's no cake walk, as far as plug changes go; but it is an infrequent PIA nonetheless.

Changing plugs on a 944 Turbo is a 4 with the 996 being an 8 on a scale of 1-10, IMHO.

Suggestion

I found the best way was to use a spark plug socket and a normal extension then use another extension of the same size and put it on after the other is inserted which comes right to the oustide of the hole- then it was just a time issue and not rushing so you don't cut your hands.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just did Irium IK 20s. The two most rear cylinders made me wish I had Fabspeed muffler bypass pipes. Could be placebo, but the Carrera pulls a little nicer in the high revs than with the 25K old 4 prong Berus I pulled out of there.

POST 2Original post

I guess you could have take the mufflers off when you change plugs. It is not that difficult to do.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

True, but I was playing German mechanic which means finding the secret angle of attack with specialty tools (U-Joint) and hitting spot on torque loads for the bolts. I think those mufflers are coming off anyway. Just did the half tank of 100 octane with 91 craptane mix and after about 30 miles; SHE'S ALIVE! The mod bug has officially kicked in.

POST 4Original post

I thought plugs are easy to change on NA and they are due at 60k for 02+ years.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Time to pay back the neighbors for there kid that plays snare drum in the school band.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Take a look at the rear cylinder accessibility. It's no cake walk, as far as plug changes go; but it is an infrequent PIA nonetheless. Changing them at 30K is a marked improvement in idle and throttle reponse, but don't know if that is purely iridium superiority firing through, or if the plugs were ready for a freshening anyway.

POST 8Original post

ya, it is a PITA! i wish i had removed my headers when i did mine. it would have saved me an hour per side. i guess i can't complain cause i have skinny wrists so finding the perfect angle of attack was relatively easy mod bug just kicked in? what too you so long?!?!

POST 9Original post

I didn't feel it was difficult if you took your time and followed Loren's DIY. I found the best way was to use a spark plug socket and a normal extension then use another extension of the same size and put it on after the other is inserted which comes right to the oustide of the hole- then it was just a time issue and not rushing so you don't cut your hands. The rear ones simply come out by turning them out the right way towards the rear.

POST 10Original post

Changing plugs should not be that big a deal. It takes no longer than an hour and a half from start to finish and requires no removal of anything other than the heat shields. Just use a shorter extension on the back plugs after breaking them free.

POST 11Original post

You think it sucks on a 996....try it on a 993 (two plugs per cylinder that require all kinds of crap disassembled to get to).

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess it is all relative. Changing plugs on a 944 Turbo is a 4 with the 996 being an 8 on a scale of 1-10, IMHO. Well worth it, though.
