Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I expect that when I turn the key to the off position (from running), it should be immediately quiet stop.

Are we talking about a "running on" condition here?

One thing to try is to run the tank empty, and fill up with Sunoco 94, or whatever highest octane fuel you can get.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Timing issue?
Unfortunately, my 2002 996 did that 4 years ago. One day I started it and the intermediate shaft broke... replacement engine under warranty. Price to Porsche was $22k I was told.
Timing was my first thought as well. The car runs great, doesn't leak(not yet away, knocks on wood) and has been serviced by the same dealer since new.
I have the complete printed service history from day 1 and the RMS/IMS replacement has not been done.
Since it is CPO'd does it make sense to take it in for good measure? The previous owner (i am the 3rd owner) had it for 5 months and added 2,000 miles to the car from when he bought it from a local Porsche dealer.
I appreciate any insight.

Are we talking about a "running on" condition here? Does it happen when the the engine is very hot, but not if you shut it off before it is fully warmed up?
In the old days, this could be caused by incorrect ignition timing. This is likely not the case with your car.
Are you certain about the fuel quality? One thing to try is to run the tank empty, and fill up with Sunoco 94, or whatever highest octane fuel you can get.

It's not a running on. It more of an odd motor related clunk that you hear from the back of the car when you turn it off. The car is always warm when I shut it off.
Fuel quality shouldn't be an issue as I have a full tank of 93 Shell V power(oohh nice marketing!) in the tank and it shut off this way on the previous tank froma different brand/station.
I expect that when I turn the key to the off position (from running), it should be immediately quiet stop. And that is not the case. It only happens for 1/2 second.
try having someone stand back there, (with the lid open) when you shut it off, and maybe use a flashlight. sounds like something is comming loose. had it worked on lately? possibly something last worked on didnt get tight.
I get a slight noise when I shut the engine off if the transmission is in neutral, but the clutch isn't depressed. If I have the clutch depressed when shutting the engine off, no noise at all. Give that a spin to see if you hear a difference.
