Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am linteresting in buying a 996 4S model. I understand the engine was enlarged in 2002 along with some other changes in the mechanics. I found one interesting 2001 with the GT kit option I like. But should I hold out for the 2002 to get the extra power? I do a lot of DEs but I prefer the modern design of the 996 over the earlier models. Has one engine or the other proven to be more reliable? Anything else I need to watch out on this model? Thanks Larry

POST 2Original post

I am pretty sure the 4S model was introduced in 2002, so it is only available with the face-lift and 3.6L engine. The 3.6L introduced in the post 2002 models has more low end torque as well as 20 more HP, it should be more reliable than the 3.4L, but RMS could still be an issue I believe.

POST 3Original post

There were many improvements in 2002, including the availability of the C4S. The problems of the various engines are well documented here. STFF, and you'll find plenty of information.

POST 4Original post

..996's diffs from a MkI (09 to 01) and Mk II.. I had a 01 for a short period, and then an 02 from then and still now: Huge difference to my feeling. The biggest of all is IMO the VarioCAm plus. OK, as said above, you have 20 more HP, but, the biggies is that feeling that you have power all over the RPM position ! The engine is much more torquey. Before any purchase of a MkI, IMO you have to test drive a MkII. On the side benefits, you will get a glove box (in Mk1 : niente, keep your stuff in you pockets !!) and if it is a Cab, you have a solid glass ..instead plastics ! From the outside, on Mk1 ..you will have the headlights of a Boxter, while on MkII you have the headlights of a "Turbo" ! ..Get Excellence of Septemper, the "market review is about 996 (and 997) ! ..my 2 cents !

POST 5Original post

I had both an 01 C4 and the 04 C4S cab at the same time. So I drove them both frequently. The 01 was lighter and more nimble, but the large improvements and styling of the C4S are definitely worth the extra money.

POST 6Original post

Larry, buy mine of course!! My '04 has 3450 miles and is completely as new. I have ads on the PCA, Rennlist and Autotrader sites. Email me at [email removed] if you're interested and want the best. You won't find a more perfect, or lower mileage 4S out there than mine. Here's the Autotrader ad! http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...e&rdpage=thumb

+1 Phil's car is like a French Rifle...hardly touched and never fired. It's like getting a new one, but you don't have to break it in.

POST 9Original post

I have a 99 for sale with a lot of DE/track oriented upgrades, AND a remanufactured motor; https://rennlist.com/forums/for-sale...ngine-etc.html

POST 10Original post

996 C4S is 02 to 05 only, widebody only, 3.6L only (makes the same power as the standard 02+ Carrera, ~320bhp, but weighs a bit more due to the body, brakes and AWD). The previous C4 car is narrowbody only, 3.4L only. If the car is going to see a lot of track, I think you should seriously consider testing a GT3 at today's prices, they are famously bulletproof at the motor/trans, and very very fast. Also drive a well set up 99-01 Carrera 2 like Ahmet's before making a decision.
