I'd give them a call first - give them the HTSA Campaign ID Number: 00V109000, and ask them if they can check your 996 by VIN to see if the work has been completed.
Leading evidence: 'now' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'now' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 996 by vin' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

He charged my $450 for labor and parts and replaced the fuel sending unit and did some recalibration.

I don't think there was any change from '99 to '02, but you might want to check your owner's manual to be sure.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The independent shop replaced the sending unit, calibrated it 3 times etc and it did not fix it.
I was wondering what is the fuel tank capacity for my 99 996? I have ran it to the low fuel warning light comes on and fill it up to find only 12.1 gallons until the gas nozzle clicked. I tried to fill it up some more but it just clicks as if the tank is full. Also when I "fill" it up, my gauge only shows 3/4 full.
sounds like what I had. Sometimes I could not even get that much in.
Check the thread 'filling the tank'
I found that by holding the nozzle straight up and down and not inserting too far in, more gas could be pumped in. Careful though, if you do not have it far enough in you could overflow.
My gauge never showed full before but I have only owned it for a couple of weeks. I drove it a couple times until it was close to empty and got about 250-260 miles to the tank. Filled it up and it was 11-12 gallons. I was wondering if there was something wrong with my tank.
Sounds about right - in an 03, the light comes on when one has depleted 13.5 gallons. (so ~2- 3 gallons remain)
In an 01 - it seemed the light came on when 14.5 gallons were depleted.
The owner's manual for my '02 says 16.9 gallons for the C2, 16.6 for the C4.
I don't think there was any change from '99 to '02, but you might want to check your owner's manual to be sure.
There is a recall on '99 996 for this: HTSA Campaign ID Number: 00V109000
1999 PORSCHE 911 FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Recall Date: 04/10/2000
Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. INCORRECT PROGRAMMING OF THE ELECTRONIC LOGIC UNIT CAN CAUSE AN INCORRECT FUEL LEVEL.
Consequence:
THE VEHICLE COULD RUN OUT OF FUEL CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL UPDATE THE SOFTWARE IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SO THAT THE FUEL LEVEL AND THE RANGE OF REMAINING FUEL ARE DETERMINED AND DISPLAYED CORRECTLY.
Potential Units Affected: 2734
I'd give them a call first - give them the HTSA Campaign ID Number: 00V109000, and ask them if they can check your 996 by VIN to see if the work has been completed.
Should all be recorded with Porsche I believe.
I just got a 02 C4s and I can barely put 11 gallons in it. I let it go towards the end when the computer only showed about 10 miles left before filling and yet I could not put in more than 11 gallons. As a result I barely get around 200 miles a tank.
What am I missing? Does the fuel indicator needle go below zero too into the red area?
DD
I know that the tank is at least 15+ gallons. Last weekend at the track, my fuel light came on and I stayed out for a few more laps. When the miles to empty went to --- (shortly after hitting 9 miles), I figured that I'd better come in. I was able to empty 3 5-gallon fuel jugs without any problem.
I do believe that the tank is 16.5 - 16.9 gallons. I guess I could have gotten in 1-2 more laps!
The TSB warns:
"Consequence: THE VEHICLE COULD RUN OUT OF FUEL CAUSING A LOSS OF POWER. "
That's what I would call an extremely logical and well thought out conclusion.
im assuming the recall has been completed on my new to me 99 996. i re-fuel when the light comes on and she takes approx 13-13.5 gals and im seeing approx 330 miles at that point
Hi Rick....I called the dealership and they said its a recall thing to with some valves. I am gonna take it in next week.
Sooo...I am not sure if these "valves" do not let us put more in....or they make the fuel indicator go crazy and it indicates empty when there is still about 5 gallons left. Will update next week. I suggest you call the dealership too.

So here is the update of my fuel indicator woes.
Mechanic 1 : The C4S tank is saddle bag shaped because of the AWD hardware in there. So it is a little more complicated than a C2 tank. Said it was a computer calibration issue and he did not have the equipment.
Mechanic 2 : Your fuel sending unit is messed up. He charged my $450 for labor and parts and replaced the fuel sending unit and did some recalibration.
I still have the same problem. I get only around 200 miles from Full to Empty. There is more fuel in there but the guage just shows empty. Mechanic 2 says ..."If the fuel sending unit does not fix it....you will have to replace the instrument cluster".
Do I believe this guy???????
When is the light suppose to come on in the 99? I run it down low looks below the 0 and still no light. I know on my 951 that I run it down below the 0 and still go a little til the light comes on.
Wanted to bring closure to this. My fuel gauge issue is now fixed. The independent shop replaced the sending unit, calibrated it 3 times etc and it did not fix it. Finally took it to the dealership and they had to "calibrate the cluster". Turns out the cluster was not set to USA as the country and this was causing the fuel gauge to misbehave!!!
Now I can put 15+ gallons into the tank and am a happy camper!!

Desidon -
was the recalibration of cluster by the dealer to USA as country considered part of a recall? Did they charge you for this service? I have same issue & wondering if it also affects the MPG calculation of the OBC because supposedly I only get ~ 15 mpg.
Glad you got your problem fixed & stay away from mechanic #2
Talk about getting shafted!! My Indy mechanic says he only owes me the labor part of $450 because technically he fut in a new sending unit in there....even though I did not need one!!!!
Oh...and he conveniently threw away the old sending unit and I do not even get that back.
The dealer did not mention any recall and promptly charged me $210 for the recalibration. IF you find out that the cluster recalibration is a recall, please let me know and I will try and get a refund!!
It is weird but setting the cluster to a diff country resulted in how much the fuel needle drops for a given consumption. Earlier I used to go from F to total E in 10ish gallons and now it is obviously 16+ gallons.
