Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well the rumor floating around the dealer ring for the last few months from several factory reps was a one off 996 with a V8 from a cayenne in it. Yeah right, I thought, untill it showed up today on a flatbed from PCNA for a no start as we do all their cars that are too far from the east coast. the car has no vin so it "officially" doesn't exist. the engine is essentially a cayenne as far as I can tell, even has the torque bar but the top right cyl. head but at a little more of an angle than in the cayenne, the intake has been made a little shorter as you can see. It has some different radiators that you can see through the grille, the bumper is a tad bit longer as you can see between the grilles and the lights (look real close and imagine a side view) and has openings in the wheel housing slightly larger than a turbo/C4S, the air cleaners are tucked in behind the bumper, accessible once the black plastic around the latch is removed it has two filters similar in installation as a boxster. the rear shelf where the DME used to be has ben slightly reshaped (no rear seats like a GT3) and now the area in there and underneath is the fuel tank with the cayenne V8 DME setup being installed if you look carefully by the pollen filter. the drivetrain is also similar to cayenne but is a stick (out of the european Cayenne?) but is very much shorter with no transfer case but there is a slightly larger trans tunnel as the CD holder and cubby are gone from infront of the shifter and its a carpeted hump. suspension in back is normal but up front is a custom subframe made out of steel and has the regular A arms and coil overs probably to compensate for the weight. A Cayenne diff hung where the gear box normally would go behind the flat six. the drive shaft has been stuffed down the tunnel and the exhaust seems to fit perfectly where the coolant tubes would go. mufflers are in the same location and where the six was has been boxed in to a trunk! It has the monsterous motorsport 6 piston brakes upfront with standard rear. really odd looking. with the engine off (i'm guessing as it needs a fuel pump that we dont have but is the same a turbo 996, but you would notice the V8 at anything but idle) there is really no giveaway from outside. I guess we arent allowed to drive it off the lot as instructed by a PCNA rep. (will anyone really notice a few miles?) Ok now the fun part, why does this car exist? the 996 is dead, Ive seen drawings of a new 928, the 997 is essentially the same under the new skin but we figured a flat 8 would be the logical evolution. My guess is this is one of those "special cars" that was produced for someone of importance high up like the 928 and 944 hatch backs and the 914-8. which would seem to hold weight as the parts are mostly bin parts and only a few one offs like the tank, and pieces under the front bumper and subframe which are all too easy for a company like Porsche to fabricate. the room is all but taken up in the front wich is why I'm guessing at such exspense its not a turbo. hmm I never come in the 996 Forum but was there a thread on this rumor? well this is the only picture the battery in the Nikkon would allow (atleast its the important one) since it sits in my box and is never used but I will get some more tomorrow if I can (my boss was giving me the evil eye)

POST 2Original post

1. please!!! use paragraphs, it hurts to read that, especially with something so interesting and potentially groundbreaking 2. the picture is obviously fake, come on, where would the driveshaft go, and the transmission?... yea... besides, its physically impossible for the cayenne engine to go into the 996's front especially on a carrera 4S/turbo body with the front diff. 3. the 997 is not a rehash of the 996 with new body, its over 80% new parts, new chassis, engine/everything. ...

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

dude there is no way I could do that in P-shop, just look at it, im telling you there is no front diff, its RWD has a manual trans with no T case and it does exist. The drive shaft runs in the same place it would to power a front diff in a C4, right down the middle genious, my guess on the turbo front bumer inlets are a must for the larger radiators. and trust me as I work on them and the 997 is a new skin with 80% re-numbered parts if it makes you feel better.

POST 4Original post

more pictures, preferably video. this is simply too 'out there', i mean, a front engined V8 911, not that its a 911 anyone if they actually did this. this is bordering on what the james bond crew @ die another day in london did to those astons, took out the V12s, put in ford V6s, and made them 4WD. anywho... going to need more proof, thats insane.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've seen some crazy stuff but this is tops. I took the pic with my own camera. when I heard the rumor, I figured it was the flat 8 i had benn hearing about for years then a factory rep said it was a V8 from the cayenne. I figured it was installed in the rear ala chevy 350 swap. but nope he said front. Infact i will try to ask him whos it is. I never bothered as it was just a rumor at the time. Anyone else hear of this. as far as the astons, I'm still trying to figure out how they made them 4WD

POST 6Original post

Yeah, Um, were going to need alot more pics From the looks of it the tranny would need to be in the back, doubt a tranny would fit in front. youd better get a pic with something to make it verifiable, or atleast lay your arm across the engine. this pic would be too easy to fake if you cant get multiple pics from different angles(try one from inside) Were gonna have to call B.S.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok you got me, I cant hold off two of you, eh it was worth a try for fun to see who would fall for it. oh well jig is up, hahaha, I thought about "putting" the trans in the rear ala 928 but you know the old saying, "the bigger the lie, the better the buy." oh well, better luck next time, maybe a post on some "generic" auto site, then maybe some fun.

POST 8Original post

DISGRACEFUL!!! Careful the Porsche god's don't strike you down!!!

POST 9Original post

The 996 looks more like a 928 than a 911 anyway.

POST 11Original post

Hehe... Carpet lined engine bay? ROFL! Pretty terrible PS job...

POST 12Original post

Anyone who has ever seen both a 996 boot and a Cayenne engine knows the driver and passenger would be sitting in the rear seats with no legroom. Not possible. Nice photoshop work though.... Anyway, the 996 is set up for a rear-engine. Placing the engine in the front would cause the front axles and suspension to be completely reworked (maybe removed altogether) and the chassis raised and widened horribly. And then there's the weight distribution issue. Hehe ... nah it was obvious

POST 13Original post

The first thing that somebody should have pointed out is that the hood would never have closed! It would have hit the engine!

POST 15Original post

Nice try!! But the carpet kind of gave it away.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

haha, it was worth a shot, thanx for the good sense of humor though. and photo shop is the only way anything other than a flat six should be installed in any 911.

POST 17Original post

fxnprsh, You had me going, FWIW. For real, is the 997 80% new parts or are they really renumbered 996 parts, as you posted ? My 993 had some 944. serial number parts as I recall.
