It was the only option I wouldn't compromise on when buying my second 996.

I've seen aftermarket bulb retrofits into the halogen housings, and as I said before, the difference between the factory litronics and halogen housings fitted with xenon bulbs is quite large.
Leading evidence: 'only option i wouldn't compromise' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only option i wouldn't compromise' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install with xenon bulbs is quite large' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The Porsche 996 uses the same projector housing for both Halogen and HID lighting.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

no affiliation, item #120614259007... still at a very good price.
As customary on other forums, if someone here is bidding on an item, speak up, so other members don't interfere
and drive the price up.
unless y'all just want to be jerkwads...
lol.
Not a Deal ... A fool and his money are soon parted...
Just purchase a HID kit for $49 and retrofit you standard halogen lights
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Slim-...Q5fAccessories
Not true, the factory litronics come with superior optics, and just switching to a xenon bulb doesn't quite do the trick. It was one option I looked for when buying a 996, as the difference between late litronics and halogen lights are... night and day. Get it? Yeah, that was lame.
DANGER !!
this type of bulb will burn too hot and cause your inner "plastic" lens to turn yellow, and then melt holes right thru it - the lens is not replacable and you will be eigher driving with yellow holes burned thru your lights, or getting a new set of headlights...
$1k for real lits is a fair deal
This should help a few Rennlisters with the HID retrofit ...

Fitted the cheap ebay HID's as soon as I got my 2002 996 -- was really disapointed that Porsche can get away with such poor standard lights
The HID's are a vast improvment -- really very good and a sharp cutoff on low beam and brilliant on high beam.
The only downside is that for flashing oncoming drivers the high beam has a delayed "start up time", but that does not concern me because they are too bright to be flashing anyone, it's too dangerous to have an oncoming car blinded
(And no yellow lenses)
The type of bulb used is only one of the factors to the quality of light output. I'm sure a higher output bulb may help, but to say that it's "as good" as the factory litronics is disingenuous. Porsche put a lot of R&D into building the optics/leveling mechanisms etc. into the set up, and it shows. I've seen aftermarket bulb retrofits into the halogen housings, and as I said before, the difference between the factory litronics and halogen housings fitted with xenon bulbs is quite large. It was the only option I wouldn't compromise on when buying my second 996.
Litronics assembly:
vs halogen assembly:
Would you mind sharing how you conclude they're the same? They have different part numbers, and are obviously different units. On an MK1 car, Litronics always came with projectors, and halogens came without, so they're identifiable from a casual glance. If I remember correctly, there were two separate HIDs available for the MK1 cars, one factory fitted, and a retrofit kit to be done after sale -again HID always meant different optics, as would be required to get the sharp cut off, halogen supplement for high beams, etc. From my experience, the MK2 bi-xenons are much improved over MK1, particularly under hard driving as the self leveling keeps the headlights aimed properly. The difference is not subtle. I've also seen an aftermarket bulb retrofit like the inexpensive ones available on eBay, and the results were less than stellar.
