I simply ran the mini-phone plug out the back of the radio, and then tucked it under the side of the console down to the ashtray.

The audio cable is long enough that I can pull out the iPod to look at it to change music if need be.

right now the only solution for integrating into a POST MY03 Car (the year they enslaved us with the MOST fiber optic bus) is to use an FM transmitter or modulator

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

there are two version of the BMW ipod, the first version didn't work for cars with the HK system found in many M3s but not all, and the second does.
Anyone integrate an iPod with their Porsche sound system yet? I'd love to know how you did it!
Seems to be the cutting edge for replaying music in a vehicle. BMW has it as an option integrated into their steering wheel controls.
I want to use one instead of a 6 CD magazine in which I tend to keep the same 6 CD's for months.
i love it when someone mentions this
here is a summary of everything that has been discussed on this topic in the last 2 years. (at this point in reading hte post, you can assume that nothing positive is goin to be said
)

an inline modulator can give slightly better quality, but requires ripping into the car.
griffin technology makes an Itrip that plugs on top of the ipod and transmits to an FM station that you can tune to the radio to.
unfortunately there is no OEM type solution on par with the BMW system (which admittedly isnt that user friendly and intuitive, but hell, its OEM), nay, there isnt even AUX-In.
dension has been 'developing' a solution akin to the BMW oem solution, but they've been doin it for over 2 years now, so it doesnt look like something to really look forward to.
Sad isn't it?
If you have a MY03 or earlier without the MOST bus, you can buy a < $20 kit from Becker that will allow you to take the headphone jack of the ipod into the AUX input of the becker oem unit.
Search the board any you'll find all the info you need to mail order.
Works just fine. You still use the ipod screen to select music. Only downside is that you see the wires.
i've been waiting for a legitimate i-pod solution for a while. alpine has been announcing one for many months but it's finally arrived. my local shop called me on saturday to schedule an install appt. the alpine website (
www.alpine-usa.com
) has more info. the product is the KCA-420i 0 IPod interface. i have no idea if it's any good, but i'm going to have it installed and check it out!
your lucky your car isnt an 03 or newer. we are unable to replace the head unit in our cars without MAJOR headaches
usually one has to tear out all the speakers and amps we paid good money for as factory options, then have the radio/car connection disabled so as not to immobolize the entire car and THEN its a matter of putting in an entire new system, because guess what, none of the old 'wiring' (actually fiber) is usable.
yay.
the integrated iPod on the BMWs is only for non M3s and cars without GPS....otherwise it is a BMW part hardwired to the head unit to play MP3s...The monster cable FM transmitter unit has worked flawlessly for me in the Pcars.
Here is my install:
MY01 996 Stock-looking iPod install
This picture is with the guts hanging out. You can hide the iPod in the cubbyholeand control it using the two new buttons highlighted. It's hooked up to a switched power-source and played through the Becker AUX IN:
it works for M3s. i know because i have it in mine.

I have found that the battery on my iPod lasts 8-10 hours of almost continuous use, so I did not feel that having a dedicated power source was necessary. I have a 2002 C2 so I have used the Aux-in connection to my Traffic Pro to input the iPod signal. I simply ran the mini-phone plug out the back of the radio, and then tucked it under the side of the console down to the ashtray. The Ashtray makes an excellent iPod holder with the addition of some foam weather stripping tape. The entire setup is very easy to use, and removing the iPod is a snap. The audio cable is long enough that I can pull out the iPod to look at it to change music if need be.
Richard:
I considered the non-smoking tray, but decided against it because it was too wide and let the iPod flop around, and I was having a problem finding the right paint finish (the soft touch paint). The regular ashtray fits the iPod very snugly with the foam tape.
