Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

PSA :...Here is a link to a thread in the 997 Forum that has a great step by step with links to having a PIWIS 3 for little cash...Acknowledgement to @PV997 for taking the time to write this up so meticulously... https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...only-75-a.html As y'all know I am an advocate for PIWIS but have never been an advocate for "Chinese clones" but I'll make an exception on this one since I think it will help DIY'ers to take better care of their Porsche 996...and the OEM PIWIS is out of realistic reach for all DIY'ers... I have a PIWIS 2 set-up that I just used last nite to help a friend troubleshoot a Left Rear Speed Sensor that was causing ABS Faults on his 996.... The PIWIS is invaluable to anyone who is serious about fixing their own 996..

POST 2Original post

Thanks! I’ve had the PIWIS III software for at least a year or two, but haven’t spent the money for the hardware until now. Looking forward to seeing if I can code the automatic door locks on my 996. I have the Durametric Pro. I’ll have to compare them both.

POST 3Original post

I have PIWIS II software not III. I guess I have to grab the PIWIS III instead.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 19810604

I look forward to that comparison.

POST 5Original post

Nice!! I have II and III set up on the same laptop, I still feel PIWIS II is more stable and prefer it!

POST 6Original post

Thanks for this! Procurement in process. My current gotcha is on my Cayenne. One of the headlights started condensating on the inside and it took out the control module. The light still works but the communications fail so it can't do its beam adjustments and such. I'll replace the control module and the housing, but it will take PIWIS programming to work correctly.

POST 7Original post

I already started building this out on my laptop and am just waiting on the dongle to arrive. The guide is fantastic and very easy to follow so I'd encourage any DIYers to give it a go. PIWIS is very powerful, but with that, it's important to tread carefully and not screw anything up. @Porschetech3 , do you have any tips or best practices for noobs, like myself? I know that there's quite a few convenience and other changes that you can make via coding. Is there a manual/guide/explanation available to help translate the options? For example, I believe there's a way to adjust when doors will auto-lock.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 19812128

Take a look here, he explained the auto-lock feature: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...diagnosis.html Also look here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turb...is-coding.html That's a good start.

POST 10Original post

Thanks PT3, appreciate the heads up... Nice price and write up. Was always curious of how a economical PIWIS could be had. Before reading that thread it was confusing how to do this. just what the 996 Dr ordered.... Is PIWIS 2 also available for a similar cost, which is better for our 996...? Anyone try this with a high speed 256gb thumb drive...?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 19812128, 19812212

For Noobs ::: My advice is to poke around as much as possible in "Simulation Mode" to get to know where things are located . It wont let you change coding or program so you can't screw anything up... After getting used to PIWIS in Simulation Mode then first thing is do a VAL ( Vehicle Analysis Log) for your car...It will give you all the coding, control module #'s ,Vin #'s , the overrevs...ect that you can keep or refer to later....Then do engine values and make a log...This is best done when engine is running good with no issues. You can then use this for reference values when something is not right to compare the values.... Don't be afraid to explore...the PIWIS is very powerfull but it will warn you and make sure you want to make a change or program a control unit... You can't really do anything that can't be undone/reprogrammed.. The main thing that will "brick" a control unit is low voltage...you MUST have a good 40 amp charger/clean power source when programming or changing coding or it will corrupt the module and be unrecoverable.. You can get the PIWIS 2 software and Virtual Machine the same way for PIWIS 2 to run on most any Laptop with an I3 or better processor, but the VCI for PIWIS 2 is ~$400 for a quality one..so this PIWIS 3 is a much more frugal choice... A "real PIWIS 2 or 3" would cost more than a low mileage Aero kit 996 with full leather in Speed Yellow....

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19813022

It is the same Tool the Porsche Dealers use to program keys BUT to program keys you also need IPAS codes that are obtained by logging into PPN ( Porsche Partner Network) ...If you don't have PPN access you can't get the learning codes to program keys ( or DME or Alarm control/Immobilizer) You can change coding or read and write other control units without PPN access/IPAS codes, but not keys, alarm control , or DME.... The people who have access to PPN are Porsche Centers, some Porsche Specialists, some large Lock and Key Companies....They all have to pay and be approved to have a PPN access... I recently helped a fellow Rennlister program 2 new keys to his wifes 996 that he was lucky enough to have the IPAS codes for.....These codes are not just handed out willynilly... If you have a really good relationship with someone with PPN access you may be able to obtain the IPAS codes for your car...

POST 14Original post

Are those IPAS codes hardcoded into the Immobilizer module and registered to the VIN? So if I damaged my vehicles original immobilizer module, and pulled a used replacement module out of a donor vehicle, I would need to get the IPAS code by giving the donor VIN to a dealership?

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19813149

Did you get a used "set" ?...... like the Immobilizer+ DME+ key ? If so then you may have more issues than most getting any IPAS codes because you don't own the car/VIN that these came from....and these codes are permanently imprinted in the components Yes each car/VIN has specific IPAS codes/Learning codes..

POST 16Original post

Well this is a hypothetical situation, but Im asking to learn. edit: okay, I think that makes sense now So the IPAS code is also coded into the DME as well as the immobilizer module. So it would be very difficult to use only a donor immobilizer module without the paired DME. And also, youre right about swapping in a used DME and immobilizer from the same donor car. But maybe the dealership can be convinced that the car has been dismantled?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19813208

If you are wanting to learn this is a great opportunity to learn .. Here is picture of the PIWIS VM home screen... The green Icons are PFD's with information on how to use PIWIS tester and the capabilities of it.. There is literally thousands of pages of Info..Once you get the software installed on you Laptop you can read all the info.. Even after reading all the info you will not know all the possibilities, so if a particular scenario/question in mind just ask... One very unique and helpfull feature on the PIWIS Tester for wiring diagrams for 997 and up is the " Interactive Wiring Diagrams " that are in the Tester. They allow you to highlight a particular wire/circuit or multiple ones and change colors on them to easily trace the circuit in multiple branches on multiple pages... Too bad the 996 wiring is not included in this.. The PIWIS software also contains all the programs for all the Control units on all Models...So the old control unit can be "read" and the info "written" to the new control unit .. or the new one can be programmed with the program in the Tester if the old one is unable to be "read" ..( the old control unit will contain coding specific to the VIN, whereas if the old control unit cannot be "read" the new control unit will be programmed from the Tester and the "coding" will have to done manually to the options of the VIN ) The Icons circled in green or info/how to files in the Virtual Machine , there is more info in the PIWIS program.....the icon circled in red starts the PIWIS Tester... Load it up and enjoy !!

POST 18Original post

Cool, thanks for getting me started in the right direction, Porschetech3!

POST 19Original post

I have my PIWIS up and running and started to play with the interface in the simulation mode, per Skip's recommendation. For anyone working through the steps, definitely DO use the external SSD and definitely DO download the zipped files individually, one by one. When I tried downloading the files in bulk from the first screen I wasn't able to get the VM to fire up with the image files and the size seemed off vs what was in the provided guide. My dongle should be arriving soon so I'll probably start playing around and exploring a bit more based on what modules show up with the car connected.

POST 20Original post

I followed the directions - purchased the dongle (due here Jan 5) - and the software/VM. The option to download for me was a single large ZIP file. It downloaded fine, unzipped fine and then I RAR'd it and it opens fine in VMware. I too have launched it and run in simulation mode. So far, so good. Waiting for the dongle to arrive. -Tom

POST 21Original post

First of all, thanks Skip (and the guy on the 997 forum)! I was able to get everything running with the VM and PIWIS simulation. Took a LONG time to download and subsequently unzip everything. Trying to order the dongle I keep getting an error on every ali express site i try with paypal. other sites are $200 plus so i am bit reluctant to forego the $30ish prices on ali express. Anybody have a link that worked using paypal? TIA

Thanks. Finally got one to work. Combination of link and user error.

My VAS 6154 clone arrived today and it works great. I had to change the connection type from Auto to USB and manually select the 996, but I was able to read a VAL and program the Alarm to automatically lock the doors. Im going to have hours of fun learning the PIWIS III.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source posts: 19817036, 19817674

Ditto! So did mine. Six days from China...not bad. I guess I'll crack a beer and start downloading software.

POST 26Original post

OK! I'm at simulation after download hell. After many internet connection fails on my slow AT&T internet I went to my sons house and got it done in a fraction of the time. AliExpress just sent a tracking note saying the dongle is at the local warehouse. Hopefully tomorrow. One thing to note, my SSD is formatted as exFAT and everything works well. The installation notes call for NTFS.

POST 27Original post

Bought mine too. SSD, and software is downloaded. Just waiting on the VAS clone. Looking forward to tinkering on my 996 and Macan.

POST 28Original post

Anyone have any ideas how to pull up 996 wire diagrams...? Seems they're missing on my clone ?

POST 29Original post

Unfortuantely that's not the wiring diagram for the entire series of 996. That is only the 1999 996 Carrera and the 2000 996 GT3. For all of the year models of 996 Carrera, you'll have to get the Bentley manual. If anyone has the other wiring diagrams in digital format, let me know. I'd like to compare them to the Bentley wiring diagrams.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah unfortunately the "Interactive Wiring Diagrams" in PIWIS doesn't start until 997 models, The 996 and Carrera GT are not included, you have to use "old school" diagrams. I have the 1999 2000 one I keep handy and I have the 996.2 diagrams somewhere on an old thumb drive but I dont know where they are at the moment, if I run across them I will post them here..

POST 33Original post

Success! Just finished first session with my Cayenne. Was able to clear codes related to the headlight failure. I thought I would be able to diagnose the 'dipped beam' error, but it started working yesterday: go figure. So, I looked at operating values instead, comparing them to the other headlight. A lot of poking around in the different modules. I'll get on the 996 later today, although there is nothing I need to look at, we'll look anyway.

POST 34 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's good to see quite a few people getting PIWIS Tester up and running... For the those who's 996 didn't come with OBC, remember you can turn that option on for free with PIWIS.....and to toggle through the OBC menu you can install the 4th stalk or just wire up a button to toggle......search the archive for the step by step how to on the button/wiring....

POST 35Original post

I’ve been enjoying learning the PIWIS, although sometimes I scratch my head wondering why something is here and not there. It is the key generator. Such tools are usually reported as viruses, while they are not. Harmless imho.

POST 40Original post

I have a PIWIS 2 which, as noted, is very finicky to get working. I'm getting one of these even though PIWIS2 is supposed to work better on the older cars I have (996 and 955). The goal would be to have something less finicky to make it easier to use.

POST 41Original post

The biggest change in the latest PIWIS III 38.250 version is the output in English instead of German. I've always seen the output in German with the PIWIS II. I noticed that if you use the older version of PIWIS III it's in German as well. I speak German, but there are some automotive terms that I know better in English than German since all of my automotive training has been in English.

POST 42Original post

Yesterday playing with the PIWIS on Luis' 04/98 996 was enlightening. I've created VALs for both the early 996 and my 2002 and the VALs are very different. The 1999 VAL is barely half the size of the 2002, but full of interesting info. Printing the VAL to PDF makes it easy to transfer via USB and then view on a system with a much larger monitor.

POST 43 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19823131

Tex , if you think the VAL's are different from the 99 to the 02, just do one on a 997.....it is literally 50 something pages long !!! Guys remember !! Keep the PIWIS/VCI away from the internet, DO NOT ALLOW IT TO UPDATE .... The software/firmware is plenty updated and updating can cause it to malfunction.. Porsche "killed" the PIWIS 1 tester with an update on purpose to force us to use the PIWIS 2.....30 days after the last update on PIWIS 1 it became dead on purpose... Just use the PIWIS 3 " as is " and keep it away from the Internet , you are lucky to have it running , it is plenty powerful and updated...

"At this point you should be back on the guest OS desktop with PIWIS closed . Connect the VAS 6154 to the cars OBD2 port with they key on ignition. Wait a few seconds until the VAS 6154 has initialized. Connect the cable from VAS 6154s data connector to a free USB port on your computer. This interface is USB 2.0 but higher speed USB ports should be backward compatible and work fine."

POST 48Original post

Following the ^ for my own 996. Have you tried manual selection? Once connected the status light is green. Perhaps try a powering down the vm and bringing it back up also.

POST 49Original post

Thanks for the quick reply. Thats kinda the question. What should be open when I connect the obd to the computer? Piwis software? Machine turned on?

POST 51Original post

Bumping this cause i just bought the piwis3 dongle for $22. I was thinking about just buying an older laptop to dedicate to this instead of the external drive and running a virtual machine. Who wants to set it up for me ? Thinking about something like this for the laptop with a 512gb hardrive? Its more money to do it this way but i want easy and stable. Mine puts the tick box sign next to connection to vehicle and ignition on. It recognizes these two, but not the model. I think this is typical for 996 models.

It means VM should be open on the simulated desktop screen without PIWIS open. Also, you can just plug the VAS into the USB port and VM will pick it up, you don't necessarily need to have it plugging into the cars OBD port to set it up. Once you have it connected to the virtual machine you can plug it into the car. As others have stated, you will need to select manual connection in PIWIS to communicate with the 996.

POST 55Original post

Success! I just has to wait a long time and then manually open and connect based on advice from 997 board. Worked great after that.

My dongle arrived from Aliexpress - and I was able to connect and get data from the car - 2003 C2. I did have to manually choose 911/996 to connect as others have mentioned. I will say - I don't like the orientation of the dongle in the OBD2 port - the status lights face the pedals. I have on order from Amazon - the following OBD2 port "splitter" - so two devices can be connected to the port. Amazon Amazon It is due to arrive today - so I will get it tested soon, hopefully this weekend. The other benefit - this will allow me to have the dongle not protruding downward into the footwell - so when I need to drive and capture data - the dongle can be somewhere out of the way. -Tom

POST 64Original post

Is there something I need to do to enable simulation mode?

POST 65Original post

My starting screen is a bit different from yours. It looks like your menu options are grayed out. Do they click?: But from here I click on Diagnostics 38.250, and without a connection to the car it takes me here: Then I click "Manual model line selection" and select 911, then 996. Then it says cannot connect and give the option 'F12' to enter simulation mode. There are more control units on the page. I didn't clip them all. What happens when you click on Diagnostics 38.250? Does it respond? If not, I'm not sure how to fix it.

POST 66Original post

Mine are all disabled and when I click on them nothing happens.

POST 67 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You may have lost your Imprint ....I know on my PIWIS 2 I have to set the VM calendar back a few years because it doesn't have a valid Imprint , IF I loose the Imprint I loose most of the Menu...Then I have to delete the PIWIS from the VM and reinstall.. I ordered one of the PIWIS 3's so I could help with the questions/problems and it will be here in a couple of days...( and because it is so inexpensive..lol)

POST 68Original post

I messed up my imprint. When I started the VM the first time I selected “I copied it” instead of “I moved it”. I also changed the time zone of the host. So it may have been either of these. So I needed to delete my existing VM and extract the original again.

POST 69Original post

Well buy cheap.....get cheap. I didnt stress the cable at all but i guess im buying another dongle because u dont think i can fix this. Make sure u unplug it before u move it around.

POST 70Original post

A company I used to work for often had us traveling with external hard drives with the company’s software on them so we could perform installs/reinstallls. We often warned each other to always disconnect the USB cables before storing them in our laptop bags/backpacks as the connectors often broke off inside of or broke the receptacles in the hard drives cases. Same thing applies to these, make sure you disconnect the USB cable before storing them just in case.

If you have a 996, I think piwis2 is more accurate in some procedures. If you don't have a working copy of PIWIS 2, going to piwis3 is the only way because of the clone 6154...

I didn't want to start a new thread so I thought I'd throw the question here first. I've 996.2 that has a couple of old faults. I've run the clearing process and when re-scanning they're gone. However when I rescanned a week later those faults that I cleared came back. They're not new faults as the data shows that the faulting distance (first KM and last KM) are exactly the same as when I cleared them. Any ideas on how I can clear them permanently?

Definitely got my moneys worth! I'm downunder in NZ and bought an ex lease HP Elitebook 1040 (i5, 8gb ram, SSD and decent screen), Aliexpress VAS dongle. Laptop cost me $130 NZD, VAS about $80NZD. So $210NZD or about $120USD. Still a good deal, as i will use it for VCDS on the wife's Audi and also some motorcycle stuff on my race bike. Thanks for making this clear for everyone

POST 91Original post

I've gotten my money's worth. (and I bought two) First thing I did was turn on the auto-door lock feature on my 996 which I REALLY wanted. Since then I have turned on the on-board computer for a friend and done some things I typically used my Durametric for. I have a Snap-on Ethos scanner that I typically grab first because it is quicker and easier to use than the Durametric Pro or the Snap-on Modis scope. But when I need better diagnostics for Porsches, the Durametric and now the PIWIS have me covered.

POST 92Original post

I'll be doing the auto door lock thing over the weekend, definitely a useful thing to have these days!

POST 93Original post

I enabled the auto door locks today. When I first accessed the coding screen for the alarm system, the "country coding" (set by Porsche) on mine was "--" (effectively, unset). I would receive an error message if I attempted to program the auto door locks ("Version coding"). The error was "50400 error in the data: write services faulty" or something similar. I then selected a value for "country coding" -- "USA (with sliding roof)" in my case -- and was then able to program successfully.

POST 94Original post

I did my door locks also, In the alarm setting i just pulled down the version section and changed from 4 to 2. I thought it would be harder than it was.

POST 95Original post

I got the computer portion of ver III to work, and I'm playing around in simulation mode until the hardware gets here. I found a manual online, which i have yet to digest, but my scanning of it leads me to think it give you overall procedure but not the coding well codes, values, etc. Where would one find the right place to enable cruise control?

POST 96Original post

not sure where to find the cruise control part, i assume under the DME? Maybe its a reflash and not just a tickbox?

POST 97Original post

Quotes source post: 19976281

Perhaps that will look different once hooked up to the car, but no, for now, I haven't found anything related to cruise control in the simulation

POST 101Original post

Oh I just found this thread! So excited! I have brought my car to Porsche, and to an indy twice to get my key programmed. Porsche said they "couldn't", mean they wouldn't, program my key since my internal circuit board is aftermarket. Not Porsche. The indy "forgot" to program the key, even though I have all of the codes, and the step by step PIWIS instructions from the vendor. So if I order all of this, and I have all of my codes for my car, I should be able to program the key to the car? If so, I may even go ahead and order a spare key then!

POST 102 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19987906

Yes, if you have ALL the codes you can program a new key.. You must have the IPAS codes to access the programming of your Immobilizer , you will also need the code that came with the new remote..

POST 103Original post

Quotes source post: 19988590

I have from Porsche the "code information" sheet. Transponder, radio serial #, DME Programming, Immobilizer Control Serial number, locking/alarm code, radio, immobilizer code etc. I also have from Specialized ECU Repair (Where I got the key fob circuit board) the remote programming codes. A long series of 2 letters & numbers.

POST 104Original post

Quotes source post: 19988764

Side question: how did you get the code information sheet from Porsche?

POST 105Original post

Quotes source post: 19988976

I went into my dealership to get my key coded. Sat in their waiting room for 2 hours only to have them come out and say we "can't" program your key because it was not a Porsche part, I replaced the internal circuit board with an aftermarket part from Specialized ECU Repair. I had step by step instructions and the programming code for the key, but the said they "can't" program it. Their software wouldn't work. I explained politely that what they really meant was that they "WON'T" program it. I explained politely that since it is my car, and I spent 2 hours waiting that I would like the programming codes. They printed off a sheet for me and sent me on my way... I'm stubborn and just smart enough to cause trouble. But dumb enough to stand around like an idiot until I get the answer I want. We own the cars, if the dealership says I can't have the programming codes for my car, I'd happily wait in the showroom until they show me their official memo or policy saying we can't have our own codes...

POST 106Original post

I've been using mine for a while, easy enough once you understand the Porsche ways... Trying to check cam deviation on my early 996, obviously it only reads Cam 1 but when I go to the actual values it just says -3 Kw or something and doesn't seem to change? Am i doing it right? Engine is running, so I thought it would display?

POST 107Original post

Quotes source post: 20016093

Is your car a ROW version (ZZZ in the serial number)? If so, these will only have one cam deviation sensor. A reading of -3 is within specifications. Ideally you want to check it after a long drive and the engine is fully warmed up.

POST 108Original post

Quotes source post: 20016624

yes its a ROW and has one sensor, but it doesn't seem to change? no matter the revs it just sits at -3. I assume it's supposed to change as you rev it? doesn't seem to be a live reading for some reason?

POST 109Original post

Quotes source post: 20017068

U assume wrong. Its a smoothed value taken over time. My Aultel scanner has an "actual cam value" this moves when u go over 3k rpm and shows the advance. Other scanners call it a diff name sometimes.

Hi all, I'm having some trouble with this setup. It seems to communicate with the VCI but it is not able to communicate with any of the modules on my 996.2. When generating a VAL, it goes through all modules but the report is completely empty. It fails to even detect a VIN. I've confirmed that it's a 1.6.6 using the VCI manager (offline) and it passes the self test in the VCI manager as well. I am using the PIWIS 3 WIN10 41.500+38.250 VMWARE image (PIWIS 3 WIN10 41.500+38.250 DEVELOPER + CODING ( VMWARE ) - nhanas). Any thoughts? Does anyone know if PIWIS can be used to program a replacement CDR23 in PROTECT mode to the car?

POST 118Original post

Quotes source post: 20264414

Not 100% sure but I believe that is how Porsche techs would perform the handshake between the MOST system & the CDR23 head. I have heard varying opinions on whether PIWIS will work, or the EPROM inside the CDR23 requiring a reset. Maybe @Porschetech3 can chime in with his experience.

POST 119 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks @gbarron lol.......if the CDR23 is in PROTECT MODE you must leave it powered ON and car running for 1 hour, ( It will then come out of Protect mode) Then you can use PIWIS to do a "handover" or to code in the CRD23 to the MOST System if necessary

POST 121 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's been over 20 years.....I honestly can't remember ....lol I "think" it depends on the reason it went into PROTECT MODE to begin with .....Like if it was stolen/borrowed from one car and installed in another the VIN will be mismatched and no sound....

After multiple attempts I was finally able to get a hold of support They sent me a new link, and I was able to get the download files again. Unfortunately, 3 of the download severs(I assume they are virtual servers) were busy and couldnt be accessed Support told me theyre usually not down for more than 2 hours and to ahead and download the rest of the files (that was yesterday afternoon). When I returned home last night the servers were still busy. When I tried them this morning, they were still busy I contacted support again, and they gave me a different link I was able to download from the new linkso I downloaded parts 01, 02, & 05 that I hadnt been able to download yesterday. When I started to extract the files, only the files I had downloaded from the new server extractedNow support tells me you have to download all the files from the same server

@meowmeows did you ever get this working? I have a similar situation where I have things running but doesn't seem like there's communication back and I get the grayed out fields and (?) errors.

Where did you guys get PIWIS II software? I have 3 running but it cant see deviations on my 5.2.2 cable throttle car. I recently got a diametric and it atleast reads the values but live data shows them static at 0 and 3*, which is rich given all the plastic in the oil pan.

So, I was finally able to download all the zipped files and unzip them succesfully to my ssd (the first two times I tried, the servers were messed up, and then life intervened - death in the family, travel etc. Unfortunately when I run/try to run VM Ware it cant find the iso file for Win 10... What am I missing?
