Heck I drain the oil from my 02 Boxster with over 230K miles (last oil change and it is about to get another now that it has just under 235K miles) and check the oil from the housing and the filter and see nothing but oil.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought my 996 a year ago and I just did my first oil change today. There was nothing on the drain plug.....nothing. Then I tore apart my used filter and inspected it. Nothing... Nothing to see that the naked eye can see. The car only has 42K on it. I put 5K on the car during the last year. Am I missing something or is this pretty normal for a low mileage car. I guess I could have the oil analyzed next go around... but It looks like the bearings must be wearing just fine. Knock on wood!

POST 3Original post

Have you had your eyes checked lately? A UOA will tell you what minute particulate is present but if there isn't anything obvious in the filter then no major debris is passing thru the oil supply to the filter. There can still be minute particulate from normal wear in the oil sump but it does no harm there. Perhaps you need to do more track driving?

POST 4Original post

I did the same thing on my 997S and found absolutely nothing. I also have a magnetic oil drain plug and get nothing on it either.

POST 5Original post

Nice... its a good thing to do and you should be proud of yourself for tackling it!!! BTW - IMO if you saw stuff, you would know (I have seen stuff before, its pretty obvious)

POST 6Original post

It is normal. It is normal for any engine that is not undergoing some severe internal mechanical break down. Heck I drain the oil from my 02 Boxster with over 230K miles (last oil change and it is about to get another now that it has just under 235K miles) and check the oil from the housing and the filter and see nothing but oil. Nothing scary at all. In your car's case, with no symptoms, I wouldn't expect anything to be present. The odds are overwhelming in your favor you'll never see anything. Relax. Best thing you can do is regularly change the oil/filter and drive the car as often as possible. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 7Original post

No pieces of broken off gaskets, ends of retaining rings, a lost washer, a misplaced o-ring, chunks of rear main seal, displaced ***** from an IS bearing??? Nothing? JK;-)

POST 8Original post

The initial break in is where the machining and sealing stuff gets flushed out. That should be the only real time to see debri. Removing the initial break in oil is the most important time line issue of oil changing. It's by a certain mileage with in a certain time frame. Say you don't make the mileage in a few months. Change the oil since the lubes and gunk rinsed out by the oil flowing needs to be removed since it has polluted the oil making not very good. Then you can do another oil change after hitting the mileage if you like.
