Not only does that sound like a wives tale, but I can tell you from experience that I run 18's with track tires and use the 996CAB as not only a DD but a track car as well.

Like mentioned above, I run OEM 18" sport classics on a 2000 cab that came new from the factory with the car and have not had any problems.

) that covers the 1966-2001 models and reports "Advisories against using 18 inch wheels on (the 1999 cabriolet); while chassis stiff enough, harmonic vibration begins cracking windshields." Again on the 2000 model: "Advisories continue against using 18-inch wheels, tires; cause chassis falures despite new ultrastiff chassis, as from 1999."
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2000 996 Cab 4.
I've heard that upgrading the stock 17" wheels to 18" has been blamed for windshield cracking/stress fractures on the 1999 and 2000 model 996 convertibles.
Could this be true?
I don't think so....there are plenty of folks with 18" wheels (some even with 19") on their cabs, even with stiffer suspensions etc.....never heard that it could do any damage to your windshield!!!!
I have 18" Carrera wheels on a 01, with H&R springs and bilstien shocks with no problems...
Not only does that sound like a wives tale, but I can tell you from experience that I run 18's with track tires and use the 996CAB as not only a DD but a track car as well. Oh, I also have the RoWM030 sport suspension. Only way I can see you cracking your windshield is rolling the car in a crash.
it is not the windshield itself but the hard plastic part around the windshield which holds the rubber seal that breaks.... only fix is a windshield replacement about 1000$
ask how I know it..
2000 c4 coupe rowm030 18" ps2.... it happened during a spririted swiss alp pass drive after many of them in the last 48000km (problem free otherwise so wtf)
ymmv
I have never heard of that problem before. I have a 2000 Carrera Cabriolet that I bought new back in 2000. I am running 18" Sport Classic II's. My cab is a daily driver and is driven all year round. I have not had any problems with the windshield except for the little pits in the glass that is a result of daily driving.
Thanks for the feedback. I ask because there is a publication written by a guy named Randy Leffingwell called the Porche 911 Buyers Guide published by Classic Motorbooks (
www.motorbooks.com

Again on the 2000 model: "Advisories continue against using 18-inch wheels, tires; cause chassis falures despite new ultrastiff chassis, as from 1999."
Sounds contradictory. I was going to scan and post these pages for you but had some technical difficulties with it last night. This guys said some other rather unusual things in his book too which makes me doubt the accuracy of his "facts."
The way he wrote it makes it sounds like Porsche issued advisories against using 18" wheels on the 1999 and 2000 model (Cab vs Coupe?) 996.
I'm convinced that it's a non-issue. I've also tried to check the Porsche TSB's on alldata.com to see if they ever issued any such "advisories" and I found none.
It's just amazing how much wrong info is published in books... guess publishers can't do all the fact-checking they ought to do.
well two people on this thread had the plastic thingy problem.. seems not related to 18" but seems to be recurring..
also why do you think porsche reinforced the chassis from 02 on, this represented a big weight bump, and most of the additional HP's from the 3.6 engine got eated by this additional weight. I mean there must have been a real reason to stiffing up the car by 25% from 02 on.
It is just wrong to have to replace the windshield for this stupid 20cent plastic part on a car like this.
Jeff,
Stock suspension here! Although I do have some sympathy for the "feel like I'm floating" thread; some day I will do a stiffer suspension as well as a SSK.
Cheers
Mine is stock too and you read my mind! The B&M short shifter (plus new linkages if they are not included?) is next on my to-do list. Followed by some kind of suspension upgrade.
I almost completely solved the "feel-like-I'm-floating" problem by upping my tire pressures to 36 (cold) all around as per owners manual specs.
I want to flatten out the front-end while cornering but am not ready to pull the trigger on a full RoW-030 install. I plan to do everything myself but the spring installs scare me! Anyway, I'm considering beefing up the sway bar first to see if that satisfies.
Best,
Jeff
Jeff,
I just installed the B&M Short Shifter on my car. I would recommend that you drive a car with the SSK first before you install it. I was surprised by how much shorter the throws are with the SSK. It took a couple of days of hard driving to get used to the increased shift effort and very short throws (reverse is REALLY short). I am used to it now and like how the shifts feel really precise -- I just wish the throws weren't that short. Anyway, try before you buy if you can.
Cheers,
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the tip. I'll check my tire air pressure again. Last I checked it, it was okay but it can hurt to check again.
For those in the SF Bay Area, if you want to know if your car "feels like it's floating", there is one very small stretch of road that was on my way to work (previous company...) that every time I drove over it in my 911, I thought "Sealy Serta! Gosh that's gotta be wrong!"
Taking the Guadalupe Pkwy (87) exit off 101 south and immediately exit at the Skyport/Airport exit. There's a smal riser as you hit this exit. Dare I say it, I think my Lexus SC300 feels stiffer going over that riser...
Good idea, Eli. If you know of an '02 C4S in cherry condition for $55K or less I'll take it!
Hey, I noticed you have a Pelican address. Can you tell me if the B&M Short Shifter comes with new linkages or do I have to buy those seperately?
Cheers,
Jeff
Jeff,
The B & M comes with brass inserts and teflon pivot bushings.... The throw is reduced by 35% and the unit itself is machined CNC 303 stainless steel.
