And yes I plan on getting a PPI done at a highly recommended local PCar independent shop!

So basically all things being equal save for miles and transmission set ups, which would you suggest?

My plan is to use the car as a summer toy and get involved with the local PCA chapter events, mildly upgrading suspension and bits along the way.

The tiptronic is a very good automatic transmission, and I have read posts by people who like to use theirs on the track too.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all! I've been searching for a 996 for quite some time now and have found 2 almost identical 1999 C2's, one tiptronic with 62,000 miles and one is a manual gearbox with 111,000 miles. Both are multiple owner cars in pretty much stock shape save for upgraded wheels.
My plan is to use the car as a summer toy and get involved with the local PCA chapter events, mildly upgrading suspension and bits along the way. I'm really keen on the lower miles of the one but not too keen on the tiptronic gearbox as I plan on tracking and autocrossing the car, chime in if you have an opinion on that please.

99-01 tiptronics are inferior to the 2002+ Mercedes transmissions. Since you plan to use the car as the toy and occasional DE car, manual is preferred. So, get the manual.
If your keen on the lower miles I would wait and look for a lower mileage manual car. There are plenty of good examples out there so don't be in a rush.
A very different driving experience, tip and manual. Tips are great transmissions. I'd either go for the 62K tip, or look for a lower-mileage manual. As a daily driver in lots of traffic, I'd choose Tip. As a fun-only car, I'd choose manual.

The tiptronic is a very good automatic transmission, and I have read posts by people who like to use theirs on the track too. From what I recall, you have to learn different techniques regarding shift timing and such but the transmission shift should be solid and it actually upsets the car less when a shift occurs during a corner vs a manual. The tiptronic has a mode(s) that holds gears and keeps upshifts from occurring too soon when you drive aggressively. Search the forums for more info and opinions if you are still interested in pursuing it.
Agreed with all replies so far, imho you should maybe try to find a lower mileage car w the manual. You will get more involved with the driving experiences and therfore will have more fun with your new car. I know I do with mine each time I take mine out on weekend drives. Cheers,
thanks for the input guys, I am honestly leaning toward a manual for those reasons, and the fact that I have great roads around my place.
I also plan to do as much work on it myself so a manual is way easier to deal with!
I'll post up pics when I make my purchase!
Go manual, or go home. Wait for the right one. I have only had cars / trucks with stick shifts for the last 15 years, daily driver or not. Just a personal preference. Granted it has been hard finding SUVs with sticks, but they are out there! I would not get a pcar with a tip, stirring it up is most of the fun!
