Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know this is likely nothing new to most of you that have had these cars for a while... I finished replacing my AOS in car today. While it was a major test of patience, the actual mechanical work was not terribly rough. The only thing I would add to the already well documented process: 1) if you're careful, neither the overflow tank nor the alternator need to be removed. 2) be very very delicate with the brittle vacuum lines under the intake. I broke one and it cost me 2 hours of research and 2 hours of replacing it by feel. Study the pictures and diagrams of the vacuum lines before you start the project. 3) Craftsman make a semi flexible 1/4 inch drive extension that is about 3" long made from heavy cable. It makes taking the intake bolts out a lot easier. 4) dropping the engine to the crossmember makes all the difference. 5) all said and done, I would drop the motor if I had to so this again. 6) it is pretty cool to have a nice steady idle.

Hey thanks. It survived the commute in 12degree weather this morning, no CELs Now I need to get the rear window (cab) repaired...it should raise the interior temp a bit.

POST 4Original post

EdTexas, how many miles on your cab when you did this? Mine is almost at 60k and I'm thinking about replacing mine during this service interval, although I don't have any noticeable symptoms. Thanks!

POST 5Original post

I spotted a 996 in the other day for an AOS. Tip equipped car. The engine did not have to be removed or even lowered. I saw the alternator had been removed along with one side of the intake system the driver's side to get to the AOS.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Skiracer: Car has 77K miles. I had most of the symptoms. Macster: I just flat couldn't get my hands in to pull the intake bolts
