Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, I have an '01 C4 and was thinking about getting a pair of muffler bypass pipes. I heard a car with them on Youtube and got excited about the sound. 1) What does everyone think about them? 2) Will I also feel some more power as well? 3) Will I need to do anything else to my car (I ask this because if I were to mod my motorcycles exhaust, I would have to do some fuel re-mapping)? 4) What brand should I get? 5) Also, my car came with Fabspeed mufflers (which I will keep in the garage in case I want to switch back)... will going to these bypass pipes actually make me lose some power? Thanks

POST 2Original post

I have Fabspeed bypass pipes on my C4S. They sound awesome, but are obnoxiously loud inside the car and drone really bad (they're loud outside the car too, but not as loud as you'd think for normal driving, but they scream when you get on it). If it's just a weekend/fun/track car it's not that bad, but if you plan to do any long trips on the highway with them, you will hate them. The nice thing about them is it only takes about half an hour to swap them out for your regular exhaust, so you can switch between them as you please. As for power increase, you might notice a little less low-end torque due to reduced backpressure, but you'll probably notice a little more top-end power for the same reason. You can feel the 50 pounds missing from the back of the car though.

Do a search on Fister Ds. You can thank me later...

POST 4Original post

I don't think bypass pipes can be compared to Fister D's, not nearly as loud. I'm thinking about going bypass myself and could careless how loud it is...

POST 5Original post

My Eastern PA suburbs neighbors seem to be a little freaked out by my Fabspeed cat backs. I like the sound of bypass pipes, but it appears I am now half deaf from a life of motorsports. I agree with the other posters that youwill not experience an increase in usable power and I personally would not push my neighbors any further.

POST 6Original post

I did the fabspeed supercups. They are a good inbetween from the bypass pipes and a sport exhaust. They do drone and are loud... But not as much as the bypass pipes.

POST 7Original post

i went with the after hours exhaust, under a grand, ZERO drone at cruising speeds and sounds deep. Seemed to get a bit louder after I got an intake but nothing i can't deal with... I can't tolerate drone when it comes to exhaust so I was very happy with it. construction was good too, great welds and has held up nicely...

POST 8Original post

I'm running bypass pipes and it is LOUD. My 996 is a fun car, so its no big deal. Fun and loud. Turn up the radio. REALLY LOUD in a parking garage! Did I say fun though?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I saw a cheap pair of bypass pipes on ebay, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996-...ht_4321wt_1143 and normally, I would never buy some Chinese crap, but these are just tubes with exhaust tips, so it's not like buying something that is more important, like headers or cats, etc... now the build quality is crappy, and the polish on the tips is low, I know... but is it worth it?

These are the ones I have on my car. I'd give fit an A, and finish a B+. For $150 perfect. Drove the 996 to work and had a ball! I ran the car for a week with just cats and it was SUPER LOUD. The bypass pipes seem to make it a bit more tolerable or less rude. Maybe its just getting the exhaust reverberation out from under the car and out past the rear bumper. I have Fister D's on order, but may not install them for quite some time - like when I have to go to get smogged in 2 years. I'm having way too much fun listening to my motor. No real drone, but then again, I'm in a cab and its not a quiet car anyway. Aaron

I have a set of Fabspeed Maxflos waiting to go on my car, but I wish I would have spent the money for the After Hours exhaust instead.

POST 12Original post

Thanks for the feedback guys, the bypass pipes are loud and can become hard to drive with on long trips. But we have our mufflers which are designed for everyday driving and still have a nice sporty sound. I think the better route to go is do the Sport Cats and Mufflers, that combo sounds awesome and isn't too bad. Let me know if you have any questions and PM me for special member pricing on any of these upgrades. Thanks and enjoy.

Bypass pipes are loud for many people and really great for the young at heart. For a complete system that produces a wonderful sound while adding some kick... go with the Cargraphic system.
