Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All! First post. First Porsche, that I just got two days ago! I have 1999 convertible with 490 audio option. I will have Sony XAV-AX1000 receiver. I would like to upgrade four speakers using adapters. What speakers would you recommend that dont break the bank? I am not an audiophile, but I appreciate a good balanced sound. I will mostly drive with top down, so there will be wind noise etc. Thank you for your advice!

POST 2Original post

I've seen but not used adapters on Etsy go to search box on Etsy enter renndition in search box and scroll down and you'll see them, as for what speakers don't know what would be best low cost

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did you upgrade your speakers? What are you using? I am not looking for low cost, just good value. Thank you!

POST 4Original post

I took the rear seat bottoms out (Velcro holding them in place) and plopped in a pair of bookshelf speakers with a 6” speaker and a tweeter. Size is probably 8 x10 inches. I don’t have front door speakers and the original speaker openings only allow a three and a half or four inch speaker. Too tinny without a woofer, which I don’t want to put in the car. My favourite speakers are the exhaust tips and the aftermarket air intake.

POST 6Original post

I upgraded with: Alpine S2-S40 front dash Alpine SPG-10C2 for rear After listening, I would put S2-S40 on both front and back... I did not change the door speakers.

POST 7Original post

Honestly? Airpod Pro's or any in-ear noise canceling headphones if you actually want to listen to music/podcast. That being said, I did upgrade mine to Alpine S40's front and back as well, the are connected to a 1DIN PCCM, which will be upgraded to a Blaupunkt London 500 when it finally is released in early 2026. These speakers do need adapters and if you search from eBay you'll most likely find what you are looking for. Mine were from UK and 3d printed, worked like a treat. Additionally I'd recommend using automotive grade noise trap material behind the rear speaker as this will cut off a portion of the rear tire noise. I used materials from Comfort Mat, specifically their "sound trap" foam blocks. You'll find installation guides with adapter information from youtube as well, search is your friend.

POST 8Original post

Hi @isalos Im about to drop the S2-S40 into my 996 coupe - did they fit upfront without issue? I'm going to butcher the old speakers to get the mounts and drop the S2-S40 into them. Crutchfield doesnt include them in the models that fit, but seems many folks have used them successfully. Let me know - thanks!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 20312044

They are not a direct fit. So I had to cut the frame from the old speaker and create a frame/stand, and then bolt the new speakers onto it. It is straight-forward when you see it. I did not get any pictures to show you, but remove one front dash speaker, take a picture, post it here and I will show you where to cut. Obviously there was also some glue-ing as well, with Sikaflex 291, for even better stability.

POST 10Original post

Heres the passenger rear speaker. Hows the best way to cut these brackets?

POST 11Original post

Can you put a photo from the side? I will try to remember, now this photo is too dark...

POST 12Original post

I've done rear panel speakers, both doors and both dash speakers. I cut the old speakers out with some sheet metal clippers then used a Dremel with the sanding attachment to smooth everything out. That left a smooth ring for the new speakers to sit in after its reatached to speaker enclosure. The other part was finding the right connectors for the speakers then attaching them to the original speaker wires that i had to strip.

POST 13Original post

how much you want to spend? I have a full Focal Utopia system in mine with Audio Control Amps...6.5" fit in the doors and 3.5" to 4" mids and a 1" tweeter fit in the dash. 5 1/4" fit easily in the rear panels

POST 14Original post

Bump I have the factory amp and everything I find says I need 2 ohm speakers for the dash replacement. Any thoughts there?

POST 15Original post

I added Focal speakers to the dash. I left the door speakers alone and just added more power to them with a Sony amp and they sound pretty good. My dash speakers literally fell apart in my hands so baking in the sun had killed them.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 20710715

As you can see from the photo above the speakers are 4ohm. The front speakers on the dash. If you are using AI maybe it is hallucinating...

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 20185901

The previous owner of my 996 loved music and spent a lot of money on a stereo system that was professionally installed with excellent craftsmanship. With the car in park and engine off, it's amazing. But, if you run into certain road conditions the background noise overwhelms the audio quality of that expensive system. Freeway listening takes ridiculous volumes if I am on stud damaged road surfaces. When I'm out of a town I switch to Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. I have a pair for the wife as well. Their noise cancelling defeats all road background noise. My wife and can have an easy conversation. When I'm solo, I turn off CarPlay, fire up Highway Radar that pairs to the V1R2 radar detector and do iTunes. Highway Radar temporarily interrupts my listening pleasure with a notice that there is a Smokey ahead, giving me time to throttle back and continue on my way without an annoying, unplanned stoppage. The volume level needed for clear listening is a fraction of the no headphone db.

POST 20Original post

Fwiw, CAI in Sacremento has speakers with adaptors that are drop in ready to fit if you are not an audiophile that likes to tinker with the sound system. From a sound standpoint, I learned a long time ago that a 996 isnt really a car that you will get incredible audio from because its a sports car. If you want to put in all kinds of noise reduction padding and add weight, you certainly can transform it. But that means no exhaust sound improvements, no intake sound improvements, no stiffer engine and trans mounts, and certainly no performance suspension upgrades, because you will hear them. For sure, the 991 and 992 are different creatures. They are big, heavy, padded and designed for the owner that wants more luxury and comfort with less sports car noise. So it's easier to get better sound out of them. No right or wrong answer, just alot of choices and trade-offs.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 20713066

This is true. I did a lot of sound deadening, wire upgrade, almost everything new with DSP,Excellon head unit, subs and Focal speakers. Lots of work. Its kind of silly, mine is a cab and there is only so much you can do. But like many of us Im a little OCD about the car.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 20713066

A bit OT but a reminder since most people just assume.. the 991 is lighter than the 997 and very close to 996 weight by trim a lot of the time. A 991.1 Carrera is a 3050lb car

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 20714150

Yeah, you are looking at ~150 lbs heavier comparing a 991 to a 996 by model.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 20714186

I think you are giving 996 too much credit. They are in the noise within trim.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 20714193

I give the 996 alot of credit, which it deserves. But it will not get any credit towards being a big, heavy, comfy, quiet car like the later 911s.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 20714032

I did this to a brand new 350Z. The auto audio shop was used by NBA players for their paycheck cars. At 250 miles I dropped off the keys and they disassembled the interior to deaden everything. They did perfect, complete work. The Bose headphones weigh 4oz and sound incredible. Someone out there is driving a heavy Z.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 20714199

It is just as heavy as a 991 lmao. Facts are facts.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 20714516

Check your facts. The 991 Carrera is 150 lbs heavier than the 996 Carrera. Its a heavy lass. But it does have a damn good sound system. So let's bring this thread back to speakers for the 996.
