One more possibility is to get the beautiful gold plated metal Carrera scripts used on the 356 series Carreras.

The "911" badge is unusual and for a 996 was used only (as far as I know) on the 40th anniversary special edition.

File off the mounting pins (so you don't have to drill holes in your rear deck lid), and use a sheet of the same type of 3M double-sided tape used for the plastic scripts.

To each their own of course, but personally I'd repair (replace) the badge and wear it with pride.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just noticed that the "Carrera" emblem on the deck lid is cracked. The black lettering is nearly invisible on my dark green car and I'm thinking of changing to silver lettering. I find it a little odd that you can't find the designation "911" anywhere on the car, so I'm also thinking about changing it to "911". (Tired of people asking me if it's a Boxster).
How does the neighborhood review board feel about changing the rear script
1. To silver?
2. from "Carrera" to "911"?
I wouldn't want to make another DSL faux pas.
It bugs me when folks ask if it is a Boxster. And when you say "No, it's a Carrera." they follow that up with "is it a Turbo?" There hasn't been a TurboCarrera for 25 years (1976 was the only year the script actually said that, after that they were just Turbo), but that is what they think all Porsches are.
So, just put whatever you want on the back of that car, because no matter what you put, the vast majority of the ignorant and unwashed population will never know the difference. You might take a little heat here if you put TURBO lettering back there, but we are your friends and we will still be your friends no matter what you put.
The rest of the folks don't really matter.
The silver "911" numbers
would
look good on your car.
Nobody has ever asked if my 996 was a Boxster, but I always get.... is it a Turbo?
My car is debadged but I am fan of the 911 script, probably look great on your car.
I've heard the "Boxter" comment before, but it doesn't bother me. (I like the boxter too
) I really like the way the silver "911" looks on the back deck lid, so I say go for it. If I were to replace mine again, I'd consider going with the "911" script.
It's not really a "911." It's a 996. Either put a 996 script on it (which doesn't exist) or just label it as the factory does--"Carrera." Many opt for silver when their base color is dark, if you want higher contrast.
I opted for a lower profile, because I wish to remain invisible!
Maybe a stupid idea, but how about getting the 911 or Carrera script and having Bumperplugs in the Dark Green of the car? That tone on tone looks rich -- like EDGY01. The black script on a black car looks particularly good.
I know, but I had to toss a grenade in there! Porsche markets it as both a "911" and a "Carrera" because they are able to bank on the 911 cash cow.
Think about having it painted by Eric at Bumper Plugs--you don't need to announce what you are driving. You're driving a terrific car and you have no need to explain anything!
The "911" badge is unusual and for a 996 was used only (as far as I know) on the 40th anniversary special edition. Maybe I'm too much of a traditionalist, but I'd be reluctant to borrow a designation used for a specific application like that.
Besides which, I think "Carrera" is one of the most beautiful and evocative names in the car world.
To each their own of course, but personally I'd repair (replace) the badge and wear it with pride.
I'm a fan of doing what "you" want.
I did what I wanted and I'm really happy with the subtile look , black
911
on black. I really didn't like to advertise to the world that I'm driving a Turbo, and disliked it even more in chrome on black.
Trivia
The 996 script actually did exist. It was used in Europe, and also on a very little known US option package in 2001 called the GT Package. The actual script was "996 GT". Somewhere in my old photo CD's I have a picture. I'll try to remember to dig it out and post it here as an update to this post.
And futher trivia: The 968 script comes as three separate numbers on the sheet. You can buy two 968 scripts, combine the 9 from one and the 9 6 from the other. Unfortunately, they only come in black.
The "911" badge came on 40th Anniversary and Millenium Editions. Since my car is a MY 2000, it is not much of a stretch. Suncoast does sell a "996" badge

Be careful what part number you order. IIRC there is a slightly different one depending on your MY car. Something about the curvature of the script and rear deck lid or something.
Have you considered vinyl? You could have any designation you wanted in any color and/or script and size that suits you. It would never crack and you could easily (and cheaply) replace it whenever you wanted.
Would love to see the 996 GT script sometime!
I thought once upon a time I saw a "959" script on the grill of the 959. Sort of like the style in this pic:
My car has the badge above the bend in the deck lid, but I've noticed that some have it below the bend. Which do you have, and did you mount the replacement in the same place?
I'm wondering if there are different part numbers or if they only make the newer version (for lower mounting).
Mine (like all 1999-2001 models) came lwith the badge above the bend in the deck, so that's where I put the replacement silver badge. The problem was that the replacement I bought at the local dealer was meant for the below the bend. They are different because the top of the "C" in Carrera is supposed to curve back (away from you) to follow the contour in the deck for the above-bend mounting location. If you get the one for the bottom, the "C" sticks up toward you. The part numbers are as follows:
Carrera logo in silver: 996-559-237-07-4PU (for 1999-2001); 996-559-237-10-4PU (for 2002-2004).
I did this in 2005, so I don't know if they've now discontinued the 1999-2001 version.
One more possibility is to get the beautiful gold plated metal Carrera scripts used on the 356 series Carreras. Large for the rear, or small from the front fender sides, are both still available. May look good on green, especially if you have a tan interior, and would provide the contrast you are looking for.
File off the mounting pins (so you don't have to drill holes in your rear deck lid), and use a sheet of the same type of 3M double-sided tape used for the plastic scripts. Just use a sharp blade to trace around the metal script (before mounting, of course - LOL!).
I get this one too and even after I have told a few no.. They dont believe me?
How weird is that?
Never ran into the boxter comment. I think becasue of the aero kit
Better than what I got asked: I was getting something out of the trunk (hood) and someone stopped and seriously asked what kind of VW it was.
And I like the silver 911 idea. I think that looks smart even though incorrect. I might even do it on mine.
Oggie,
You my be right on the years of Up or Down Script placement on C2's... But my 2000 C4 has the "Carrera 4" in Silver mounted low. But then it also has a Silver & Black Hood Crest that is uncommon as well. Maybe MY2000 Exclusive option on the US C4 ??? Or maybe mine is a Dealer optioned car.
Mark - I would like to know more about this 996 GT package you mentioned. Was that Trim or Performance - interior or Exterior - like the GT3 Aero?
Jacks911 et al,
I found the disc with pictures of the car. I will start a new thread so as to not to hijack this thread any further. It will be titled as above "2001 996 GT."
Teaser below (for the purpose of showing the OP of this thread what the 996 GT graphic looks like). Sorry for the odd angle for showing the script, but I was still pre-digital on my cameras in 2002 so this picture and those on the other thread were "posed" and shot by a professional photographer. Not me.
