For those who still have their marbles, I checked the fusebox and the fuse for the 12V socket is indeed blown.

I disconnected the lighter and the fuse didn't blow.

Also, the dealer installed a new clutch right before I bought it at 45k miles (the old one had started to slip).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
After waiting for 26 years, I've bought my first Porsche.
It's a 2001 996 Carrera Cab. 6 speed, sport seats, sport steering wheel, heated seats, xenons. Seal grey on black. I searched high and low for one with sport steering wheel and sport seats. Those are must haves for me!
It may not be much, but it is mine and after just one day of ownership, I love it! What a motor! So smooth and powerful. Feels great to be rolling around in a P-car.
I went through the trouble of verifying that the car is mechanically sound before purchase, but it does have a few minor niggles that I need your help with.
My cigarette lighter does not work. I thought it might just be the lighter, so I plugged in my iphone charger and it does not light up either. Nor does my tire pump.
Both of the plugs feel very loose in the socket, like it is not the right size.
I did some searching and found that this is common and earlier cars came with plus size sockets.
But how do I troubleshoot? Could it be something else? Even if it's plus size, they should still supply power right?
Should I buy a new socket as per
this post?
Should I pull it out of the dash first to see if it's been disconnected? Someone posted that once you pull it out, it's impossible to reconnect.
This post here.
Could it be a fuse? Which fuse would it be?
Please advise! Much appreciated and looking forward to the discussions ahead.
First, welcome.
My fuse blew a couple of weeks ago. I'd look at that first. It's D5 (four down, 5 from left), unless you're RHD, then it's C7.
And you need to post a pic. We tend to cut some slack for a first time post by giving help, but after that we will be merciless.
Really? You bought a Porsche?
You know what they say around here? Pics, or it didn't happen!
Welcome!
You made the right decision getting the Cab and Sports seats, it will add a lot tho the P car experience.
welcome
you seem pretty upset about this lighter thing...just dont smoke!
seriouosly, check the fuses...they are right by your left foot and there is a map inside the cover...I'm pretty sure you will be able to make sense of it. if the fuse is good then it is something else, the lighter consides of power and ground....its maybe the easieat "circuit" do diagnos...but yes a PITA to get to...but again, pretty simple in the big picture.
best of luck on it...and one more thing.... PICS !

What the hell... you guys are ****ing crazy.
Satisfied? This place is an asylum.
For those who still have their marbles, I checked the fusebox and the fuse for the 12V socket is indeed blown. I popped in another one of the '15' spares and it blew that one too.
Looks like I have a short circuit. What should be my next step? Take out the socket and inspect? The prev. owner installed a crappy Kenwood aftermarket deck -- I hate crappy aftermarket decks -- and I wonder if an idiot installer messed with the wiring. Advice?
Also, the dealer installed a new clutch right before I bought it at 45k miles (the old one had started to slip). I noticed that the engagement point is very low, close to the floor. I don't like it this low and this is not typical. He told me that as the clutch wears it will rise and most people actually complain that it is too high (sign of worn clutch). Is he totally bull****ting me or is there an adjustment anywhere? I couldn't find one in the service manual.
Thanks for your help.
WOOOWZERS!!!
she's a beauty !! thanks for the pics...really looks clean, I mean really clean!
good chance the stereo instal could be the issue. does the stereo work? also look in the socket of the lighter for anything broken or the hot lead grounded? maybe something obvious in there...other wise its time to start tracing wires
Holy cow! Grats; that car is stunning!
If you are comfortable trouble-shooting electronics and electrical problems, and I was too, I could help you, but I am not. However as your fuses blow, I would agree that your problem is in the circuit. You might want to start with a circuit diagram from the manual. If you have some sort of CPO or warranty, bring it in and check it out. Is it possible that the PO installed something in-line with the lighter? Again, would look at circuit diagram (well, I wouldn't unfortunately; I'm still learning).
That is correct.
Yes; search the boards for "clutch helper spring" and other related terms and you will likely find several posts on this topic; it's popular. I cannot help you because I am a noob.
But seriously, that's a nice car.

There is no adjustment anywhere in the hydraulics or linkages. Pushing the clutch petal moves a certain volume of fluid from the clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinderand moves the pressure plate off the clutch disk - assuming no air. Bleeding the clutch is done with a pressure source (1.5 bar) on the reservoir and the clutch petal is fully depressed carefully by hand. The bleeder is opened for at least 30 seconds. Wear would move the engagement point up near the top. Air or bent linkage arm would move the engagement point lower.
Thanks guys.
I disconnected the lighter and the fuse didn't blow. However, I got to thinking. If I disconnect the lighter, the circuit isn't complete. So doesn't that mean I haven't isolated the problem to the lighter? There could still be a short somewhere, no?
+1... what you just determined is that the wires from the fuse to the connector of the lighter is not the source of the short (wiring is OK). It is when you plug in the lighter that is causing the short.... hence a bad lighter, or a hot side of the lighter that is shorting to a ground/frame.
