Suggestion

Using any means that we normally think of (fedex ups ect) would be astronomically priced in comparison AND in the end they would just sub it out to the same company (seen it before)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, First off I am new to the forum. I recently bought a 2001 cab with a blown engine and am going to attempt to rebuild it! Just finished dropping the engine and tiptonic transmission. I forget what you call the piece still attached to the engine...but how do you remove it???

POST 2Original post

If you mean the piece on the flywheel that's the torque converter. IIRC you have to take the starter out to get to the bolts that hold it to the flywheel.

POST 3Original post

yup - remove starter...rotate engine and remove bolts as they come into view thru the hole more pics and info !

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys, that is what I was thinking, but one would think there would be an easier way! Attached is another pic, I need to resize a lot of them since they are 5mb each. Dropping the transmission and engine at the same time actually went pretty smooth. I had the red jack (in the left of the picture) under the transmission mount and the craftman professional motorcycle lift under the oil pan as shown. I referenced the OZ951 website and it helped a lot.

POST 5Original post

Don't take this the wrong way as I mean no offense! However, rebuilding the 996 engine is no beginners task and I would assume that one with enough experience to tackle such a job would know the name of the torque converter and how to remove it...

POST 6Original post

yea Tom...but then again his motor is on the floor already so there has to be some skill,...

POST 7Original post

Sorry for the hijack. But what do you think the shipping would be like for an engine to singapore?

POST 8Original post

I have shipped HUGE things to many countries from my work...the way to do it is to call a shipping company. Most the ones I know of are actually very close to the ports and you can get them to tell you. Last time I was down there we shipped an entire contrainer with our stuff secured on the inside...for us it was a major undertaking but for those guys it was just another day...it didnt even phase them and we were pissing rocks! while i was there I watched them load classic cars into a container. They didnt need engineers or scientist's to figure it out...just some guys and some wood...it was really cool to watch and they were so calm about it while most people would be pretty nervous.... and I think its pretty cheap is you can drop off / pick up right at the docks, might have to rent a small truck for a day. Using any means that we normally think of (fedex ups ect) would be astronomically priced in comparison AND in the end they would just sub it out to the same company (seen it before) here is a company I have used before: there are lots of them Sea-Pac Transport Services LLC:‎ 3544 W Marginal Way Southwest Seattle, WA 98106 [phone removed] notice they are right on the docks

Ivangene, I agree, and sometimes a less experienced person who is very carefull, reads, asks questions etc. can accomplish some pretty impressive stuff. You just never know. BUT, for everyone one of those I've seen over the last 35 years of chasing the car bug, I have seen 100+ get themselves in over their head... Just saying, as I stated, no offense meant.

POST 10Original post

agreed...I see cars come into my indy shop from time to time that the owners have "fixed" - it's really expensive to "un-fix" sometimes

POST 11Original post

At least he came to the right place for help.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

haha thanks for the vote of confidence! I don't have too much money into the car and am a mechanical engineer, so I am not too worried. I have been reading up the last 6 months or so. Looked that the "986fix" videos on youtube a few times and read 101 project for boxster. Worst case I mess this engine up, sell the parts on ebay and buy a new one from Porsche for $13k. I haven't really done any work on an automatic cars....never really had much interest....it would be nice to change this one over to 6spd, but I think that would be a horrible waste of time and money.

POST 13Original post

Great plan - I am sure you will do fine. As a fellow Engineer that has taken on projects way bigger then the norm, I applaud you. The hard part was to design and build it the first time - fixing it has been done many times and is documented (as you mentioned) many ways. Best of Luck and keep us up to date.

POST 14Original post

Make sure you pin the converter correctly when you put the transmission back in the car. Several Tips have been ruined by skipping this important step.

Stephen, Can you elaborate on this please? I am going to be pulling my engine and tip in a month or two... thanks!
