One interesting side effect of the coolant change that came with the coolant tank replacement (They did a full coolant flush - apparently the old coolant I had in there is no longer used/recommended): The car now takes forever to reach 180deg.

If you're not getting coolant leak from the cap, you should be OK, but the upgraded cap basically has some additional design ( re: plastic ) change underneath to prevent pressure from getting direct to the rubber seal.

The Tip fluid was pretty dark @ 55K miles and 8 years of 'stop and go' traffic, and the transmission wasn't as responsive - gear changes were a tad slow...

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The Tip fluid was pretty dark @ 55K miles and 8 years of 'stop and go' traffic, and the transmission wasn't as responsive - gear changes were a tad slow... Changing out the fluid has made a HUGE difference - much snappier gear changes.
Originally thought of as a RMS leak - turns out it was a crack in the base of the oil filler tube that also made the engine run very rich when cold. What a difference changing that has made....
And of course expansion tank finally changed out.
Great experience so far with Herb Chamber Porsche...(no affiliation)
Why did I go to the dealer and not an independent? Well I actually got a couple of quotes from local indy's and they were about the same as what the dealer was charging...one quoted me $200 more for the coolant tank replacement - and no loaner car! (they gave me a cute 335i to play with).
Good for you, nice to 'feel' the improvements. Glad to hear of a positive dealer experience. I've seen Herb Chambers on the car show Chasing Classic Cars.
One interesting side effect of the coolant change that came with the coolant tank replacement (They did a full coolant flush - apparently the old coolant I had in there is no longer used/recommended): The car now takes forever to reach 180deg. Before it would reach 180 within about 8 mins of driving in traffic. It now takes like 20 mins! My commute is 12mins!!! So is it true I cannot rev over 3K as long as coolant is not yet at 180? why is the 997 marked at 175 degrees (even the Mk1 997)
Yea, looks in the pic that you have the older gen cap. If you're not getting coolant leak from the cap, you should be OK, but the upgraded cap basically has some additional design ( re: plastic ) change underneath to prevent pressure from getting direct to the rubber seal. wholesale ( maybe sunset or suncoast is like $15 or so).
my tank looks like the original, it's just doing fine, but I'm anxious to git r done along with a coolant flush.
If you figure out how to get those stickers off your oil filler tube let me know how you did it.
Mine broke and I had to change it about 3 weeks ago and I can not get my stickers off.
WD40. Spray it into a jar and then use a small brush, (don't let it hit other areas) and let it soak for a few minutes and then scratch away with your fingernail. You might have to re-apply a few times but it will take the paper and gum off. Just don't use anything sharp or you'll have scratches on the surface. And for god's sake don't get WD40 on the belts or let the sticker debris fall everywhere.
hmm...I am guessing they reused my old cap - that the new expansion tank doesn't automatically come with the cap...
Might as well buy the upgraded cap....
But yes, changing out 8 year old coolant seems to have made a huge difference in cooling...
yep, must reach full temp before you can rev pass 3500.... you dont want to lug the car either.
The 175 marker on the 997 is purely pshychological.... so people wont feel that the engine is not running to hot.... the better more accurate temp gauge is on the temp control on the center console.
I would be suspect of your thermostst, or possibly they didn't evacuate all the air out of the system. 20 minutes of driving time is not right to reach 180 even in freezing temps, even for a brand new car. I'd tell the dlr service manager to have a look.
Yeah, something is not Kosher. Don't air bubbles usually cause the vehicle to run hot?
Sound like the thermostat is stuck part of the way open. Shouldn't take 20 minutes.
I can get to 180 in 5 minutes of driving (after a 2 minute start up).
well just a quick update.
Today is 86 degrees (last few days was 72) and the car warms up to 180 in 6 to 8 mins of driving.
I also noticed that if I drive it at 3K RPM for a couple minutes it gets to 180 within 6 mins.
Baby it around town at 1-2K RPM and it takes forever to get to 180...
