Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was looking through regular service intervals and noticed that power steering fluid is only mentioned as "inspect and top off" but I don't remember seeing instructions to flush the fluid completely. Is this something we just don't do in our cars? If so, how is it done?

POST 2Original post

I have never heard of anyone ever flushing that system. I would venture to say that when and if you swap out the steering rack on that car down the road sometime that would be the opportunity to flush the system. That's when I have done it.

POST 3Original post

I don't think a flush is required for the power steering fluid regardless of miles. When checking the fluid level, should you screw the cap back in or simply push it in so that it's seated on the threads(ready to be screwed in)? I've checked mine a few times and it seems that I get a different reading each time. Could this be the reason why? Thanks.

POST 4Original post

Use a baster and suck out the reservoir and refill. Do that a couple of times and you will clean up the fluid quite easily.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just thought that like the oil in the car that this should be replaced at regular intervals. But I guess it's a "lifetime" fluid like the coolant? Strange...

POST 6Original post

Read the maintenance manual. There is no discussion about replacing the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) which is what that stuff is.
