Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was wondering what is the function of the ugly rear bumper guard and how can I remove them?
One of the rear bumper guards on my 996 has a small cracked and thinking to either remove them all or replace it.
I noticed on the European 996s that they do not have the bumper guards. This is probably due to the size of the Euopean license plate. It is probably an American market add on for our smaller license plates
The bumperettes are there to cover two braces which are impact absorbing braces. The braces are required to pass the US DOT 5 mph crash test, which is to help minimize damage to the car at low speed impacts. Those braces can be removed. You will have to get a euro bumper cover, or have a shop patch your current bumper cover.
The the bumperettes can be removed. You can remove them by taking off the rear bumper cover and then detatching the bumperetts from the bumper cover. I think on earlier models, a screw/bolt is accessable from the bottom of the bumperette.
You can also have them painted to match your bumper. Try

and they'll help you out. I think they look good painted, especailly on lighter colored cars. See Tim's avatar for an example.
Painting them is a good way to go if you still want to protect your rear bumper. The euro style bumpers and IIRC GT2 or GT3 rears I have seen do not have bumperettes, it's just a wide open area. I'm sure a shop can patch up the holes / respray where your bumperettes mount up; that would cost somewhere between painted bumperettes and a whole new rear bumper.. GL.
The bumper will have holes that will need to be filled after removing the bumperettes. Be sure to plastic weld the same type of plastic to assure the expansion and contraction are the same. Here's a link to what mine looks like:

Think about this seriously before you act. They are there to reduce costs from minor impacts. I would much rather replace one or two small bumperettes than the entire rear bumper. They are easy to replace. I wrote a tutorial about it and it is on the 997 forum.

I have the black (unpainted) bumper guards on the rear of my '99. Do I like them? You bet I do! Last year, I backed into a tree at a low speed. The contact point for my car was the bumper guard. The scratches buffed out easily, with the help of an "armor all like" product, and the bumper cover itself suffered no damage.
Without the bumper guards, the bumper cover would have been damaged and would have required a partial repaint (at a minimum). Had the bumper guard been painted either by the factory or bumperplugs, then I would have had the expense of having it repainted again.
I'm a fan of the bumper guards and agree with Edgy entirely.
(By the way.....nice tutorial, Edgy)
