Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't want to plug it into the cigarette lighter. I cut the CLA plug off the end, its 2 wires a red and a white. I put 12V to the red and put the white to a ground - NOTHING. I tested it with a test light and the power is there. I spliced the CLA plug back on, plugged it into the lighter 12V and it turns on. What am I doing wrong?

POST 2Original post

Ground on the car is not white it's brown.. You might also want to tap it at the mobile phone option plug under the radio..

POST 3Original post

mobile phone plug under the radio interesting.. any picture of that ? what can be done with that plug ? only power or more ? what radio are we talking about ? CDR-23 ?

POST 4Original post

it allows for a switched 12volt as the cig lighter power is constant... i'll try and get a pic of that... its a four wire plug taped up under the center console under the radio...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know grounds on the car are brown. The Tom Tom iPhone Nav power cord has a red and WHITE. I'm assuming the red is hot and white is ground. Set it up that way by getting 12v from fuse panel and a good ground. It would not power up. Hooked it back to the PLUG IN and inserted it into the lighter socket and it powered up just fine. Puzzled?

POST 6Original post

white will usually not be ground... it may be a turn on.. red will be a +12v and white is probably a switched 12v when the ignition is turned.. try connecting both wires to the 12v and it will probably work... just my thought...

POST 7Original post

The TomTom cigarette lighter "plug" is reducing the 12volts down to 5volts. It should say what the output of the plug is on it. The easiest method would be to buy a female lighter socket from Radio Shack, and wire it to the switched power source near the shifter under the console. Then plug the TomTom into the new female connector.
