Suggestion
The car battery version is just ASKING for a high current run through your wrench or socket, if you accidentally go to ground while installing the hot lead to the new battery, or if it's just hanging there.

Suggestion
While I like the idea of the 9VDC setting retainer, (easy, portabale, what it's designed for, & cheap), I'd not likely use either another car battery with jumper cables, or any type of charger or "dead battery" booster from strickly a safety standpoint.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know I've read this somewhere, but none of my searches are pulling up the threads I need.
I might have to replace the battery in my '03 Cab. If I pull it, what do I lose?
All I can remember is seat memory and the radio unlock codes (& stations?), but what else could be lost, and more importantly, difficult to 'fix'?
Thanks.

I replaced my battery a couple of weeks ago with a new one from Autozone. They have a device there that connects a 9 volt battery to your cigarette lighter socket and will retain all memory functions while you disconnect the battery. The cost was $4.99 including the battery. It was a no brainer. And it worked perfectly.
The guy at the counter had never heard of this device and tried to tell me it didn't exist. I insisted he check with the manager. Sure enough, there it was on the shelf.
Hot Damn ! I was thinking " if this is such a big deal, why not just run jumper cables from a good battery while you do the swap... same idea, but much easier, and for $5, how can you say NO to more cool tools ! ! !

has a picture and info.. nice idea
Seat memory doesn't reset. Just the Radio, power windows and sunroof. As well as the engine controller resets and has to learn the best gas/o2 mixture.
The only thing you need to do is put in the radio code and close the windows and sunroof once and everything is fine. Take a about 10 min of driving for the controller to program.

The car battery version is just ASKING for a high current run through your wrench or socket, if you accidentally go to ground while installing the hot lead to the new battery, or if it's just hanging there. Worst case, a direct short might cause the battery to spew acid. The battery maintainer is only usually 1.25A so pretty safe, but still a nice jolt. I'd fear damaging the maintainer. Besides, your DME could always use a hard reset once in a while!

Since your car is an '03, you should not have to enter the radio code. It is programmed into the DME in '03 + 996 cars and the radio should become operable after the battery install. However, you probably will lose the preset station selections.
A little over a year ago I replaced the battery in my 996. I went to Autozone and got he Duralast 48-DL (vented) for about $80.
Thanks for all the good info, especially about not having to worry about the radio code (I'll grab the serial number just in case).
I finally got under the hood tonight and measured the battery. First off, it's an Interstate, so I won't feel bad getting rid of an original Porsche part
It measured 11.57V, below the "open-circuit at full discharge voltage" of 11.8V, so I'm certain that the battery needs replacing.
My question now is, do I need to replace it "right now" or can I wait until we get back from vacation on the 22nd? I could try to charge it a little, assuming it will take a charge.
