Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In another thread, someone mentioned that he didn't intend to use the car as a DD when he bought it, but started to, and he's happy he did.
I bought my 996 specifically because I wanted it as a daily driver.
Where do other people fall on the spectrum?
I use to drive it more than I do now. I would get a thrill in it even if I was just going to a 7-11. As time went by though, I started to realize I would only have real fun when I was driving fast on twisty roads. I don't get that opportunity very often, which is one reason I like going on the runs with other owners. DE is in my future I think.
No - just weekends, long trips without the kids, and DEs. I'd like to drive it more but my commute is just 2 miles each way. In cold weather, the engine doesn't even get to normal operating temperature by the time I get to work.
I bought mine as a daily driver for 4-season Colorado driving. Separate wheels/tires for winter/summer makes it easy. With depreciation and insurance costs, you can't afford NOT to drive these 996's on a regular basis.
I bought mine for those "special days" when the weather is perfect and I have on nice shiny shoes and I am taking the wife to go have a coffee in my all shined up Porsche !! NO WAY was I going to drive it to work or other "normal tasks"
The realized - I'm never going to drive it...
BS ! ! I am driving it everyday I can, some days I shouldn't and everytime the is no real reason not to.. (like skiing with 5 kids and stuff!)
For sure I have put WAY more miles on than I planned and WAY less than I would have liked to so far ! ! !
So why DON'T you drive your car much?
You spent all that money just to look at it in the garage - lost tens of thousands of dollars in depreciation and continuing to fall, and you'd rather see a low odometer than feel the rush of driving an amazing car? It's funny sometimes to see the comments you and others make about this, but at the same time, it's just baffeling..
Daily driver with snows for the winter. Reminds me of an incident a few years back when I had my 964 C-4 (also a DD):
As I was walking into my building and a fellow walking behind me said with scorn, "You don't get here any faster than I do with that car." I paused, turned around and replied, "Nope, but I sure have a better time with the trip"!
Walked into work smiling.........
bought mine as a daily driver. my thinking is that my 996 is not an exotic. it was meant to be driven. rain, sun, sleet, snow, it's all good. i figure if i have to drive anyway, why not make it a great experience?
+1 Big Time - You must be my brother from another mother...
That's exactly the plan I had... no more than a couple days a week to work, then weekends to breakfast... but, I just can't help myself... the 996 lives in the garage, the truck out on the curb... and since I leave for work through the garage to keep the noise down (at 4:30 in the morning), it's hard to walk by it on the way to the truck... so I gave up and it really became my DD... of course the wife remembered the original plan and complained that she didn't get to drive it "once in awhile..."
Anyway, it's coming up on four weeks in the body shop and I'm really in need of a fix... I do visit it a couple of times a week and fortunately the body shop owner doesn't mind... in fact, he's almost as excited as I am when he reviews what has been done since my last visit... side rockers have been fitted, the rear turbo-look bumper cover has been fitted (holes cut for the license plate lights, bumperettes will be placed slightly wider apart and painted)... the front turbo-look bumper cover needs some final touches... maybe... maybe next week... but it's killing me waiting for it and the best I can do is hang out in these online forums, pining away...

It's great that so many people drive the stink out of these cars. If nothing else, we are people that are *just* a little happier every day.
I've been driving mine daily for over a 18 months, and even if I have a crappy day at work and get out late, I still smile when I see my car and look forward to the drive home.
trouble is, they are so damn fun to drive and look so freeking awesome too !
We had black ice this morning and I had a wash out in the ars around one turn, the car communicates so well that it wasnt even an issue and I drove right out of harms way...(slightly drifting for fun) I know if I was in my suburban in 2WD I would have been in trouble for sure!! By the time you know something is going wrong, that weight is way over the line and not coming back in that thing!! In 4WD its better, but still no communication with the driver
No, I've got my Audi as my DD, which I'm going to driving till it dies. Currently has 160K miles.
One of the
other
reasons I don't drive mine is the perception (I've seen this on other threads). I'm a middle school math teacher (I'm a career changer) and with the economy the way it is, the union contract up for negotiation this year and the state cutting our budgets, people can get the wrong impression (also SY stands out a bit more than other colors). Unfortunately, most people don't know my story and therefore make assumptions they are paying teachers way too much and that's why there taxes are high.... etc.
Not a daily driver - but it's out every weekend without fail, and often during the week when I'm not travelling. I have a company car and I drive lots of miles - approx. 45K a year. I also have a wife and 3 kids and 2 dogs. As a results, the 996 is purely for my enjoyment.
+1 on managing perception, too. My clients don't understand or appreciate how affordable a 10 yr old 996 has become - they only assume that their franchisor is getting rich off of their franchise fees. It isn't worth debating them because the risk is that their misperception could really hurt my ability to influence their decisions - the core of my job. So, I have my fun on my personal time with my buddies who have the same interest. It's awesome.
Why am I saying all this? For those who say to us weekend drivers that we're crazy not to drive it everyday, you need to stop and think. The world isn't that black & white. God bless you for driving yours everyday. I did that with my 951 for almost 5 years, and it was awesome. But, I don't judge people who don't.
Bob
Didnt intend for it to be my daily. I had a BMW 530 lease for my daily and purchased this for my toy. Wife didnt like the idea of me having a car for a toy so I had to buy her a 993. Lease ended on the 530 and I find myself driving the 996 more than I anticipated. It sure does beat driving the 99 4runner that was supposed to take over DD duties
If and when I am able to get back into a Porsche, I am going to buy Phil's car. I'll drive it every and put 15,000 miles on it per year! I'll also post the mileage progress each month.
If you think Phil's therapist currently has a difficult task trying to get him to drive his car, wait until Phil sees those mileage numbers on a monthly basis! He could end up in a straight jacket!! Plus, Phil's therapist could afford to buy that 40 acre estate on Aruba.
Not so much, she literally put under 600 miles on it in 7 mos including a trip to Charlotte and back. Turns out that a 993 is not ergonomically fitting for a preganant womans anatomy
I bought mine as a fair weather/weekend/Autocross/DE car. I do drive it on nice days to work on occasion. Most of the time I drive my Grand Cherokee as it's easy and comfortable to drive slowly. I find when I drive the P car, I have a very strong urge to take the long twisty way home. Problem is, in DC metro traffic, I'm usually traveling at no more than 25mph. DC traffic can be too frustrating to drive the 911.
LJPete - I lived in the DC area for 30 years, and every time I go back I'm disheartened by the traffic. Do you ever head out to Great Falls? I seem to recall some great, scenic roads out that way. I'm sure there are some great but short roads out toward Travilah, MD.
In any case, I hope to get my '99 996 aero out there sometime soon to drive those roads on a weekend, when there's less traffic.
Bob
I only planned on driving mine during the weekends. Now it's a DD! I've never enjoyed driving a car this much. My commute typically consists of miles of twisties then several miles of wide open speeds. It's not until I'm 3 miles from DC do I encounter the stop and go traffic, however, the commute home is much more mundane.
Bought a tiptronic to be able to drive in traffic (with the sport exhaust) and it is as bullet proof as prior 911 DDs. Handling is very tight and its very comfortable. 996 is more comfortable than 87. The 87 has been in use a lot more recently in an effort to avoid its Pirellis getting too old with out being able to enjoy them. Ran them to Sebring last Sunday. Well I have enjoyed them all right
Regards,
DD. Coming from a Jeep Wrangler (which i still have for my off-road adventures) to a car I've wanted since I was about 3' tall, I drive it often. Got it at 47k miles and now at 67k since July '07. Besides, I get better gas mileage and with the long straight stretch of roads on my way to work, every mile is an experience.
With great power comes great responsibility!
I don't really commute, but I definitely bought specifically as a primary vehicle, figured it would be astoundingly reliable and livable relative to other sports cars, and so far it has been! We do have some sedans as well, but aside from this winter and/or heavy weather I find I drive the Porsche 90% of the time or more.
I was probably the opposite of most here: traded in my BMW 750 (E38) for my 01 C2 Cab and drove it daily for almost a year...then bought a 08 Rover Sport SC that I drive on "bad weather days"
Small world. I take almost that route, usually cut off after the American Legion bridge to Clara Barton Pkwy to McCarthur (Through Great falls) to Falls road. From there it depends on the traffic, I might turn off at River Road or Glen for some less populated twisty roads. Makes for driving home a bit more pleasurable.
Until you get behind the dope doing 20mph.
DD from day 1; it's weird, I actually look forward to the commute now! I'd hoped to get enough from selling my old car to buy a new set of tires for the Porsche...
Had it on the track not one day after I got temp tags, too!
