Clutch, new plastic fenderwell piece, center console hinge replacement, new lighter, sunroof lube, coolant canister replacement, new ignition switch (the a/c won't come on unless you jiggle the key after starting, so complete ignition housing has to be replaced for faulty spring mechanism), windshield washer sprayers realignment, alignment, and oil change.

Suggestion

I think it's about $130 and you can replace it yourself, the light will need to be reset at the dealer....can't remember if unplugging the battery will reset it or not but it will definitely require resetting the radio code so have that handy or it won't work.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I am a new owner of a 1999 996 with 37K miles, this is my first P-car and I love every min of it. I love this forum keep up the good work guys!! I use to have a 04 Subie Sti it's a boxer motor also and I find that the oil comsumption are higher on this type of set-up is that right? Is there anything I need to look out for? I already have the air bag light on which I heard is common

POST 2Original post

Hi and welcome. Most common problem (or most talked about anyway) is the RMS. Do a search and you'll find tons about this. Don't let it scare you though - really not that bad. Would you mind giving us (me anyway) a first hand comparison of the sti to the 996. I have always been interested in that car. Not my cup of tea for style but that wouldn't stop me from buying one. They seem like awesome cars. How are you liking the 911 so far?

POST 3Original post

Another Newbie!!! Welcome to the board! and where are the required pictures? hahah

POST 4Original post

Whuddup. '99 996 owner here, too. Just hit 70k miles in mine. Bought it at 50k. Can say, through the last 20k miles, that this is what you can expect.... Every 12,000 (+) miles you have to replace rear tires (about 800.00 for the PS2's). At roughly 60k miles you'll have to get yer clutch replaced. (about 1,400.00 from dealer). I just dropped my car off at the dealer and am looking at $3000.00 for the following work... Just wanted to give you a heads up on what problems you might occur. (Besides, of course, the plastic fenderwell piece and alignment which was needed because of a blowout).

POST 5Original post

what he said...wheres the pics...and welcome aboard

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the warm welcome. I will have the pictures up soon, the car is in the shop for stereo because some numb nut stole the face plate when it was in transport. 7sport- The Sti is different in respect to power and handling. I have tested many cars before I got the 996 they include the M3 with SMG, C32, and G35 nothing gave me the feel of what the Sti gave me in acceleration and handling. Only the 996 had what I needed interms of fun driving. I sold my Sti due to the high oil comsumption I was the only owner and the break-in was done right but I lost almost a qt. of oil between the first oil change at 1500 miles!!! Mybe it was just my Sti not sure and the tranny was not top off all the way. What is RMS? Oh btw: Can someone tell me what's the name of the color I have it's dark purple

POST 7Original post

Welcome to the board. I bought my first P-car back in March, so I'm still learning new things myself. The most common problems from what I've seen are the following: 1 - RMS leaking. Depending on who you talk to, adding oil is ok as long as the leak isn't too bad. 2 - Coolant tank on the '99 has a tendency to crack. Mine was replaced when I got my car. 3 - Airbag light due to corroded seatbelt contacts/wiring harness. Mine was replaced when I got my car. 4 - Window regulator (rolls window down halfway when locking car) Its random from what I've heard 5 - Tire wear, especially the rear. The Porsche spec for the alignment wears out the rea tires pretty quick - Richard

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is the dash oil reader accurate? When you turn the key to the on position but don't crank it there is a oil meter on the dash near the clock is that thing accurate? I sometimes see it's lower and sometimes it higher

POST 10Original post

Yes, it's acurate, at least suppose to be. The level will depend on how recently the car has been driven, as well as your parking position. I generally check mine in the morning before turning the car over for thhe first time.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I do that also to be on the safe side

POST 14Original post

Welcome to the crazy house Eddie!... and conrgats on your P-cap purchase. I know others have already said it and I know your car is getting a face (plate) job, but... I just have to say this... PICS...PICS.... we love PICS... no, we NEED PICS!!!

POST 16Original post

For all you '99 C2 owners... how reliable has your car been over the months, years you've owned it?

POST 17Original post

Welcome. I've owned my 99 for 3 years. I've had a couple of minor problems but overall a great daily driver. I have over 47k miles on the car and have spent a max of $1k in repairs. The rear tires do go quick (avg 11k miles) and annual maintence/ service at the dealership is expensive but its worth every penny....drive it and have fun

POST 18Original post

Congrats on the new car! Let the mods begin now I have a '99 and haven't had any major issues. If it hasn't already been replaced, the common problems will be ignition switch and coolant tank cracking on '99. I had both of these fixed under warranty. At this point in your '99s life both of these issues have probably already been addressed so I wouldn't be too concerned. Enjoy the car!

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank guys, again it's raining and no pictures yet. I will get it up soon I have a problem, and please don't take this the wrong way I still love my C2, but to as I was driving my check engine light came on Is there any reader I can get to check what is happened? I know lately there has been some bad gas in our state ( WA ) which that might caused it but I will bring it in to the shop monday

POST 20Original post

Speaking of bad gas....I had taco bell the other day....

POST 21Original post

Kirby - Most guys think the term "E-gas" means electronic throttle control, but what it REALLY stands for is "Emitted-gas!" Man, that stuff can be lethal!

POST 22Original post

Eddie, best of luck to you I also I have 99, purchased this past March, Great car, Great time... Have fun! Rick

POST 23Original post

I picked up a 99 about four weeks ago from a dealer. Got a 2yr warranty and so far all is well. I have aready put about 900 miles on it eventhough it is not a daily driver!! I read the postings here frequently and just hope for the best. Good luck with yours!

POST 24Original post

Eddie, welcome to the world of Porsche ownership. Sounds like you're already up for the standard P-car experience (ie, a lotta little crap breaking on ya!). The check engine light is most likely due to the MAF sensor that you can see on the airbox when you open the engine cover. I think it's about $130 and you can replace it yourself, the light will need to be reset at the dealer....can't remember if unplugging the battery will reset it or not but it will definitely require resetting the radio code so have that handy or it won't work. Do a search for 'check engine light' on the forum, or for any of the other problems you're likely to get. I enjoy mine but all the little crap that breaks is completely ridiculous on a >$60k car. Glad I didn't buy new.

POST 25Original post

Is a February '98 build date 911 subject to the early recalls? What should I look out for? The one I'm looking at has 33K miles.

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are some pictures of my 996 in the garage I will try to get some better pictures of the car, btw: what color is my 996 called? I am waiting for my Litronics and euro tail lights hopefully I get them this Thursday TIA

POST 28Original post

Eddie, It's hard to tell with the flash in the photo but it looks to me like Vesuvio Metallic. Check the option code sticker in the inside of the trunk lid to be sure. Litronics and the clear tail lights would definitely improve the look. Congrats on your new car and enjoy!

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you , I love the car but I got a check engine light, it's goping into the shop this week

POST 30Original post

Sorry, I meant Vesuvio Metallic (Viola Metallic is a Boxster color). Here's a nice picture of a Vesuvio Metallic 996: https://rennlist.com/forums/showpost...81&postcount=3 Yeah, have the code read by the dealer. Hopefully it is something minor.

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup that's the color. What code did your 996 throw? Thanks

POST 32Original post

I don't remember the code. It was minor -- emissions related. It was within spec though so the dealer just reset the computer. No charge.
