all my adult life, and the costs you are starting out with would run me right out of the Porsche owning business.

Can`t use all 400hp in that...it makes the wheels fall off.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Its a 01 911 C4 Cab. First time 911 owner, long time drooler.
Flew from Nebraska to CA to pick it up...drove it down Highway 1 to get to Vegas. Hows that for an inaugral drive? Unbelievable. Its on rails. Its like butter.
Early 70`s 911 on the Highway with me...played with him for a few miles till i decided to smoke him. Did wave though. Crushed a Mustang. I just cannot believe how this thing hangs on in the corners. If anything, and this suprised me, mild understeer when it was really pushed. I guess i was expecting crazy oversteer ala TVR because of rear weight bias...but maybe thats the AWD and PSM doing its thing. My only problem is it inspired a little too much confidence!
Previous sports car experiences limited to older TVRs (I have a 2500M with a
V8 in it) which are hairy at best and continually feel like u are on the edge
of the handling! Can`t use all 400hp in that...it makes the wheels fall off. Averaged 95-100mph from Barstow to Vegas I cannot believe how smooth and solid even at those speeds with the top down. I got burnt to hell...but so much fun.
So, I drove 600 miles in one day, dropped of at Vegas dealer for a 45 k service and various other bits and bobs that were obvious during the drive. Ill be back in vegas next week to get it and drive it the rest of the way to NE thru the rockies. Want it good to go for the last 1200 miles.
Now for the second part of Porsche ownership inauguration. Opening my wallet to the dealer. Its just out of warranty BTW. I notice tiny tiny coolant smell
and rattling exhaust at idle. No oil drips on garage floor where it was stored
for 3 weeks prior to my pick up. However, dealer reckons there are two leaks...valve cover and RSM.
Top replacement (already knew that was coming) $5000. Price paid accounted for it.
RSM (done only 3 months ago by previous owner. He got new clutch, flywheel and transmission at same time, so im OK there) $?800?
coolant tank $700
valve cover $700
seat switch/wire $750
left cat replacement $warranty
additional key $400
detail $300
mats $??
Welcome to Porsche.
Am i seeing a pattern here? $700 just for the machanic to cough. I know Ill be working on this one myself a little LOL.
About an 8000 dollar service after a few other things too i reckon.
For some weird reason they are doing the cat as a warranty. Suppose the service manage felt bad for me or something? Im trying to see if they will cover the RSM too as MyPorsche in Monterey just did it under warranty 3 months ago. I know...I`m dreaming. I`m a little concerned they may say the engine is whacked out causing RSM problems. Whats a rebuilt? $5-10,000?
I`m also plane guy (Glasair III, N-2Yt) where my last rebuild was just over $30k so as long as it doesn`t get that crazy.
Looking forward to my drive home next week. Just thought I`d join this group and say hi. I should have bought one of these years ago. Oh yeh...thats right...couldn`t afford it a few years ago!

My foray into aviation ownership a few years back has completely numbed my sensitivity to parts/service costs. Its kind of funny how I don`t really care if the engine did go bang in the car...I save all that worry for when\if the engine goes bang in the plane while im flying it (or rather I`d be dropping rapidly at that point).
Leedav: What are they holding when they cough? Apparently me by my short and curlies...
Can`t wait to go get it again. Didn`t fill in the rest of the story yet. This is *meant* to be an aniversary present for my wife next week. She knows nothing about it. We are going to Vegas for aniversary etc. Of course, we all know who its REALLY for. Heheheheheh. With a little luck she`;ll hate driving it and just want jewelry or something. With worse luck she`ll love it and won`t let me drive it

Not likelly. Before we got the 996 my wife cared little for any of my other p-cars. After driving the 996 she couldn't stop oohing and ahhing, about how civilized the car is, how well it handles around turns, etc, etc, etc...Even my mother in-law likes car
Congrats and welcome, great looking car.
As far as the wife hating it, think again.
Now that you've got a taste of p-car ownership,
starting planning on what model you're going to
buy for YOUR car. A Turbo or GT3, maybe. Enjoy!
Wow. I'm 6 months into a second hand 00 Cab, and the maint costs you were quoted are WAAAY beyond what I have experienced.
New top: $3500 OEM installed, or $1900 after market (at shop recommended by dealer).
Additional key: $50 for remote head on ebay; $80 for cut key @ Sunset Porsche (mail order); $49 to program car at Hennesy Porsche in Atlanta.
Electric Seat sw. $25 on ebay right now. How much labor can it be?
First detail: when I stopped by, proud as a peacock, to buy a hard top removal tool at Ellis Porsche in Atlanta, they offered complete first detail for under $100 .... as good will gesture, I imagine.
I've been involved with airplanes, too .... all my adult life, and the costs you are starting out with would run me right out of the Porsche owning business. Fortunately, having been at it for 17 years, I know those quotes are a rip off.
