Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just replaced the factory 4-spoke in my '99 with a 3-spoke from Gert using the DIY instructions.

Suggestion
If the battery is hooked up and you disconnect the air bag with the key on the air bag light will go on because the system thinks there is a fault.

Suggestion
Key is making sure you waiting long enough after disconnecting your battery to let ALL the charge drain from the airbags (1/2 or so will do).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just replaced the factory 4-spoke in my '99 with a 3-spoke from Gert using the DIY instructions. I followed the DIY step by step on the two connectors to the wheel, and one to the airbag. No drama to the replacement other than the inordinate amount of torque needed to loosen the T30 torx screws. Except now the airbag light comes on and stays on whenever I fire up the engine. Is there something I need to reset after the install, or does this indicate the airbag unit has malfunctioned? Did I miss a step somewhere? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Let's see...I probably did. I had the key in the ignition at various times during the install so I can unlock and rotate the steering wheel to access the torx screws. I didn't know how else to access the screws, was this a no-no?
So I'll need to have the dealer reset the warning light, as suggested by Ekename?
Yup....dealer has to reset the light. Not something that an OBD2 scanner can do (they just do CEL). The key near the ignition is not a factor as long as the battery is disconnected. Key is making sure you waiting long enough after disconnecting your battery to let ALL the charge drain from the airbags (1/2 or so will do). The other problem you may have is when you reinstalled the airbag the sensors weren't attached firmly. Either way, it is a dealer reset now.
Oh the joys of learning from DIY mistakes

Go to your dealer and play dumb and have them turn it off. You cannot turn it off yourself.
I didn't realize the battery was hooked up when he disconnected it. Was it? But, either way, take the advice of TP and play dumb and get the dealer to reset it.
