But I remember when my Boxster's passenger side VarioCam solenoid (and as it turned out the actuator too) failed the engine suddenly developed a very rough running condition and would barely idle.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Was running at Hallett this past weekend and coming down the front straight right before turn 1 I noticed that my check engine light was flashing. So I threw my emergency flashers on and started to decelerate. As soon as I rounded turn 1 the car started to shake, and then made a noise that sounded like a chain slapping and started loosing power rapidly. I killed the motor and pulled off to the side of the track. Haven't gotten a chance to open it up yet but these are the codes it threw. I'm hopping for the best...completely ruined motor...err wait, guess that's the worst, but I doubt there is a best. Anyone have any input, or a spare engine? moduleType = MotronicDME78 DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P1531 Description:Unknown DTC: 1531 DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P1123 Description:Unknown DTC: 1123 DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P1125 Description:Porsche fault code 357 - Oxygen sensing adaption Repair Infomation:upper load range bank 1 DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P0300 Description:Porsche fault code 507 - Misfire detection Repair Infomation total) DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P0301 Description:Porsche fault code 508 - Misfire cylinder 1 DTC Count = 6 Fault Number:P0304 Description:Porsche fault code 511 - Misfire cylinder 4 The engine is a 99 3.4L with about 65k miles on it and does have the LN engineering IMS bearing.

POST 3Original post

Sounds like it jumped time. Ims or chain tensioner IMO.... Be strange if the LN bearing failed; you'd be the first....

POST 4Original post

chain skipped? cam pad snapped in two? guide rail snapped in two? valve bent? d-chunk? LN IMS retrofit gone bad?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The ln retrofit was installed just about 1yr ago at 55k miles. My guess at the moment it snapped chain tensioner.

POST 6Original post

Best case a spark plug came lose or the air intake disconnected. Worst case.......F that.

Well, it does sound serious, especially with the engine's behavior at the end along with the noise. But I remember when my Boxster's passenger side VarioCam solenoid (and as it turned out the actuator too) failed the engine suddenly developed a very rough running condition and would barely idle. I can't remember hearing any scary noises though but with the engine rpms rising and falling almost to the point the engine felt like it was going to die this drop in rpms results in a drop in oil pressure and different engines have different oil pressure budgets. That is one engine may remain prefectly quiet with under 1 bar of oil pressure while another may rattle like its brains are coming out the exhaust pipe. Do not run the engine. Remove the oil filter housing and look at the oil and filter element. If there's any mechanical failure in the cam chain drives/tensioners, etc. you'll know it from what you see in the oil. If the oil's clear/clean and so's the filter... my WAG then would be the VarioCam actuator (or solenoid) on both banks 1 and 2 failed. The misfires were from the DME trying to compensate for the failure. If the filter oil and filter are free of scary metal bits then before you scrap the motor or rebuild it I'd suggest if you can attempt to confirm the actuator or solenoid are not bad, are working ok. Now I grant you it is rare that both would fail at the same time so the fact the engine's been swapped suggests to me there might be an electrical connection that's come lose or some other common failure point that affects both banks simultaneously. Sincerely, Macster.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Macster, good ideas on the variocam issue. Although the car noted missfires on both banks, it only noted a timing issue on one bank so possibly the other bank was getting screwed with thanks to erratic air intake on the offending bank. As for noises, this motor always makes a ton of oil on start up prior to getting full oil pressure so maybe the noise was pressure related. It'll probably be a week or two, but as soon as I get a chance I'll jump into there and see what I can find. At least now I have some hope that it may not be entirely mulched.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alright, pulled the oil filter and drained the engine oil today. Filter canister had a large amount of metal sludge. Possibly some plastic or something in there too. The magnetic drain bolt looks like Einsteins hair. Tons of fine metal and several large (in my opinion) metal flakes/shavings. The oil only has something like 300 miles on it so this is not normal/okay. Engine still turns over 360 degrees by hand and feels to have compression. At this point it looks like I'm going to wait till this fall after I move and get a chance to settle in so I can pull the motor out of the car so I have plenty of room to work on it. Hopefully I can open it up and finding something non-fatal wrong with it (i know, wishful thinking on my part). I'll keep ya'll posted once I crack it open. The picture of the metal flakes in the oil is from about half of the oil that came out of just the oil filter. I poured the other half of the filter oil into a plastic bottle and saved it.

POST 10Original post

I'm with you on it doesn't look good. What's got me is the engine turning over by hand. If this is with the plugs removed never mind my mentioning it. But if it is turning over with the plugs in and not any tough spots I'm thinking the valves took damage keeping compression cycles from causing tough spots. Good luck on things working out. We are all hoping the best.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It was with spark plugs in. But, trust me, it wasn't easy. Had to use two open end wrenches piggyback to get it past compression strokes on each cylinder

POST 13Original post

That engine looks to be sick. Best to leave it alone until you have the time to remove the engine from the car and tear the engine down to make a proper evaluation of the engine's condition and its suitability for repair or replacement. Regardless, any more running the engine, even turning it over by hand, can only make things worse. Note to all you magnetic drain plug fans... how tenative even just a bit of ferrous metal particles is gripped by the plug? The plug may pick up a wrench but the amount of ferrous metal particles it can attract and hold on to is much smaller than you would think based on the size of the wrench it can attract and hold on to. Sincerely, Macster.

Pull the sump plate and see if there are any big pieces in there that can tell you what failed.
