Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

42 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

I'm thinking of buying a 996 currently located in Houston. What would you guys suggest for getting it from Texas to New Jersey, driving or shipping? For those of you that vote for shipping which company would you use?

POST 2Original post

Drive it! That's a great way to get used to your new car! I drove mine 2,200 miles from California to northern Indiana when I bought it. It was a great drive. If you do decide to ship it, I would recommend that you avoid Dependable Auto Shippers. I had a bad experience with them in the past - they really aren't set up to ship high-end cars.

POST 3Original post

DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a blast that would be and how better to get a feel of the car!! Pete

POST 5Original post

I drove from NY to Dallas straight in 28 hrs during college spring break. I was on my way to Moab, UT for some biking fun. Easy two day trip.

POST 13Original post

I bought mine in Houston and drove it back to SC....17 hour trip not counting a stop to see my son in Georgia. I am SOOOOOOOOO glad I did. I learned a lot about the car and gained a level of comfort and confidence I would not have gained driving it 15 minutes at a time

POST 15Original post

Drive it. I did 35 hours cross country and loved it. You'll get to know your car and will have a great story to tell.

I bought my car in Houston, and drove it back to Chicago. An easy 2 day trip. There is no better way to get familiar with your car!! And have fun while doing it. Be sure to take along your radar detector, or make generous use of your cruise control. These cars seem to accelerate on their own, and will easily exceed the speed limit within a few seconds of starting down the road. While you are cruising along, foot on the accelerator - yes, that's just what you will start to do - unknowingly = accelerate. Have a safe trip back, and don't worry about the guys that insist that you take pictures of the car on your jaunt back east. Wait till you get home. If we don't see pictures posted within 24 hours of arrival in NJ, we will send the RL Goon squad out to repossess the car till you understand the responsibilities of ownership and membership. Welcome to the insanity. larry

I bought mine in Illinois and drove it to Dallas. It was a great trip!

POST 25Original post

Absolutely drive it! (and take a ton of photos...and share)

POST 26Original post

If the car has been sitting for a while maybe get the oil plus filter and air filter changed before hitting the road. It;s god to drive the car. Helps keep the seals good and exhaust cleaned out Remember don't go over 5k rpms before the engine gets to normal operating temp around 180. I don't advise traveling through sand storm like AZ is having right now unless you plane to do a full repaint.

Now that is funny.

POST 29Original post

I just bought one out of Chicago. Flying out to pick it up next Friday and drive it back to central PA. Figure its a great way to get familiar with the car, and quite possibly the last time I will be able to drive it a long distance without one of my 3 kids as a passenger. My vote: Drive it.

POST 30Original post

Good idea on the oil change. Regarding warming up the engine, I had always heard that it was "keep it under 4,000 RPM till the engine reaches temperature." The reason for this is that there are many different kinds of metal in the engine. As a result, they expand at different rates. Their proper tolerances are met with the engine reaches temp. Don't idle till it gets to temperature, because it takes too long. You want to drive it to warm it, just don't push it too hard till warm. That includes rapid acceleration. Just take your time. It will only take a few miles to warm it up fully. larry

Ha Ha ....You got Me! I must agree!

POST 38Original post

If you chose to ship, try to find a shipper that will bring the car directly from Houston to you...will not be off-loading the car at a depot or terminal enroute. Scratches, etc., usually happen at the depots during unload/load operations. relinuca

POST 39Original post

I trust by now you have decided to drive your new car home. At the least, after the drive you will have an idea of the first mods you want to pursue.

POST 40Original post

my son and i flew out to Austin Texas last july to drive back a 911. and this past may i had one delivered from california. I can say the drive was nice but long as heck. Soooo glad i had the next one shipped..no miles put on it, no stone chips from road etc.....trailered to my door and the transport operator let me drive it off the transport....best decision for me. As a bonus the transport operator loaded my car when picked up it would not have to be jockey'd on and off during his route to my house, drove on transport once and driven off once. Oh and i live in Clarksville Tn.

Well....pulled the trigger last week and bought the Orient Red 996 in Houston. Flew out and drove it back to NJ. The trip was a blast! 26 hr. drive, did it in 2 days and with a big grin on my face the whole time!. I loved my 928 but this car is awesome! Many thanks to Malakas and his gracious family for being such wonderful hosts. Many thanks to all of you for the great "Drive it" advice.
