Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use diy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend heyer performance in mountain view' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. If you are in Woodside - I,d recommend Heyer Performance in Mountain View for PPI - he really knows these cars ....

I mean, I can go in once and replace the IMS with the LN retrofit..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Been looking online for a fun car and I really like the 911. I've driven a friends boxster - 986.. MY '00 I think (he drove my 335i vert) - but never driven a carrera before. More of a DIY guy (still learning) and don't mind working on the car myself. I have a bentley manual for my C6 A6 and it is great - tells me everything on the repair. To my knowledge there is no Bentley manual for the 996 - Is there something similar available (besides asking the folks on this forum for info)?
Checked out some of the cars... the 00-01 cars are right at my target price - but I am reading about RMS and IMS issues. Are these issues resolved in the 02-04 model? If so, it might just be wise for me to wait a year and target those cars then. Any other issues on those cars (Mk2)?
Also, there seems to be a lot of the Porsche forums.. I've come across planet-9.. flat6... and a few other. Does anyone have a list of the most popular ones?
Thanks everyone and I hope to be part of this forum (i.e officially with a car) soon!!
Here is the car you need.. IMS and RMS addressed, tons of recent mechanical and cosmetic enhancements.
Its ready to go, literally.

Jake, I cannot access the link you gave out... I get an access denied or something.
Chaos - Do you have a link to your car for sale ad? Nor cal here.. where are u at? (where's c-bus?).
Another quick question - are the IMS and RMS recurring issues? I mean, I can go in once and replace the IMS with the LN retrofit.. and the RMS with the OEM replacement (improved) part... but will that problem resurface (and known to resurface) again later?
There is lots of DIY info on the forums and good videos .. so some jobs are easy/possible - but the 911's have very limited access around the engine - so not like working on most other cars - if you have access to a lift things get easier - but jobs like clutch and RMS need engine out - which gets expensive if you have to go to the shop. The '99 - '01 models had 3.4 l engine which had some additional issues beyond IMS - so better to get '02 or newer with 3.6l if your budget allows.
If you can find car with good service history and IMS done - even better. It seems like cars that are stored for long periods of time and not used much are more susceptible to the problem - so lower mileage is not always better in this case.
An average mileage '01 with service history at the right price could be OK - but get Pre-Purchase Inspection done by Porsche specialist - drive it hard - and chances are you will be very happy - but this is not a Toyota or even an easy to fix Ford truck - so things can go wrong and can get expensive in the worst case ...just budget for that and you will sleep better ....
If you are in Woodside - I,d recommend Heyer Performance in Mountain View for PPI - he really knows these cars ....
this is what I use for DIY:

scroll down to the 996, download and save to file since the files are rather large for quick reference.
Thanks Targa.. do '02 and newer models also have IMS issues?
I just got to know about Heyer a few days ago (CL ad) - he's got good reviews! I plan to use him for the PPI.
Yes, even up through ;08 there are potential IMS issues...and of course you read about them on these forums - - actual percentage of cars that suffer this is a good question - there is a lot of speculation on the boards about that - for '02 and beyond consensus seems to be <10% .... maybe much less.
I have had friends with Audi 1.8T engines with blown turbos well before 100k - so even on those cars - engine replacement can be expensive relative to overall value of car. If you drive the P car regularly and change the oil at 5 - 10K intervals - you increase your chances of not having the big issues.
When it comes time to do my clutch - I will probably do IMS, RMS, AOS as preventative maintenance while the engine is out anyway - extra cost at that point is probably around $1.5K ... which should give me piece of mind for another 60K+ miles or so after that...
With good maintenance - these cars should be able to run out to 150K+ before a major engine rebuild - at which point you'd need to question if the car is worth it ....
But compare that to an oil change in a Ferrari ...
